View Full Version : POLL: Do you eat from the same plate?

Verily, I love this practice. Vote above.

When I eat with brothers or even family from the same plate, I feel such a sense of community and safety. If we are all eating from the same plate, then our concerns are also the same. All the more when we are sitting. It ensures equal distribution and that we all finish eating at the same time. If I eat more, my brother next to me will also eat more. If I eat less, then they will also eat less.

I also noticed when you say Bismillah, there is more baraka in the meal- like you can actually "feel" better through the meal, and I think thats part of what baraka entails.

Many Americans cry about the destruction of the family, the absence of the family dinner, but for us, alhamdulillah, we still have this practice alive.

I am convert to Islam, and before I was married, my friends and I always did this.

After I got married my family does it.

I am actually suprised from the poll results, I thought more muslim families did this.

I've always ate together with the family but only learned and understood its significance in Jamaa'ah. Now I feel awkward when I eat alone sometimes, with the exception of eating around Non-Muslims.

Before it was common practise at our home to eat from one plate. But it has really been along time... need to revive this blessed practise. Of course in Jama'at you always share plates with saathis. But honestly sometimes I feel (a bit) uncomfortable when the hands on one plate become too many.

What's most important, in my opinion is that friends and family eat together in the same gathering, frequently and habitually. Then there are the little acts of love and care where you take food out for them, or go fetch them something they need, or insist to pay for their food etc. That's the main ingredient in increasing love and affection for each other.
Eating in one plate is a minor thing, to me. Their company is the major thing.

I wouldn't *not* eat with my family or friends as a rule, as I've done it on many occasions in tabligh or some weddings. Its just not always convenient to eat from one plate, especially on a dinner table with normal-sized plates. There's also the matter of spread of disease. Suppose someone has coldsores (herpes)... would you feel comfortable eating in the same plate as them. I know I wouldn't.

Wa aleikum salaam,
Sorry, newbie poll. :)

I think concerns of hygiene are legit, but I think that should be a reason for proper health education, and an opportunity to show you care, rather than to ignore each other.

I agree, brother.

Eating together causes love to grow between people and so does feeding them.

I'm just hesitant about eating with a person who uses the same istinjaa hand for eating and the one who doesn't wash hands after relieving his self.

My bad if that comes off as gross.

Some people eat with both hands as they somehow find it difficult to eat with one hand items such as prata naan etc.

Yes that's true, some people do that with certain types of foods.

Tahaarah in Islam is something to make shukr and hamd for.

I added another option. Hope it's okay with br Dawud.

I've always seen my parents eat in one plate, and we siblings used to share plates (2 kids per plate). I've always liked sharing plates, though I haven't recently with any friends. At home its always sharing plates, unless one person is eating something another doesn't like.

i don't i guess because it was never practiced growing up. But i have shared a plate with my husband, or with my children. However there are certain elders i would not wish to share a plate with, due to their poor hygiene. I do have ocd and it's difficult for me to see past whether the person washed their hand with soap.

It is a good practice, insha'Allah i will try to share a plate with my family more. Usually it's so hectic im left eating alone, whilst everyone eats before more. Eating on the floor is beautiful too, makes me feel more humble and grateful to Allah for the food.

Eating together is a means of barakat (blessings)

The Sahaabah :anhum: had complained to Nab :saw:, “We eat but do not seem to be getting satiated.” Nabi :saw: asked them, “Do you all eat individually?” They replied in the affirmative. Nabi :saw: then said, “Eat together in a group and read bismillah. In it lies barkat.” (Abu Dawood/Jam`ul-Fawaa’id, vol 1, pg 292)
Further, Allah Ta`ala loves that meal from which many people partake of. (`Awaarif-ul-Ma`aarif, pg 176)

This practice is not a custom in my home, however not too recently I had the experience with some foreign sisters, it was pretty ok. Especially one sister joked and ate from my portion (probably to check my reaction or something, lol) then she turned the plate around a bit and I had no choice to eat a bit from her portion on the plate that we were sharing.(there is a special name for this particular plate we used; bigger than a usual plate, i forgot what the sisters from Ghana called it), I do agree it's a wonderful, warmish feeling sharing like this. :-)

You can't really pass judgement on a dish unless tried cooked by different people. My first reaction to Byrani, did'nt go all to well either when cooked by an Indian Aunty, but by a Pakistani it was pretty good.

:salam:

when i first saw this poll i automatically assumed that most muslims naturally share their plate with others, but after reading some of the posts it seems it is not as common and natural for some muslims as i first thought.

maybe it is different amongst the indians/pakistanis (going by my experience). in my home it is very common to eat from the same plate and we do it without any thought. even amongst my friends (both deeni and non-deeni) it would not be seen as something strange. in fact, amongst some of the brothers i know it would seem strange NOT to share a plate with someone else.

from the top of my head, all deobandi groups encourage eating from the same plate; tablighis, sufis, jihadis.

Isn't eating together and eating in the same plate different? I think most Muslims would probably eat together as a family. I was asking whether eating in the same plate is a sunnah of Rasulullah :saw:.

I'm sorry for being way off topic, but brother xs11ax, tablighis, sufis, jihadis aren't exactly groups. If someone is more inclined to one aspect of deen doesn't make him belong to a separate group than one who is inclined to another.

just sayin'. I dont want a debate or anything.

:salam:

if you dont want a debate then dont bring it up in the first place.

by tablighis i meant tabligh jamaat. tabligh jamaat is a deobandi group started by deobandi ulama.

by sufis groups i meant the deobandi sufi groups specifically as i dont have any experience of non-deobandi sufis and their conduct.

by jihadi groups i meant the deobandi affiliated jihadi groups such as jaish or whatever they are calling themselves nowadays. again i cannot say about other jihadi groups as i dont have any experience of them.

from my experience all of the above deobandi groups actively encourage eating from the same plate. other groups may also do the same but i dont have any experience about other groups.

Assalamulykum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,

well, where i come from...on special and big occasions, like weddings etc...all eat together..4 people eat from a single huge plate..but the sad part is ,quite alot of food gets wasted because they tend to make it too grand..but otherwise, its good..( the food is awesome!)

wassalamulykum
