In a discourse Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi rehmatullahi alayh said:

“Who so ever enters this path (Tasawwuf) and has not attained humility then he is absolutely devoid (of that which is acquired in this path). It is like marrying a woman of worldly honor, and wealth, but she is barren (unable to bear children) because the aim of the marriage was lost. She will lose face in the sight of the husband (despite her worldly wealth and respect). Similarly, to tread this path without perfecting humility in oneself is useless. does this also apply to the various shaikhs or is it only for the mureeds?

i ask this because many shaikhs i have met have no evident humilty at all. surely they should be the standard bearers and serve as an example?

What Maulana Thanvi r.a has mentioned is true for one and all in this path. Have you ever seen a bird that feeds its young without bending down? or a water jug or leather bag quenching someone's thirst without tilting. Then how can it be that someone benefit another without humbling and lowering oneself.

Yes, the natures differ. Some are by nature dry, which may seem haughty to others, while some are mellowed down, whose tawadu' reflects. A murabbi has to have humility, but in favor of the mureed's tarbiyyah he can force himself to put this tawadu' aside to discipline the mureed. Just as a father would put aside his immense love for the child to discipline him.
