As salaamu alaikum brothers and sisters

I am working on this assignment and needed ur help, so all those with some knowledge in politics and history pls help a sister in need.

1) In World War two which allies supported each other and waged war against Germany because their ally nation had been attacked?
2) Which wars have been fought because a nation claimed to be helping the oppressed people of another nation?
3) Different ideologies compete to survive such as communism, liberalism and so on. Each ideology is threatened by the other, hence a lot of wars are fought to protect ones ideology. Now this is a general fact, but when i did research i couldn't find any reading on it. so question a) can anyone suggest any reading? b) Which wars have been fought to protect ones ideology or eliminate another ideology? I would need some sort of reference for this.

Would really appreciate your help. Jazakumullahu taa'la ahsanal jaza in advance!

2) Which wars have been fought because a nation claimed to be helping the oppressed people of another nation?

In the modern era (and fairly recently), NATO's (primarily the USA, UK plus a few other countries like Turkey) intervention in 1995 on the side of the Republic of Bosnia-Hercegovina (basically the Bosnian Muslims), in the form of airstrikes against the Republika Srpska (the Bosnian Serb entity) was fought under the principle of helping to prevent the genocide of the Bosnian Muslim community. Also, armed NATO intervention against former Yugoslavia on behalf of the Kosovo Albanians in 1999 was also fought under the same principle (preventing genocide of the Kosovo Albanians).

Of course the rationale for NATO intervention in the Balkans is disputed by many, in particular by Serb and Pan-Slavic nationalists aswell as leftist intellectuals in the Western world. To summarise (very roughly), they argue that these were basically aggressive attempts by NATO to establish hegemony and influence in South East Europe (also known as the Balkans)

Also and even more recently, Russian intervention in 2008 on behalf of South Ossetia (a breakaway region of Georgia) against the Georgian government's attempt to forcefully reincorporate the region back under the control of Tbilisi (the Georgian capital). The Russian government claimed to be preventing the oppression/potential genocide of the Oseetian people, many of whom hold Russian Federation citizenship. In this case, NATO (rather hypocritically in my personal opinion) considered this to be naked aggression on Russia's part, an attempt to re-establish Russian influence and control over the former Soviet states.

A good example of this is the Cold War (1945-1991) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War) between the capitalist/liberal democratic Western Bloc, led by the US and its NATO allies, against the Communist Soviet Bloc, led by the USSR and its Warsaw Pact allies. Whilst the USSR and the USA didn't go to war directly against each other, they fought proxy conflicts by backing different local factions against each other throughout the Third World. The most famous examples of these proxy wars were: the Korean War of 1950-53, the Vietnam War of 1959-75, the Arab-Israeli wars of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s where, generally speaking, the USA backed the Israelis and the Soviets backed the Arabs, plus the Soviet war in Afghanistan from 1979-1989. Although there were also many other proxy wars in places such as Angola, Mozambique and Ethiopia/Somalia.

Finally, going back into history, the wars fought by Revolutionary & Republican France against the monarchies of Europe in the early-mid 1790s, such as Britain, France and Austria-Hungary, are also an example of war fought on the basis of ideology, namely liberal/bourgeois republicanism versus feudal monarchism.

As for good reading recommendations, I'll need to consult my old university work which is lying about somewhere at home (I've kept all my essays and reading lists).

Salam-wa-Rahmatullah,

Apologies for my delay in replying back to you.

Ok for the Cold War try this:

Cold War: For Forty-five Years the World Held Its Breath (Paperback)
by Jeremy Isaacs (Author), Taylor Downing (Author) (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cold-War-Forty-five-Years-Breath/dp/0349120803/ref=pd_cp_b_1/276-2991214-8698136)

For the French Revolutionary Wars, here's a link to some pretty ok over-view articles:

http://www.answers.com/topic/french-revolutionary-wars

The book that I would most recommend on the French Revolutionary Wars is:

The Bayonets Of The Republic: Motivation And Tactics In The Army Of Revolutionary France, 1791-94 (History and Warfare) (Paperback)
by John A Lynn (http://www.amazon.com/Bayonets-Republic-Motivation-Tactics-Revolutionary/dp/book-citations/0813329450)

Hope this is what you're looking for. Let me know if you need anything else. InshAllah I'll be quicker in my response.

:salam:

Also do not forget the connection between Poland and France during WWII, as for Poland being attacked by Germany ("Blitzkrieg") was the reason for France to declare war against Germany.

You should define what you mean by the term "ideology", because conquering foreign countries for ressources (oil, "Lebensraum", gold, etc..) is also an ideology.

I would basically say that all conflicts are driven by ideologies, especially by opposing ones.

Just on a side note:

If a "world war" is defined by the number of participating countries, then we must classify the ongoing crusade in Afghanistan as world war III because world war II had 24 participant countries while the current crusade in Afghanistan has 42 participant nations.
