Is it prohibited for women to perform Hajj without a mahram?

From hadeeths I know that it is stricly prohibited for a woman to travel alone to a certain distance.

Can a woman attend hajj without being accompanied with a mahram?

I would like to know the procedures to going,attending, and returning from hajj.
