Asalam Alykum,
Can any brothers and sisters give tips on training nafs?
Are there any good books written by muslim scholars on training will power or nafs?
JazakAllah khair

Basic principles are to observe your Salaah, and keep in Wudu. Don't take your salah for granded, as some do, you should feel privaliged that Allah s.w.t has given you an oppertunity to worship him. Also while doing your wudu, it's a privaledge <however u spells it..
Keep in good company, if your alone keep busy with good things, pick the better option always over the bad... ie t.v or book.. yh t.v isn't the better option ok :p
Erm... there is more much more infact, but atm I got maths to work on and I can only see numbers in front of me, not letters so....I will leave this as it is, and get back to you insha'Allah. Obviously insha'Allah other's will do this better, just a few simple points from your sis Tc Salam

JazakAllah khair brother, I was looking for a book like this. I went through and il start reading right away..
I know observing fasts, controlling gaze, staying away from evil, sadaqa and prayers etc are all ways of training nafs and I try my best to do them but there must be some ways or methods or some kind of exercise one can perform?

The exercises can be many to control your nafs. You can stop it from consuming halal to train it to stop from haram. For example you feel like eating a cake, but you stop yourself from eating it. Then you feel like drinking pepsi, you stop yourself from drinking it for a specific time period and you can increase the time as you get stronger gradually.
Another way to train yourself nafs if to fix a time where you would sit and do zikr. Begin with 5 mins and gradually increase upto hours. And stick to your program no matter what. This way insha'Allah your nafs will be trained.
Try going on 3 days without food, only water. I started from 3 days and worked upto 14 days without food alhamdulillah. Only water :) It trains your nafs, makes u so spiritual that you wonder where all this energy is coming from.

Seriously, you can go 14 days without food.:alhamd:
On the subject at hand, "The Book of Assistance" by Imam Abdullah al-Haddad would be good place to start. A book of very Ghazalian sufism, but also very practical.

It's not difficult alhamdulillah once you get food off your mind :)

Masha Allah brother, you make me so happy. I didnt know its possible to go without food for 14 days, you must have an excellently trained nafs. This is the first time I see an individual with this ability.
Brother I do try to control my nafs that way you described and the way sister Ilm_sika described.
Keep it coming brother, what ever you feel like will benefit me and the others would be nice of you and others to share. I am at a beginner level so need all the help while I can.

I am in no way in an expert on this matter and probably still in nursery when it comes to training nafs. But, I feel that if you have a stronger eeman controlling the nafs becomes a lot easier.
If you search on the forum for increasing eeman you will come across a plethora of links, articles.
I have found the following books/articles to really help:
Poor Man's Book of Assistance (Shaykh Hamza Yusuf commentary) (http://www.ilookisee.co.uk/Lectures/CD%20Lectures/Hamza%20Yusuf%20-%20Poor%20Man%27s%20Book%20of%20Assistance.htm)
- I know a lot of people have their own opinions about the Shaykh. (I hope this doesn't turn into one of those threads)
Don't Be Sad (http://www.dont-be-sad-alqarni.com/)
Written in a real no-nonsense style. Highly recommended.
You can find some of the extracts on the fourm as a sister posted them up recently here (http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?63940-Don-t-be-sad-Some-extracts)
I have often thought about giving the book to friends and cousins but have refrained from doing so as they may think that I view them as a manic-depressive. :cheesygri
Inspirational Stories and History (http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?60-Inspirational-Stories-and-History)
Apart from other things. This is what sets out sunniforum from other forums. We all need to be inspired and a lift now and then. So, the admins at SF created a permanent section.
Another, good one for stories is QISAS (http://qisas.com/)
How Can you deny the oneness of Allah? (http://www.islamictube.com/watch/1046452564/No-Beats-Necessary--NBN---How-can-you-deny-)
The lyrics are really beautiful. Great eeman booster. Best thing is that there are no beats (musical instruments) at all so even the most hard-line nasheed critic would struggle to find something wrong.
If you like this then definitely worth heading down to SF's (yes, they are at it again! :cheesygri) Poetry/Nasheed section (http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?35-Poetry-Anasheed).
Sacred Learning (http://sacredlearning.org/)
Great source of audio lectures!
Start with Self by Br Julaybib (http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?23911-Start-With-the-Self.&highlight=julaybib)
For most people, the brother in less than 3 years is a legend and probably one of the younger members on the forum. If it was up to me it would be an obligatory thread before everyone joins the site... but at 765 posts and still growing it could be quite an ask. :cheesygri
Last but by no means least find good company whether this be through a study circle/class.
Books/articles will only get us so far.
I am not sure whether the helps answer your original query as these are more eeman boosters rather than specific exercises in training your nafs. But, insha'allah, if you have these in your armoury the Jihad-al-nafs will be easier. :-)
Things definitely become easier once you start making habits of good practices. In the Poor Man's Book of Assistance, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf describes how people who never exercise find it difficult to muster motivation whereas those who exercise regularly, feel deficient when they do not exercise. :-)
You can thank the other brothers/sisters on the forum who recommended the above originally.
And, if you find any benefit from the above, it is all from Allah.
All the best, Bro

No worries Bro.
I would recommend the following thread on Imam Al Ghazali (http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?63019-Ihya-Uloom-al-Din)
Post 20 recommends the following:
Mukhtasar Minhaj Al-Qasidin (Towards the Hereafter)
This work has taken Important Points and Objectives from The Minhaj Al-Qasidin of Ibn Al-Jawziyy which in tern is a Summary of that Magnus Opus of Imam al-Ghazali The 'Ihya Ulum Ad-Din', however Ibn Al-Jawziyy Compiled the book free from weak or fabricated Hadith. Ibn Jawzi Says " I Have relied only on Authentic an famous narrations, and I deleted from or added to the original book what seems necessary" The Four Chapters of this Book are:
1) Acts of Worship; 2) Customs; 3) Destructive Flaws; 4) Means of Salvation
at Good Ol' Kallamullah (http://www.kalamullah.com/Books/Towards%20the%20Hereafter.pdf). The wealth of free audio and video on that site is incredible!

different practices and techniques to control nafs should ideally be done under the guidance of a pious Shaykh. The chances of getting things wrong are very high when such practices are adopted without proper supervision.
