I heard this story...i want to know if its true...please verify
reportedly
"A jew came to Aisha (RA) and asked her about the character of the prophet (SAW)...she said go to ali (RA) because he knows his character better then me...he went to ali and asked him....he replied "describe the dunya to me".....he said "where should i start? the dunya is so big and so much".....ali said the quran says "Qul Mataa ud dunya Qaleel" (Say that the items of the dunya are few) while the quran says "wa innaka la ala khuluqin azheem"(You are of great character)....How can I describe that which the quran calls great when you cant describe that which it calls less?"
How true is this? from where is this?

I couldn't find it in hadith books; it is mentioned in Tafsir Razi (vol.32 Pg.21), with slight difference:
The Jew came to Umar :anhu: during his khilafah, who sent him to Bilal :anhu:, who sent him to Fatimah :anha:, who sent him to Ali :anhu:, who then answered him.

Amin to your duas
If you can read and type Arabic, then you could use Maktabah ash-Shamilah, which could be downloaded from here:
http://islamport.com/6688.htm
It allows one to search through thousands of books.

Mufti sahib, how do we receive narrations (such as this one) that are mentioned in Tafasir but not in the books of Hadith? Will such narrations be quotable? Where does the author of the Tafsir get these narrations from?

They cannot be quoted until one has a chain for them whose authenticity has been verified. These narrations could be from anywhere, esp. as tafsir works are full of very weak and fabricated narrations.
