Assalamu 'Alaikum,
As it is black history month in October I was thinking of doing some lectures on Black Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) at our local circle.
However, I have very little knowledge in this area and therefore if you guys could help me out by creating a list of the black companions of the Prophet and any information on their lives that you may have.
Jazakum Allahu Khair for your help.

NICE! I like that article very enlightening...anyone who hasn't read should read inshallah.
Also by the way the pure Arabs were black. Those from south Arabia (Yemen).

If you can try reading 'BILAL' - The Abbysinian Outrunner by Syed Iqbal Zaheer. Its a very good read....

* Bilal bin Rabah (RA)
* Wahshi ibn Harb (RA)
* Zaid bin Haritha (RA) (although he is from the tribe of Makhdoom which was north of Makka???) and his son Usama (RA): In Hayatus Sahabah (Vol 2: Belittling and Looking Down at a Muslim), Usama is described as having a flat nose with black skin. Interesting that according to Urwa (RA), the people of Yemen reverted to kufr during the time of Abubaker (RA) because they expressed annoyance for being delayed when Rasulullah (SAW) waited for Usama (RA)... thus belittling Rasulullah's (SAW) action.
* An Abyssinian man died after hearing the description of Jannat from Rasulullah (SAW)... name not mentioned.
You should read Hayatus Sahabah by Shaikh Yusuf Kandhelwi... get the translation by Mufti Afzal Hussein Elias... the other translations are very difficult to read.
