[In the talk “Need for Tablīgh”, Maulāna Ashraf ῾Ali Thānvi rehmatullāhi ῾alayh says]
Sahābah had undertaken numerous sacrifices for the propagation of Islām. Today we are wiping away those sacrifices through our heedlessness. Some non-Muslims claim that Islām was spread through the sword, and now it is our time (and we are in power), so we are using the same might.

Maulana Sulaiman Ali Nadwai and Maulana Mansur Nu'mani :rahma: wrote quite a few excellent passages about the subject in their book, seeratun Nabi :saw:
I wish I had them with me.

Salam Alaykum,
I am somewhat confused by the original article: While Islam itself was not forced in people, is it not the Islamic worldview that the whole world should come under the rule of the Muslims (somewhat akin to the "free nations" who believe that nations should be forced into liberal democracy even with bombs)?
I was under the impression that had the Muslims not waged offensive Jihad to rid the lands of non-Islamic rulers and policies, a very small percentage of the people today would be Muslims as opposed to the reality where almost one-fourth of the world is Muslim. Yes, Indonesia and some other places are there, but we also have Central Asia, India, Egypt, Syria, and many other lands were millions upon millions would have never entered Islam had the preaching been fully peaceful and without an overriding political and social reality which encouraged people to accept Islam.
hoohoo

Mufti Taqi Usmani explains the different stages of Jihad very well in Takmilatu Fath al-Mulhim, a work completed in 1994, as an introduction to Kitab al-Jihad:
