Yes I believe he knows all that. I am sure not all scholars on this list approved of each other and as you mentioned some didn't even consider their counterparts on this list to be muslim. I believe this list attempts to list the best scholars in the 20th century with diverse backgrounds, beliefs, etc. ....

Shaykh Gibril before starting this list says :

Regarding the remark that the Ghumaris are or were the latter-
day stars of Islamic scholarship, this is correct if we mean
that they were stars among many other stars, but incorrect
if we mean giant stars. I would rank among the giant stars
the Hafiz Muhammad ibn Ja`far al-Kattani, the Hafiz Badr al-
Din al-Hasani - both were Damascene Morrocans - and Imam
Ahmad Rida Khan.

I see Shaykh G.F. has put the title Mufti of India next to Ahmed Reza Khan (astonished)

Never the less, i think the REAL grand mufti of India should be on that list. Heres his Bio

This great son of Islam was born in 1325 and lived to become one of the greatest luminaries of his time. Nevertheless, describing the personality of Hazrath Mufti Saheb (rahmatullah alaihi) is an almost impossible task. The most eloquent words would hopelessly fail in truly describing the knowledge, brilliance, piety, kindness, compassion, humility and the numerous other qualities which he embodied. He was an ustaad to thousands of students, a mentor to thousands of diciples and a kind and compassionate father to all who came into contact with him.

His compassion and kindness knew no bounds. It was indeed his first nature. Every year he personally took care of the monthly expenses and of the various needs of numerous students of Darul Uloom Deoband, Saharanpur and other institutions. There were instances when he gave away his valuable personal kitaabs ... and there were occasions where he even gave away the clothing he had been wearing at that time. Despite this, he never regarded himself as having shown any favour to anyone. He greatly loved the poor, he loved being with them and he loved living and even passing away like them. Hazrath (rahmatullah alaihi) was also forever concerned about the Deeni progress of others, especially the poor.

It was the normal practice of Hazrath Mufti Saheb (rahmatullah alaihi) for many years that daily he would recite 15 paras or more in salaah. During the month of Ramadaan, he would complete one Qur’an daily.Hazrath Mufti Saheb (rahmatullah alaihi) taught Bukhari Sharief for many years at Kanpur as well as at Darul Uloom Deoband. Besides teaching Bukhari Sharief and other books of hadith at Deoband, he also graced the distinguished position of Grand Mufti of that august institution for many years.

To date 22 thick volumes of his fatwas have been published. Besides the fatwas he authored several books and booklets. Upon his instruction the publication of many magazines and newsletters was undertaken by various institutions. Together with this Hazrath Mufti Saheb (R.A.) travelled to many countries for the purpose of disseminating the Deen of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). South Africa was particularly fortunate that Hazrath Mufti Saheb (rahmatullah alaihi) repeatedly blessed our shores with his presence and benifitted the Ummah with his teachings. It was also the good fortune of South Africa that this country was blessed with the last days of the life of this great luminary of Islam.

While the hearts of thousands are greatly grieved at the loss of their guide and mentor, the point to consider at this juncture is: What would have pleased Hazrath Faqihul Ummah (rahmatullah alaihi) had he been present?” The simple reply is: “Implementing his teachings and practicing on his advices.” In this light, the ensuing pages are dedicated to various aspects which are important for one and all to keep in mind.

HUMILITY

Hazrath Faqihul Ummah (R.A.) was indeed an embodiment of humility. His teachings are filled with lessons of humility. The desire for name and fame was nowhere to be seen. The following incidents from his life are a lesson to one and all, especially to those who were associated with him:

Mufti Kifaayatullah Gangohi Saheb (R.A.) was appointed as the mufti of Deoband. At that time Hazrath Faqihul Ummah (R.A.) was the assistant mufti of Mazahirul Uloom, Saharanpur. On one occasion when Mufti Kifaayatullah (R.A.) met Hazrath Faqihul Ummah (R.A.), he said to him: “There are thousands of letters and queries that are lying unanswered in the Darul Ifta of Darul Uloom Deoband.” Hazrath Faqihul Ummah (R.A.) replied: “Every week send a hundred or so letters to me. If you cannot arrange this, I will have somebody collect a hundred letters from you every week. At the end of the week he will bring back the replies of the first hundred and collect the next hundred. I will write the replies and leave the place for the signature blank. You can sign them and send them off.” (Introduction to Fataawa Mahmoodia, Vol.3)

This incident is filled with great lessons for us. The extent of compassion, the eagerness to assist others, the readiness to undertake difficulty upon oneself for the cause of Deen and shunning name and fame is all apparent from the above. Thus we also have to follow in these footsteps. May Allah Ta’ala grant us the ability to do so. Aameen.

THE PURPOSE OF BAI’AT

Explaining the various reasons for bai’at, Hazrath Mufti Saheb (R.A.) mentioned the following: “Among the reasons for taking bai’at is to tread the path of sulook. What this means is that a person wishes attain ma’rifat (the recognition of Allah Ta’ala) and gain Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. Hence he makes an effort to rid himself of all evil actions and habits and adopts good character and noble actions. Also, in the pursuit of this goal he wholeheartedly follows the advice of the sheikh and happily undertakes whatever mujaahadah (striving against the nafs) the sheikh prescribes for the purpose of islaahe nafs (inner-self purification). As a result he eliminates from himself the desire for the perishable things of this world. Rather, he develops a strong and deep connection with Allah Ta’ala and becomes forever concious of His Creator. In order to guide him on this path, the sheikh, by the medium of his mashaikh [who link up in an unbroken chain right upto Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)], act as the deputy of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” (Fatawa Mahmoodiyya - Vol.1, Pg. 33)

NECESSITY OF BAI’AT

In reply to a question as to whether complete islaah (reformation and inner-self purification) can take place without becoming associated with a sheikh-e-kaamil, Hazrath (R.A.) writes: “Firstly, without associating oneself with a wali-e-kaamil, generally one does not manage to practice fully on all aspects of the Shariah. Secondly, without such an association, true sincerity is not attained in one’s actions. It is for this reason that after the demise of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) the Sahaaba (R.A.) took bai’at on the hands of Hazrath Abu Bakr (R.A.), thereafter on the hands of Hazrath Umar (R.A.) and so on. This bai’at was not only for allegiance to the khilafah. It was also for strengthening the purification of the inner-self. It is also for this very reason that all senior Ulama of every era, despite being masters in the field of Deeni knowledge, felt the necessity to take bai’at on the hands of a spiritual mentor.....” (Fatawa Mahmoodiyya - Vol. 1, Pg.134)

NEED FOR A SHEIKH

Elaborating on the reasons for deprivation, Hazrath (R.A.) mentioned the following incident: Once Hazrath Thanwi (R.A.) was busy replying to his letters after zuhr salaah. During this time if anybody wished to enquire anything, they would do so. A person sitting in front had wished to ask something. Hazrath Thanwi (R.A.) would repeatedly look at him but would not say anything. This continued until Asr. Finally at Asr time Hazrath turned his attention to him. The person requested forgiveness (for causing the distraction). Hazrath Thanwi (R.A.) then said to him:

“Every time I looked at you, the incident where you swore at me pierced me like a dagger in the heart. As a result I was greatly disturbed by this ... when you have pierced the dagger into me, did you also do anything to help to heal the wound?” The person replied: “You had clearly announced that you have forgiven all those who had abused you, etc. Hence I understood from this that I too have been forgiven.” Upon this Hazrath Thanwi (R.A.) said: “Even now I say the same thing - that I have totally forgiven everyone including you. I will take no revenge, neither in this world nor in the hereafter. But what can I do about my heart? Whenever I want to turn my attention to you, the incident stabs me like a dagger. I have forgiven you, but what have you done to remedy the situation?” The person replied that he had made tawba from the act he had committed. Hazrath Thanwi (R.A.) further said: “It is fine that you have repented. However, did you inform me of this repentance? I was under the impression that you still hold the same views that you expressed at that time. Now you will not derive any benefit from me. It is best that you go to some other sheikh.” (Malfoozaat - Vol. 8, Pg.18)

A great lesson is to be taken from this incident. While the mashaaikh totally forgive those people who have harmed them and they harbour no malice for anyone, being human they are also hurt emotionally by the ill conduct of people. This natural feeling becomes a barrier for the mureed from deriving any benefit. May Allah Ta’ala save us from causing inconvenience to anyone, especially His special servants.

DA’WAT AND TABLIGH

Hazrath (R.A.) would time and again greatly emphasise the work of da’wat and tabligh. He personally has spent much time out in the jamaats with Hazrath Moulana Muhammad Ilyas Khandelwi (R.A.). In one talk delivered in South Africa, Hazrath (rahmatullah alaihi) said:

“..... Therefore this (work of Da’wat and tabligh) is a great bounty of Allah Ta’ala. Every person can take part in this work of tabligh. Those who dedicate their entire lives to this effort, what can then be said - it is nurun ala nur (absolutely excellent). Those who cannot do this can go for seven chillas or three chillas. Even those who spend just a little time will also benefit. However, to the extent of one’s sacrifice one will gain success.” (Mawaaiz - Vol.8, Pg.26) In a letter addressed to Hazrath Sheikhul Hadith Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya Saheb (R.A.), Hazrath (R.A.) writes:

“I was blessed with the ziyaarah of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in a dream. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to me: “Do two things, you will be my companion in Jannah - ta’leem and tabligh.” Hence I have commenced with tafseer of the Qur’an after fajar in a nearby musjid. Some musallies are also ready for tabligh. We have decided to commence this Thursday.” (dated 25 Rabius Thani 1372 A.H.) On several occasions while in South Africa, despite his ill health Hazrath (R.A.) travelled all the way from Johannesburg to Cape Town specifically to attend the Ijtima there. At many Ijtimas he addressed the gathering and encouraged them to take part in this work.

Thus Hazrath (R.A.) was himself at the forefront of the effort of da’wat and tabligh as well. May Allah Ta’ala enable us to emulate his example. Aameen.

This is a comprehensive list of the Ulemas with some ups and downs plus, min 5 to 10%. As usual the debate between deobandis and barelvis has been highlighted. Seems to be a never ending issue. A simple visit to the sub continent can help witness the ideoligical clashes as per se.

Should have contained the magnificient Shah Anwar Kashmiri Rahimullah and also Shah Islamil Shaheed Rahimullah. Shah Anwar Kashmiri Rahimullah was the forerunner of fighting against the Ahmedis (Qadiyanis) and Shah Ismail Shaheed Rahimmulah was the legendar Shaheer who got martyred in the Battle of the Sikhs near Balakot (which has been leveled to the ground by the recent earthquake).

May Allah have his mercy and blessing on all those who have fought, worked and died in HIS way. Ameed Wa Thum Ameen

Assalmu alaykum,

in my opinion the star of the last century is Sheikul hadith Muhammed Zakariyyah and theres a few good reasons why i think he is.

1. evey age/ cenury seems to have a specific need. The greatest need of the century was general ignorance amongst the masses of the muslims on even the most basic duties of Islam. Nothing was as successful as tackling this general ignorance than his book fazail amaal, which has guided millions. After the Quran it is probably the second most read book, and its NOT just tablighis that use it. I mean who else, what group or person or book has guided as many millions as through this book? Nothing has been as successfull as far as i know.

2. Every mujadid of every centuray seems to pass away at the start of the new century e.g umar bin abdul aziz (mujadid of 1st century hijri) died 101 hijri, Imam shafi died (mujadid of second century) died 204 hijri, imam ghazali (mujadid of 5thh century) died 505 hijri etc (these dates are off the top of my head but I know they are more or less right) and Shaik Muhammed zakariyyah died 1401 hijri.

3. It is well know amongst the shaiks students about the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) coming to him in a dream informing him he is the qutub of his time, I think this may have been after he wrote the book "virtues of salaat".

4. And having lived most his life in india sub continent he is still blessed by passing away in medina and been buried in janaatul baqi the most blessed graveyard in the world.

Of course Allah knows best , but I don't know of anyone elses who has revived the ummah so much, passed away near the beginning of the new century like mujadids tend to do etc.

and of course theres opinions that state there can be more than one mujadid per century.

was salaam

2. * Mahmud Al-Hasan, Sheikh Al-Hind 1921 India

4 * Anwar Shah Kashmiri 1933 India

5. * Ashraf Ali Thanwi 1943 India

6. * Muhammad Ilyas 1944 India

7. * Shabeer Ahmad Uthmani 1949 India

8. * Husain Ahmad Madani 1957 India

9. * Muhammad Idris Khandehlawi 1974 India

10. * Zafar Ahmad Uthmani 1974 India

It is a fact that all of these scholars mentioned in the list have left a rich legacy of dawah and education that is unparalleled in contemporary times.

The fountainhead of this Deobandi legacy of course is Hazrat Qutb-e-Alam Shaykhul Mashaikh Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi (Quddus Sirraho Ta'ala).

It went from him to one of his foremost students, Shaykhul Hind Mahmud Al-Hasan ra. From him, it went to a multitude of scholars notably:

Imam-ul-Asr Anwar Shah Kashmiri ra (he was the foremost authority in hadith of his times and scholars like Allamah Zahid Al Kawthari ra and Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah ra have paid glowing tributes to his research and knowledge). By many estimates, he memorized well over 100,000 ahadith with their asaneed and thus was a Hafiz-e-Hadith. He had a photographic memory, subhan Allah!

Hakeemul Ummat Ashraf Ali Thanwi ra (he was the foremost authority in tasawwuf of his times and one of the dearest spiritual successor to Hazrat Haji Sahib Imdaadullah ra. He authored well over 1000 books in fiqh, hadith, tasawwuf and other uloom. It is mentioned that people saw noor coming out of his fingers at his death! His spiritual successors number well over 100.

Ameer-e-Tableegh Muhammad Ilyas ra (he revived the work of dawah in Indian subcontinent due to which millions of non-practicing Muslims changed their lives and became obedient practicing Muslims. His dawah spread to the four corners of the world and even non-Muslims have accepted Islam at the hands of the Jamaat.)

Shaykhul Arab wal Ajam Husain Ahmad Madani ra (He taught Hadith in front of the Rauda of our beloved prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for about 19 years. He accompanied Shaykhul Hind ra in the famous movement of 'reshmi rumaal' and taught Bukhari Shareef at Darul Uloom Deoband for many years. Shaykhul Hadith Saleemullah Khan (founder of Jamia Farooqia, Karachi) is among his several students.

Hazrat Shabeer Ahmad Uthmani ra (He is the author of the famed Tafseer-e-Usmani and Arabic Sharah of Sahih Al Muslim whose takmila was written by Mufti Taqi Usmani).

The legacy of Hazrat Gangohi also continued through Shaykh Khaleel Ahmad Saharanpuri ra (author of Bazal Al Majhood, Arabic commentary of Sunan Abi Dawood) whose foremost student was Shaykhul Hadeeth Muhammad Zakariya ra (author of several Arabic works most notably Aujaz ul Masalik, commentary of Muwatta Imam Malik).

From Hakeemul ummat Ashraf Ali Thanwi ra, it went to his nephew Maulana Zafar Ahmad Uthmani ra (famed author of I'la as Sunnan, an arabic hadith work in large 19 volumes that provides proofs for Hanafi positions).

From Imam-ul-Asr Anwar Shah Kashmiri ra, it went to:

Mufti-e-Azam Pakistan, Muhammad Shafi' ra (Foremost authority in fiqh of his times and author of well over 100 published tracts in Arabic and Urdu. He is Mufti Taqi Usmani's father)

Muhaddith-ul-Asr Yusuf Binnori ra (founder of Jamia Binnori Town and a great authority in Hadith who has written an Arabic commentary of Tirmidhi Shareef).

Shaykhul Hadith wa Tafseer Muhammad Idris Khandehlawi ra (author of Arabic commentary of Mishkaat Al Masabeeh and other precious works).

Shaykh Abul Hasan Nadvi ra, whose name and services need no introduction took some lessons from Shaykhul Islam Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani ra. He also benefitted from the knowledge and wisdom of Maulana Muhammad Ilyas ra and spiritually benefitted from Maulana Ahmed Ali Lahori ra and Maulana Abdul Qadir Raipuri ra.

I know that Allamah Habib Al-Rahman Al-A'zami ra held a very high position in verification of Ahadith but I'm not sure as to which Deobandi scholar he studied with. Same for Mufti Wali Hasan ra and Shaykh Abdur Rasheed Al-Numani ra.

I have Aap Beeti, Tazkiratur Rasheed, Sawanih Mufakkirul Islam (Shaykh Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi), Nuqoosh-e-Raftagan, and some other books that provide brief glimpses into the lives of our elders. I personally like Hazrat Mufti Taqi Usmani's Nuqoosh-e-Raftagan since it details the lives of many of our elders that he came in contact with such as Mufti Yusuf Binnori ra, Shaykhul Hadith Zakariya etc. I also admire Hazrat's urdu writing style very much.

'The inability to weep is due to committing excessive sins. That is due to not fearing Allah which results in the hardness of the heart. The hardness of the heart is caused by the love of the world.’

(Musnadul Firdaws vol.4 pg.402; Hadith6690)

You might be interested in knowing that this hadith is Maudu' (fabricated).
Allamah Suyuti has classified it as such in his zayl al-La'ali Pg.176.

Also, quoting "Musnadul Firdaws" is not correct as the name of the book you are quoting isn't Musnad al-Firdous, instead it is Firdous al-Akhbar, compiled by the father of the author of Musnad al-Firdous.
Musnad al-Firdous has never been published.

May Allah Ta'ala grant us all the ability to be cautious in what we ascribe to our beloved Habib sallallahu alaihi wasallam.

Don't forget one the most important scholars, the Muhaddith of our time, the Muhaddith of Haramayn, who passed away not too long ago.. Sayyid Muhammad ibn Alawi al Maliki. You can read about him here (http://www.sunnipath.com/resources/Questions/qa00004599.aspx)

You're right traveler. You know Shaykh GF Haddad got Ijazah from Shaykh Ibn Alawi?

One confusing this here... Sheikh Haddad in his book ALBANI AND HIS FREINDS critisisng Sheikh Gangohi (rahimaullah) and sheikh khalil ahmed sharanpuri (rahimullah), yet at the the same time he refers to him as a star scholar. Whats all that about

godilali
17-06-2006, 11:27 PM
He also praises them as well. Just because one disagrees on certain issues, it doesn't mean he does not respect the other (eg: his opinions of the Ghumaris.) However, Dr. Haddad does come off as harsh at times.

Mufti Wali Hassan Tonki was a student of sayyid Husain Ahmad Madani and Disciple of Shaykhul Hadith r.a.

Students of Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani taught at Darul Ulum Deoband, Banuri Town Madrassa, Jamiatur Rasheed, Farooqia and Nusratul Ulum.

Students of Allama Anwer Shah Kashmiri and Hadhrat Thanawi taught at Darul Ulum Karachi, Jamia Ashraffia and Khairul Madaris.

Students of Shaykhul Hadith Zakariyya teach at Saharanpur and Markaz Raiwind.

though the list is not exhaustive and conclusive and no such distinction is made in the scholarly circles............... e.g Mufti Taqi Uthmani is both grand student of Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri and Syed Hussain Ahmad madani and obtained ijazah from Shaykhul Hadith Zakariyya. And Mufti Rasheed Ahmad Ludhyanwwi was a direct student of Syed Husain Ahmad being Shaykhul Hadith of Darul Ulum Karachi. And, elders teaching at Markaz Raiwind come from different schools.
