Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and the Wali Allah Tradition (http://deoband.org/2009/10/history/biographies-of-scholars/mawlana-rashid-ahmad-gangohi-and-the-wali-allah-tradition/)

By Mawlana 'Ubayd Allah Sindhi

Shaykh al-Islam Abu Mas'ud Rashid Ahmad Gangohi is the son of Hidayat Allah Ansari. He was born in 1244 AH, and learnt from Mawlana Mamluk 'Ali [Nanautwi], Mawlana 'Abd al-Ghani [Dehlawi], Mawlana Ahmad Sa'id [Dehlawi], and Mawlana Imdad Allah [Muhajir Makki] etc. I personally studied a large portion of Sunan Abi Dawud from him. Allah granted me immense benefit through it. It is the effect of Mawlana Rashid Ahmad's company that I followed his maslak in such a way that I never even contemplated moving away from it. Through him, the Wali Allahi approach to fiqh and hadith became manifest to me, and through his blessings I became well versed in the fundamentals as well as advanced rational discourse in the sciences of fiqh, suluk & ma'rifah, Arabic and the Qur'an & Sunnah. I found Mawlana Rashid Ahmad to be a well-versed imam and mujtahid of the Hanafi School. He conformed strictly to the school of thought of his teacher, Mawlana 'Abd al-Ghani, and was as unshakeable as a mountain in this regard. He closely resembled Mawlana Muhammad Ishaq [Dehlawi] in the Wali Allahi maslak. I understood the reality of sunnah and bid'ah from his book, Barahin-e-Qati'ah.

A limited number of copies were available from Azhar Academy in London, however, they sold out very quickly. Unfortunately, I am not aware of other stores who stock it in the West.

:salam:

It is published by Sindh Sagar Academy in Lahore.

I have a Dar al-Kitab (Lahore) catalogue which contains this book alongwith other works by or concerning Mawlana 'Ubayd Allah :rahim:. It also contains a number of books by Mawlana Sufi 'Abd al-Hamid Sewati :rahim:

Mawlana Sufi 'Abd a-Hamid Sewati :rahim:, I believe, was a prominent and leading exponent of Shah Wali Allah's 'ulum from amongst the Deobandi 'ulama.

It may be worth reading Mufti Muhammad Taqi saheb's (hafizahullah) review of the book mentioned by Saad bhai. It is included in his Tabseray.

I do not know much about Mawlana 'Ubayd Allah Sindhi :rahim:. I know that he was a leading student of Shaykh al-Hind :rahim:, an authority on Shah Wali Allah's :rahim: 'ulum and thought, and that he held some individual opinions. I recall Mawlana Manazir Ahsan Gilani :rahim: writing in his memoir that the teachers of Dar al-'Ulum Deoband (maybe 'Allamah Shabbir Ahmad 'Uthmani) debated him in Dar al-'Ulum on a particular issue in which he differed with the jamhur.

i heard mufti manzoor mengal of jamia farooqiyah (karachi) saying that Hadhrat allamah maulana Yusuf al-binnori strongly dissented with maulana Obaidullah but he did not elloborate the issues.. khayr.. may Allah forgive him for any of his weaknesses. Ameen

Assalam o alaykum,

Mawlana Sindhi's family used to be Hindu until his grandfather accepted Sikhism. Mawlana Sindhi became attracted to Islam after reading Tohfat al-Hind (by an ex Hindu) and Taqwiyat al-Iman (http://www.4shared.com/file/26577367/c54d4954/Taqwiat_ul-Iman_Tarjuma_Hawash.html) of Shah Ismail Shahid. He was bayat to Khawaja Muhammad Siddiq Bharchondwi (http://www.4shared.com/file/65261920/827ece96/Mawlana_Hafidh_Muhammad_Siddiq.html), grand-shaykh of Mawlana Ahmad Ali Lahori...Then he went to Deoband and studied under Shaykh al-Hind.

Later on when Mawlana Sindhi would give dars his mother, still a Sikh would swear at him and beat him with shoes in front of 'ulama and students for accepting Islam but he never complained.

Please do...

I have always been a great fan of Shaykhul-Hind (RA) & Shaykh (Maulana) Ubaidullah Sindhi and yes the later departed from some of the agreed upon opinions within the Hanafi Madhab and opted to follow Authentic Hadeeth.
