As salaamu alaykum.

I am trying to identify which countries tend to produce the majority of their Ulema locally up to the highest levels (at least in terms of the fiqh of the madhab dominant in their country), without necessarily having to send their best and brightest abroad to gain such mastery.

I have compiled, for the time being, the following list. The countries are listed in alphabetical order. The numbers next to them are only for the sake of order; they are not in any way a "ranking", because it seems like everyone gets very sensitive on here when any such attempt is made.

1)Egypt
2)India
3)Mauritania
4)Morocco
5)Pakistan
6)Saudi Arabia
7)Syria (Hanafi, Shafii, and Hanbali fiqh in particular)
8)Yemen

There were also some other countries which I was not sure about with regards to whether or not their most accomplished Ulema are produced at home or abroad. Those countries are listed below.

1)United Arab Emirates
2)Kuwait
3)Nigeria
4)Qatar
5)Senegal
6)Sudan
7)Tunisia

Does anyone disagree with my first list? If so, which countries do you feel should be added to, or deleted from, that list?

Please note that I am asking above is not a list of which countries tend to have the most high ranking Ulema, but which ones tend to produce them locally. For example, there may be a great number of elite Ulema in say, Ethiopia, but Ethiopian Ulema may all have traditionally received their advanced religious education in Egypt or Yemen. So despite having a great number of Ulema, since they didn't produce them, generally speaking, within the confines of their country, they wouldn't qualify to be added to that first list that I produced above.

If some of my more knowledge brothers/sisters could share thoughts and knowledge about the issue, please do so.

Jazakallahu Khair.

Wa'salaam.

I don't see how the Maulana that you just mentioned in any way shows that Indonesia or Malaysia produce their Ulema locally. Am I missing something?

:salam: Sunni_Student786,

I would just like to say that Dubai is not a country on it's own, rather, it's a city of the UAE = United Arab Emirates (a rather famous one at that).

You have it in your 2nd list. As far as producing scholars locally, I don't think they do because it's a very small country and I don't think they have a lot of good Islamic institutions over there (none come to my mind).

Abu Dhabi and Sharjah were much better Islamically (I don't know about now). Dubai is a hub of tourism, big buildings, shopping malls, and one construction project after another and not really a 'spiritual' city so to say.

I was raised in the UAE and lived there for 19 years...

Wassalaam

its true, in indonesia they still using a method called the "pandok" system that is as old as islam in indonesia. they usualy complete up to & including mihaaj at these pandoks & then they would travel. sometimes studying all the same kitaabs over just in arabic. there is no need for them to leave but these guys have such a desire for deen theres no stopping them.
