A picture from 1371AH

This is a famous picture and the four places with green roofs surrounding the Kaba'ah were used by the different 4 Madhahib, correct? So, I have a few questions about this:
1) When and for what purpose were these added?
2) Is it known, which Madhahib used which one?
3) Did people pray together or at different timings?
4) If they didn't pray together, then does this not go against the spirit of Islam?
5) When and why was they taken down again?

I think it was Shaykh ibn Abdul Wahhab who had them taken down and began the practice of only one jama'ah. If so, then i'm sure people wouldn't disagree with him on this issue. imagine having 4 different jama'ahs for every salah.

This is another misnomer and twisting of history by some from the present day Salafees. These Musallas were used by Scholars to teach and impart rulings of their Madhabs but not to lead Salah. We have hundreds of years of documented history of Haramain and Islamic world and there is no evidence of four (4) separate congregations taking places.
Yes, there were issues between Scholars of Madhabs
Yes, there were political wranglings
Yes, there were issues between Ashar'ees and Hanbalees
But these issues came about around the 5th or 6th century and could/should have been dealt with. In Indian Sub-continent Scholars were used or some volunteered to get used for political wranglings.
NONE OF THIS is an excuse ro RIP THE HEARTH OUT of 1000 years of solid Islamic Scholarship and replace it with "My way or the Highway Saudi Islam".
This ignorant mentality of Saudees is visible everywhere...Some people do Bidah at historical sites and how do the Saudees deal with the issue? They bulldoze Islamic historical sites and erase our history and disconnect our youth from the past.
If there were so called issues with the Scholars of 4 Madhabs then since the Government had power they could have been dealt with by moving these areas or sacking trouble-making Scholars etc. INSTEAD they shut shop and replaced it with a system which imposes a certain view on everybody and this is precisely what Imam Malik (RA) refused to do and got tortured for.
The fact that these four (4) stations existed shows how totelrant and accomodating the Ummah was i.e. we (Hanafees) may disagree with Shaf'aes on certain issues but we give them a chance to propagate and teach their Madhab although we Hanafees (Ottomans) had the political and military rule (and power) and so on and so forth.
Diversity can be celebrated and worked with.
Or it can be ripped apart and replaced with Authoritarian'ism and there is a famous German who tried to do things similar to what Saudees have done to us, both have miserably failed. but Saudees have indeed cost the Ummah immensly.
The most criminal aspect of Saudi Islam is to suppress the re-establishment of Khilafah and use its control of Haramain to continue to distract Muslims from this cause.

Assalamu alaykum
Imams of 4 madhabs would lead the salah by turn. Like it is happening now all the imams of haramain are leading by their turn.
The salafees spread fitnah by twisting the four musallah story. I heard from a scholar, the issue was more political rather a inter-madhahib one.
If the salafees claim that they have unified the ummah, they are wrong. Today if the hanafees(which form more than half the crowd in haram during haj season) say; we would not pray behind a hanbli imam and we would pray separately what would the saudees do. USE FORCE. So where is the salafi claim that they have unified the ummah. A day may come the present monarchs may lose power, then will it happen that the four musallahs will be back. NO. we hanafees will continue to pray behind the hanbli imam.

The same happened in egypt under the then shafi' Salahudeen ayubi. you find many places which they call khanqa which were used to house students & teach the fiqh of the four madhabs.
