Last I checked the Starbursts sold in the United States contain gelatin. As a general rule I think it is good to avoid any "chewy" candy.

Alot of companies do not put on suitable for vegetarians on their products.
Interesting point you raise. I have found sometimes that there is cochniel or 1 ingredient that weve never heard off that is the difference between halal and haram.
I bought some bread a while back, the thick bread didnt have a sign on and the medium sliced did, i wondered and wondered looking at the ingredients what the difference was and in the end it was an ingredient that iv never heard of which 'might' have been the difference between halal and haram. Or it could have been that they didnt bother to put a suitable for veg logo on.
I have a mate who is clued up on most things but has become obsessed with the suitable for veg logo, so much so that he picked up a tuna bake meal in tesco and started checking why it didnt have the logo on. I told him its cuz its got fish in it and fish isnt vegetarian but he didnt seem convinced and i had to force him to buy it. Not sure if he ate it or not.

I recently contacted several companies regarding chocolates suitable for vegetarians. I received the following reply from consumer.affairs@wrigley.co.uk
on 04 January 2010. Please note whilst Starburst is suitable for vegetarians it is not suitable for a halaal diet according to Wrigley.

Our Altoid Mints do contain very small quantities of gelatine which is derived from pork. Gelatine does not impart any flavour to the mints but it's a necessary ingredient for the texture. When we use gelatine it is thoroughly purified and dried during its manufacturing process. As a company we are continually looking at alternatives to animal gelatine, but at the moment we've not been able to find a substitute that produces the same quality our consumers have come to enjoy with Altoid Mints.
We can confirm that no alcohol, in the everyday sense of the word (ethyl alcohol), is added to any of our products during the manufacturing process. The sugar alcohols (polyols) found in some Wrigley products and the “normal alcohol” (ethyl alcohol) found in liquor are two unrelated compounds and should not be confused with each other. Although they share the same chemical name “alcohol” their characteristics are very different. Therefore, people who need to watch their ethyl alcohol intake need not be concerned about consuming any Wrigley product.
At present we would advise that the following products ARE SUITABLE for a Halal Diet:
Wrigley's Spearmint, Doublemint, Juicy Fruit
Orbit Complete: Spearmint, Peppermint, Strong Mint, Strawberry, Lemon & Lime
Extra: Spearmint, Peppermint, Cool Breeze, Ice
Extra Fusion: Liquid Burst Strawberry Peach

Note: I had actually asked them about all Starburst varieties. However they responded with regards to Starburst Choozers.
Please note I have learned my lesson and I am not 'declaring' them halal or otherwise. Just simply passing the information on.

Dear XXXXXXX,
Thank you for your further email concerning the suitability of our products for a Halal Diet.
The Wrigley Company is committed to producing products of the highest quality that are safe and enjoyable for our consumers. For clarity we would advise that our response confirms that no alcohol, in the everyday sense of the word (ethyl alcohol), is “added” to any of our products during the manufacturing process.
With regard to your specific enquiry concerning Starburst Choozers we would advise that this product contains flavourings during the manufacture of which a small amount of the naturally occurring form of alcohol – ethanol is sometimes used as an extraction solvent, however this is significantly removed during the flavourings manufacturing process and any residues carried over into final product would be minute - lower than those that occur naturally in many common foods. and have no effect on consumers of the finished product. We therefore do not declare this product as suitable for a Halal diet.
We hope this information if of assistance to you.
