:salam:
I pray you are all well and in the best of health and iman. Our baby daughter arrived last Saturday alhamdulillah. She is our fourth child mashaallah. We are having problems finding a suitable name for her. Our other children are called A'ishah, Sufyaan and Aaminah. We have shortlisted Saffiyah, Hannah, Khadijah and Amarah.
I quite like Hannah but no one can tell me if it is pronounced with a fatha at the beginning - so is it 'hannah' as in the English name or Hannah said like 'honey' ie the 'ha' part.
Does anyone know?

Hannah is indeed pronounced with a fatha in the beginning. Phonetically it will sound like "Hun-nah". Note it's pronounced with a ح and there is a taa taneeth in the end. This was also the name of Mariam (AS)'s mother, ie the wife of 'Imran.
The arabic would be حَنَّة

jk. Am I right in presuming there are different versions of Hannah? See here (http://www.muslimbabynames.net/Girlnames.asp?Alphabet=H&StartingRecord=21): (last two names)

Yes, the biggest difference, apart from the meaning, would be the way they start with two different letters. For the sake of ease (so people don't mispronounce the name) I'd go with ھنَاًء. It would be pronounced Ha-naa, with an emphasis in elongating the 'ah' sound in the end.
The last two names in the link are obviously different to the one I mentioned in my previous post.

Yep, you'd give a jerk, but for convenience you could just stress on it a bit rather than like how you would when reading Qur'an. and yep, the beginning has a fatha.
And no problem :D Checking out names and meanings has been a bit of a hobby to me.

Well we still couldn't decide so gave all name suggestions to our ustadh. He has a method of finding suitable names by looking at the parents names. I'm not sure how this works but he has given us 2 names, Halima and Maariyah.
We like Maariyah. We didn't get a chance to find out how it is written in arabic. Can u help ia? Jk. Ws

Jk sis for your as always swift response. I was tempted to spell the name like this: Mariah but can see how it could be mis-pronounced. My husband is still keen on Hana. Ia we will have to see.

No problem, sis :D
There's always the choice of keeping both names of course. It's pretty common in most cultures.

sorry once again :)
Just wanted to clarify something re: Maariyah. Do you pronounce it the same as the english 'Maria' but elongating the 'ma'. We have a Maariyah in the family but her name is pronounced without stressing on the 'ri' which should be as it's ra joined with ya....

: ) no need to be sorry : )
Hm, well the english way phonetically is like "Muh-ree-ya'. While in Arabic, like you mentioned, the Maa will be elongated, while the 'ri' should no be elongated, as the 'ya' has it's own vowel, the fatha. Unless the 'ya' has a tashdeed on it, then the name would be pronounced 'Maariy-yah', stressing on the yaa. Once you get used to the double 'ya' it gets pretty easy to pronounce. For example, my best friend's daughter's name is 'Mardhiyyah'
I'd still (of course) recommend without the tashdeed, just to make it easier for others.

We have our name registration app. Is it ok to double barrel Hana-Maariyah or shld maariyah be a middle name? Is it ok to say both names together. Also in the two versions of hana is the one that is difficult to pronounce because of the ha? Otherwise is it the same as the other hana with the hamza at the end? Sorry again! Ws

Hm, I am not sure about that. I personally would keep it as a middle name so that someone does not think both names are actually one.. though I don't see a problem with calling the child with both names.. one of my nephew's has a middle name which I really like, so I like to call him by both names : )
Well there is the first one I mentioned, with both the ح and the tashdeed which might make it hard. I would personally choose the name with the hamza at the end as it will not be prone to being mispronounced and hence changing the meaning.
