Assalamu Alaikum.
Since Muslims of many countries are members in this forum, Iam just curious to know how muslims of different countries break the fast. What are your usual iftar meals?

I live in Canada, and eat with my grandparents.

Eating to the extent that you become fat is NOT ALLOWED!

Yes eat and then spend double the time in Ibaadats.

You must have heard: Nafs kay gadhay ko khoob khilao khoob khilaao.. aur phir us se kaam bhi khoob lo..

Feed the Donkey of Nafs alot, and then make it work alot.

But now, its only... Feed it Alot and make it rest alot! And we can see the state of the ummah.

It's not specific to any group of people. EVERYONE is indulged in over eating! It needs to be reduced!

:jazak:

P.S: WE ARE NOT OVER EATERS EITHER!

Sayyida Ayesha (ra) said that the first bida'h in Islam was to eat to one's full.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: O Allah, make for the family of Muhammad the provision which is a bare subsistence.

Normally after fasting, isn't it hard for most people to eat so much food? I've seen some of the menus on this thread.. is this like at one iftaar or throughout ramadhaan?

:ws:

I'd probably depend on the person and what they're doing I guess. If I don't eat a certain amount for suhoor and iftaar I get headaches and weakness, and that would effect my tarawih.

I think it was Maulana Zakariyya :rahma: who mentioned in his chapter on ramadhan something about not everyone should eat minimal food because of what they're doing. Students in Madaaris for example. They're doing mutaala'ah throughout the day and night so they would need energy normally.

I guess I'm different from everyone else on here as I stay away from all the fried savories and its rarely made in my house. Iftaar is done with dates and water then supper ( one meal) and thats it. That one meal is rarely and "indian menu" Maybe occasionally I'll bake some pastries .

after maghrib was dinner with some delicious Harees .. followed by Mandi laham..
one of the best mandi ive had in recent times.. the goats were specially reared in his farm.. it was like 1 small goat for three to begin with.. the yemenis are always great at making mandi..

it seems therez a restaurant in Riyadh called ' Cabrito' which specialises in cooking the famous Nayeemi variety of goat.. and they claim to grill as many as 50 at a time..

ive tried the Nayeemi mutton.. and really its worth every penny..

Although for the most part of Ramadhan I have been on a vegan diet in recent days I have binge eating due to invites to other peoples houses so this has been the usual asian food i.e. samosa, pakora, sana, kebabs ,etc. But then again most have been grilled and not fried food

Well, thank Allah for that! I think I'll save that quote to teach my kids the importance of punctuation and to demonstrate a typical example of a sentence where an omitted comma makes all the difference. It reminds me of the fate of a young warrior mentioned in the fables of Ancient Greece, who on the eve of departure for war, consulted the court soothsayer and was told without pause at the appropriate points, 'Thou shalt go thou shalt return never by war shalt thou perish!'

Mentally placing the commas after 'go' and 'return', the zealous warrior lept away on his chariot, brimming with confidence only to be killed in war. Had the two commas been placed at the correct point after 'go' and 'never', he may well have saved his life.

I m of the personal opinion that its nice to have a 'halal hobby' that one can spend ones free time in. We are weak people, also in todays age of 'fast life' of T.V. and internet and facebook, almost all of us suffer from a minor 'Attention Deficit Disorder'. We are in an age that we need to be engaged in something or other. The best thing is Dikhr of Allah, ofcourse. But we are weak and often engage in haram stuff like music etc. So i personally think everyone should find a 'halal hobby'. As long as one is NOT obsessed with it, I think it will help us to an extent to avoid fitnah :insh:. :-)

P.s. I noticed this when in college. During exams 'some' of the students are engrossed in studying that they automatically 'lower their gaze', because they don't have time to think about it.

Edit: The problem is i haven't found a good 'halal hobby' yet. For the time being it is Sunniforum :)

Umar (ra) once cooked for a poor family when he was the Khalifa.
Cooking for ones own family can be considered sadaqa i guess, Since its mentioned in the hadith even putting a morsel of food on ones wife's mouth is sadaqa.

Btw, with a large family and constant stream of visitors, I do alot of cooking. Besides a couple of occasions when I've looked up a new recipe on YouTube, I don't think I've ever felt the need to spend time on YouTube and have never watched a cookery programme on TV.

True our wills are weak indeed. But you can't make Halaal into Haraam. Nothing wrong with cooking food daily.

One should not fast continously, Rasoolullah :saw: forbade it:

Bukhari. Volume 3, Book 31, Number 145:
Narrated 'Abdullah(ra):
The Prophet:saw: fasted for days continuously; the people also did the same but it was difficult for them. So, the Prophet:saw: forbade them (to fast continuously for more than one day). They slid, "But you fast without break (no food was taken in the evening or in the morning)." The Prophet:saw: replied, "I am not like you, for I am provided with food and drink (by Allah)."

Also our body has a right on us, we have to fulfill it:

Riyadus Saliheen:149.
Abu Juhayfa Wahb ibn 'Abdullah said, "The Prophet:saw: joined Salman and Abu'd-Darda' together in brotherhood. Salman visited Abu'd-Darda' and saw Umm ad-Darda' poorly dressed and said to her, 'What's the matter with you?' She said, 'Your brother Abu'd-Darda' has no need of this world.' Abu'd-Darda' came and made some food for him. Salman said, 'Eat.' He said, 'I am fasting.' Salman said, 'I will not eat unless you eat.'" He said, "He ate. In the night, Abu'd-Darda' went to stand in prayer and Salman said to him, 'Sleep!' and he slept. Then he got up again and Salman said, 'Sleep!' At the end of the night, Salman said, 'Now get up and we will pray.' Salman said to him, 'Your Lord has rights over you and your self has rights over you, so give those with rights their due.' Abu'd-Darda' came to the Prophet:saw: and mentioned this to him and the Prophet:saw: said, 'Salman spoke the truth.'" [al-Bukhari]
I just mentioned the hadith not to justify our 'weak' actions, but rather to establish the fact that it is the Sunnah to give the body its right ie not to starve oneself purposely even when food is available. But the truth is most of us eat food to our necks, 'most' of us satisfy our stomachs more than what it needs.

Khair, the ahadith above again are used to support something which is not even proven by these ahadith.

Well my personal understanding is the husband is usually out working most of the day, so naturally the wife will have to do 'most' of the household works including cooking. I believe in division of labour inside the family. But the need arrives we should be ready to step inside each others shoes, so that the balance is maintained. I m not married yet, so all these are just ideal concepts, based on observation and intuition.

My point is that the way we muslims overdo the "FOOD" part, it needs to be corrected.

I'm not looking down on anyone even though it might sound as it.

But it's the same way that when someone develops Takabbur because he's reading Tahajjud regularly, SHaihk's tell him to stop reading Tahajjud altogether.

We're so indulged in EATING that all our ibadats revolve around Food. For example, you see people on Umrah/Hajj here (including myself), all I worry about while doing Umrah is to eat KFC after finishing.

There is haq of your body on you. That haq again has been proved by another hadith. Please find it for me. It says that To keep the back straight, only a morsel is enough for the son of Adam!

Yes Hazrat, its true, we do overeat unfortunately.

I think the hadith you are searching is this:

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” [Tirmidhi 1381 Ibn Maajah 3349 classed as Sahih]

Edit:
Maybe the problem is because we don't say 'bismillahir-rehmanir-raheem' before eating.

`Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was eating with his six Companions when a desert Arab came and ate up the food in two mouthfuls. Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Had he mentioned the Name of Allah, it would have sufficed for all of you.''
[At-Tirmidhi].

yes :jazak:

This is the hadith!

Now tell me, is there any reason to use Ahadith to support over-eating or OVER spending of time in cooking dishes?

Like you go into the kitchen in the morning and come out at night?

Or

Spending Hours in front of TV or YOUTUBE learning how to make new dishes!

I've seen women who spend whole days on youtube learning how to make new dishes.

AND

The youtube teachers are non mehrams males.

:salam: hazrat

over-eating is a definate no no. spending time in cooking is another matter. a woman(or man) could spend time in preparing dishes with the right intention and also,if whilst preparing the dishes they spent their time in zikr, reciting Quran, salawat etc, then its all good, imo.

Well Hazrat, i never used the Hadith to support over eating, I was just saying one shouldn't starve oneself for days when food is available. Ofcourse one can fast, but one has to break fast everyday. I only said no starving for days. :-) I shall quote my earlier post:

I just mentioned the hadith not to justify our 'weak' actions, but rather to establish the fact that it is the Sunnah to give the body its right ie not to starve oneself purposely even when food is available. But the truth is most of us eat food to our necks, 'most' of us satisfy our stomachs more than what it needs.

I hope you concur.

And my post about about 'halal hobbies':

I m of the personal opinion that its nice to have a 'halal hobby' that one can spend ones free time in. We are weak people, also in todays age of 'fast life' of T.V. and internet and facebook, almost all of us suffer from a minor 'Attention Deficit Disorder'. We are in an age that we need to be engaged in something or other. The best thing is Dikhr of Allah, ofcourse. But we are weak and often engage in haram stuff like music etc. So i personally think everyone should find a 'halal hobby'. As long as one is NOT obsessed with it, I think it will help us to an extent to avoid fitnah

I guess you must have not read it completely. lol.

Now for the topic of Over-eating. I completely agree with you on it. Most of us are obsessed with food, We have a lot of people in in 'Developed' countries dying of Obesity every year..! It is indeed a sign of our obsession with Dunya.

O Allah protect us from such habits. Ameen.

Water fasting is a great idea (without peer sahib). I'm starting it soon insha'Allah. Wana be my water fasting partner :$

I think it will come with training our nafs and most of us need it. We should not eat to full but stop eating when we still have urge. In this way inshaaAllah we can control

what does water fasting mean?

Bismillah
You just drink water for days which can vary like some will do for a day or a week, some for 2 weeks or more when the body will be cleansed of toxins and the nafs too will come down. But better to do after consulting some expert in that field. Allahu alam

Just to add, in case of confusion, water fasting is not an established act of worship or proven from sunnah. The members suggesting it are doing so as a form of disciplining the self, detoxify the body and controling the urge to overeat.

Salam.
Date and water first. Some kind of chilled juice before Maghrib salat.

Finish maghrib and eat what would be usually my dinner.
Next meal is usually Suhoor.
