AA.

Nafs has various parts to it and is split into different types and stages of being.

For example Nafs amara, lawama, mutmainna etc depending on how well you progressing in combatting your ego.

Then their is the nafs related to to the sexual desires and anger as stated by Imam Ghazali in his Ihya.

Thus the nafs has two parts as stated above.

:salam: "Kitab ar ruh" of ibn qayyim(rh) handles with this matter. But the book has just confused me, dont know was it the cause of difficult translation and editing of the book or not. I may look at it again, if i understand clearly, i may quote some part from the book inshallah.

The Nafs has 2 meanings Islamically:

1)the soul or ruh
2)The nafs that requires conquering i.e pride/ego/carnal desires/anger

Mufti Shah Sadruddin Sahib done an excellent talk on the topic of the nature of the ruh, Shaytan and the nafs. From what I can remember, Mufti Sahib said that the ruh is Angelic and is made from nur and the nafs is made from fire like Satan. However, though it is made from fire, it can be either Angelic or Satanic depending upon the actions of the individual. When a person performs Dhikr and worship, his soul is strengthened and his nafs becomes more Angelic. Thus, the person becomes Angelic too and therefore, is able to eat, sleep, etc less and becomes more monk like. When a person persues the dunya, his nafs becomes more Satanic and thus, he becomes more dunya orientated. Also, shaytan works with the nafs in decieving man.

the better answers are, for me,by Al Ghazali here:

http://books.google.fr/books?id=63FX5DrK9jQC&printsec=frontcover&dq=GHAZALI+HEART#v=onepage&q=&f=false

You can have a rough copy here in pdf format :
http://www.ghazali.org/site/ihya.htm

Third Quarter: The ways to Perdition (Rubʾ al-muhlikat)

21. Book XXI: The Marvels of the Heart.

http://www.ghazali.org/books/skillie.pdf

you HAVE TO read this:the clearest explication masha Allah.

Also I think this audios courses are good masha Allah:
http://www.travelingthepath.org/2009/07/the-heart-nafs-and-mind-a-complete-system/

But as stated by Mufti Shafi Usmani in his Tafsir the views differ among ahl al sunna on this matter.I decided to stick with Ghazali's view because, for me,they make more sense. But know that there is not ONE answer by our oulamas so don't try to make all the views work together.

finnish the entire serie:5 lectures

PS for Al Ghazali Ruh and Nafs are the same thing just like 'aql and qalb. But you have to read him in his own words.

Brother, and on a digressive note, shukran for that post. I am reading Ihya Uloomud Deen but I don't have the second volume yet.
The above cited url's should promptly remedy that.

Nafs & Ruh both are different creatures. Nafs is a partner of your body take care, controller and make you selfish by your Jin partner and Ruh are making the direct link to Allah. Both are fighters of true and lie in your body as battle field and must be at the end one winner.

thanks that is a different view of this issue, also acceptable.Unfortunately for my part i have only seen it discussed in detail in Maariful Quran by Mufti Shafi Usmani but I had to say that for beginners it's better to stick with the Al Ghazali's view(wich also explained in Maariful Quran).I think easier to derive from it concrete application regarding tazkyat.

Salaam alaikum

This matter of what are the Nafs and Ruh and how do they compare and contrast requires explanation. Sadly, over the centuries, ulama have confused this matter by adopting misleadng conceptualizations.

What's most important is to avoid speculation regarding such a critical matter. Many scholars have speculated without sound evidence, leading to all kinds of views.

The believer of this time should seek for decisiveness in meaning and narration.

Regarding the Ruh, it is the source of life from Allah. The angels place it into the fetus giving us life, and remove it permanently at the time of death.

What is evidence is there that the Ruh and the nafs are the same?
What evidence is there that the Ruh can be improved, purified, degraded, blackened, or otherwise affected by the actions of man?
