Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have a child who just entered into 24 month. Alhamdullilah I am lucky enough I able to continuing breast feeding to my son till today. However, when i should stop breast feed to him? In fact, my son is fond of breast feed and proabably he will not give up easily.
So I need to resist him gradually from breast feed. My question is upto which age I can continue breast feed to my child? Upto 32 months is Halal? I wish to stop him by the age of max 32 months.
And is there any good way to resist my son from breast feed?

There is a Quranic ayah that says "The mothers shall give suck to their children for two whole years, for those who wish the suckling to be completed..." (Surah Baqarah)
....and here is a fatwa from Mufti Husain Sb:
Fatwa # 9838 from Germany Date: Wednesday, November 12th 2003
Category
Child Upbringing (Tarbiyyah)
Title
1)How long is the term for breastfeeding? 2)Will their be any sin on the mother if she stops breastfeeding before that time prescribed
Question
1)How long is the term for breastfeeding? Is it 2 years or 2 and a half years because in one place in the Quran it says 2 and in another it says 2 and a half. 2)Will their be any sin on the mother if she stops breastfeeding before that time prescribed by Allah (that is if she does not have a proper valid reason and just wants to stop without any illness or anything)? Jazakallah khair!
Answer
1. 2 years. There is difference of opinion however the prefered view is 2 years. (Bahisti Zewar, Ahsanul Fatawa)
2. If the child is eating solids before 2 years and the mother feels that there would be no harm in weaning him before 2 years then she has the full right to do so. (Shaami, Bahisti Zewar)

You should start weaning him now. I know it seems very difficult, but trust I’m a pro :-) ..... it’s not as difficult as it seems. Well, maybe :-) . If you get help from dad, to take over when baby gets fussy you could do it in a week or two, insha allah. If it’s really, really difficult and baby won’t take other solids though, then you could do it for a few more months. But you defiantly need to stop at 30 months max.

Thank you very much soupy. Alhamdullillah my child is taking all kind of normal food including solids.
But he is just kind of addicted in taking mothers milk. especially while sleeping or napping. Just befor sleep he needs to take milk and after a while he fall into sleep. without this usually he doesn't sleep.
However, in normal day time he takes maximum 3/4 times for couple of minute.
So I need to overcome the situation mainly while his sleeping time.

2 years is max, I told my sister in law that and her son was still being fed well into his second year and she was finding it very difficult to get him off. Whenever he would cry she would give in. And then she would hit him, it was a really bad situation and difficult for her.
This doesn't help either mother or child. I know it will be hard, especially if a child gets cranky, but stay strong and find something else to keep him busy to take his mind off of your milk. You have to be gentle but persistent.

poor child that's awful! the mother needs to go to parenting classes and learn you don't hit kids, how unIslamic

Mothers should breastfeed their children for two whole years, (that is) for those who wish to complete the (period of) breastfeeding....
Baqarah: 233
The total period of suckling
The second rule is about the total period of suckling which is two years. Unless there be some special reason, it is the right of the child that this period be completed.
From this we also know that the total time given for suckling is full two years after which suckling should not be done. However, on the basis of some verses of the Qur'an and reports from ahadith, Imam Abu Hanifah ruled that if it was carried on over a period of 30 months or two and a half years, all the legal effects of suckling shall be applicable and if this was done because of the weakness of the child, a legitimate excuse, it would then be no sin either. But breast-feeding a child after completing two and a half years is unanimously haram (forbidden).

I am asking where the proof is that it is haraam to do so. Until there is nothing in the sources to indicate that it is wrong to do so, one is free to do so if one does deem it conducive to the wellbeing of ones child.

The proof is in the Quranic ayah provided and the fatwa from the Hanafi school of thought has also been provided in the previous posts. You are free to take it and act upon it or go for the view of others who are not Hanafi is that is what you are inclined to do.
But please tell me, what you think the limit is or is there no limit and a woman can continue to breastfeeed her 7-8 year old child if she deems it conducive ot the wellbeing of the child?

In which Hanafi fiqh books does it state that breastfeeding ones own child after 2 year is haraam ? No indo-pak books but real Hanafi books please.
