For boys, I'd like names with meanings like "Loves God," "strong," "faithful," "loyal," "intelligent," "light," "steady," or other names related to faith or names that honor God by honoring his creation (such as names connected to nature). For girls... well I guess pretty much the same in meaning.
For me, the language that the name is in isn't as important, although I do have preferences as far as which languages I prefer. One of my personal things about naming kids is when people give their daughter a name in Arabic that has a meaning like "beautiful thighs," "full lips," or "sways when she walks." I don't consider those types of names to be Islamic.
In Arabic, I like the names : Zaid (der), Hamza, Mazin... I like Adam and Noah also.
In Arabic for girls, I like: um. Manal, Manar, and that's about it.

Assalamu alaikum wr wb
i get that a lot sometimes ppl say to me your son's name is Ibrahim like Abraham? Im like yes its just pronounced as Ib- Bra-heem. and some end up still saying Ayb-bra-him. or EEEB-ra-Him. or Eye-Bra-Him. I'm like no no... its like this. When he was in the nick name stage of being called Iby ppl could pronounce it correctly, though the only ppl that actually called him that were his grandparents, parents (us), and other family relatives or family friends, neighbors that couldnt pronounce it. Allahu Alim. Though after knowing him for a few years they got to get it right. I try my best to call him by his full given name, and alhamdulillah its working out for the best he prefers to be called by his full name. means he's growing up.. means im getting old. Yet there are some that are still insisted on calling him by short, and even sometimes im so use to it, i do that too...and then im like im sorry ibrahim.... not iby....
Though its just a nick in the household, not on his public records or him trying to be western to fit into the society.
i know many ppl that have very beautiful names masha'Allah yet they change it to the westernized names just so they wont be discriminated and i think why should they be treated that way based on their way? but yet they are. all the ppl have to do is look at the person's name and assume that person is trouble or should keep an extra eye on.
for example, when i was coming back from my visit to my parents in T.O (toronto), coming back into NY. They only searched my bags, not once but 4 times. And they searched me too. I thought this was normal for everyone that was flying, but it was only me that was searched. I guess it's because of my muslim name and also cuz im wearing hijab... but still... i was first in line, or 2nd in line..yet i had to be searched by one guard... yet no one else was searched, everyone got through fine... yet i was asked to remove my shoes and socks...and they went through it all...even my change pocket and my letters, money counting the change, looking at my photos that i had with me, etc... it was very rude.. and that's not the end of it.
a month ago when my hubby and i were in canada, and he was going to juma'ah, we were going to a suhba, and he got stopped at the border for 7 hours. He was a white american guy with an american name, yet his photo showed him with a beard and kufi.. and he was wearing a jelabiya and kufi and we were stopped over, where 4 guards searched the car, went through all the things... they even searched him, and really searched him.
when he asked if he could make his salah, they said we'll let you pray in a cell despite we wont close the door on you, you'll just have complete privacy.
they held us up for so long, yet it was as if they were discriminating against us just based on what we wore and the names and it was just sad.
alhamdulillah we got through but a horrible experience... sisters i know that went through were also searched and stopped for several hours...
and its all just based on names...
and faces..and religions.. d espite they say we dont discriminate, they do.
they just dont say they do as thats against the law...
these are just hush hush..

Assalamu alaikum wr wb
this neighbor of ours's kid would always call my son that Eeboo, eebow. Eye-Bow...Eye Boo. My son would get incredibly upset, he was very sensitive.
So I would ask this kid why are you saying it like that? You're a muslim you should know how to pronounce his name, it's Ibrahim. Its very easy if you say that and I would appreciate it if you call him by that name and not by the other names you say as.. The kid got quiet, and I said you would not like it if I were to call you by your name yet I made fun of it is that fair? is that nice? He said no. I said than the same would apply here as my son is hurt by you making fun of his name, yet you continue to do it because you find it funny, why is that? He was quiet again than shrugged his head as if he didnt know why he was doing that.
Then I said than please do not do it in the future, or I might have to talk to your mom about this problem of yours. Than he was like im sorry i wont do it again and he didnt.. he did apologize to him about it, and they actually became friends.
perhaps that's why he did it to make friends with him and wasnt sure how to.

I have an Arabic name too but since my name is not common Arabic name, they don't search me as thoroughly.
btw the NY-canada borders are known for that type of thing. I remember that one time we crossed the border from Canada and they search the car and found prayer mat and start asking everybody in the car what is that for. "What is this?" (he said sternly) couple of times. It was really funny. I mean. come on. :D
Anyways I would choose Muhammad and Fatima for the names.

wat does khansa mean?
Not sure in classical Arabic, but in Moroccan Arabic "khansa" means "bad/naughty" or "ugly". A Moroccan mother will say to her misbehaving daughter "al-khansa". But that is spelt with a "sîn". Not sure if the name in question is spelt with a "sâd".
ayman... beautiful name wat does it mean?
Ayman comes from the same root as "yamîn" (right) and from what I know it means "on the right".

My best friend's aunt adopted a boy and a girl whom she named Imran and Maryam. That was years back now both of them are abt 12 & 10 yrs old. And just recently she adopted another boy which she beautifully named him Luqman. Alhamdulillah its such a wonderful blessing for her as she said that Allah The Most Merciful has granted her wish on taking in 3 children and naming them after the 3 personalities in the Quran; 'Imran, Maryam, and Luqman al Hakeem. Assalamu alaykum WR WB,
i wasn't sure of the strength of the hadith but I just asked a shaykh 2 weeks ago to confirm this was the case and he was of the same understanding... alhamduliLLAH just found it:
Volume 3, Book 34, Number 331:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
While the Prophet was in the market, somebody, called, "O Abu-l-Qasim." The Prophet turned to him. The man said, "I have called to this (i.e. another man)." The Prophet said, "Name yourselves by my name but not by my Kuniya (name)." (In Arabic world it is the custom to call the man as the father of his eldest son, e.g. Abu-l-Qasim.)
(See Hadith No. 737, Vol. 4)
Volume 4, Book 56, Number 737:
Narrated Anas:
While the Prophet was in the market, a man called (somebody), "O Abu-l-Qasim!' The Prophet turned to him and said "Name yourselves after me but do not call yourselves by my Kuniya."
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/bukhari/056.sbt.html
Otherwise i was pretty much satisfied with Qasim for my 1st isnhALLAH, i thought what better than what the prophet salALLAHU alayhi waslaam named his 1st son?...

walaykum salam WR WB,
u mean from a shari'ah standpoint?.. if so, we'll wait for Maulana eteacher or Mufti-sahab to respond.
or from a virtue (fadha'il) point of view?
My understanding is that there are disliked/discouraged names (which we shouldn't post just in case someone has that name or someone here knows someone dear to them has that name) and there are good names:
Abdul-(any sifat of ALLAH subhanahu wa ta 'ala)
Muhammad (and the other names he salALLAHU alayhi wasalam is referred to e.g. Ahmad, Mustafa etc)
Names of Ambiya
Names of Sahaba (and sahaba of ambiya?)

:ws: yes. because people used to/still have these names before, like rose, yasmin, round, small, big, etc and if you look at javanese names, they have meaning like useful person (gunawan), person who gives a lot (budiman), etc. Would like to know if it is ok to name it like that.
are we obliged to change the last name too if it means something weird like lawless, pretty tree (in german), etc.
andy8118

are we obliged to change the last name too if it means something weird like lawless, pretty tree (in german), etc.
Again from a shari'ah standpoint, throwing it back to the 'ulama.
With regards to practice, people tend to change (either first or last) name if it has shirk connotations or meaning. That is if it is clearly of shirk, or if its root meaning is shirk. The clearest example would be that of a male called Christian. I think it would be fair to say that 99% of the world would associate that to something other than tawhid in ALLAH. What about the name John for a person living in hardcore afghan desert? He might even be mistaken as Jaan (life/spirit)? But in the west it would usually be associated with a non-muslim, and to those perhaps even a little clued up on Christianity would know that is the Christian understanding of John the baptist who is recorded in their bibles as mentioning things which we would regard as kufr. Should the name be changed to Yahya, because the stories of John are incorrect and linked to kufr, whereas the story of Yahya (AS) are linked to fadha'il?
Does shari'ah have stipulations on this? Or is it merely adab?
Wasalam
p.s. "lawless" sounds a little unIslamic in my opinion...

Thank you, it's my nieces name. I love it too!
All the names I've listed are of my sisters/nices/brothers/nephews/dad/mom =), Insha'Allah if I have children I want to use those names I've listed.

love the name Maryam !
Have you notice the trend, Sana, Maria, Safa, Aaliyah, not saying there is anything wrong with these names, but so very modern... common amongst young mothers (well in Uk anyway)

True, even Zara. It's like any name that they can pass off as a fusion between the 2, which means their kids don't get bullied. Sad but true when you speak to these people.

I wonder how much one's love of a name has to do with one's experiences with wonderful people that have the name! And likewise, one's (perhaps) dislike of a name being based on maybe negative experiences? That's why I always think it's important for Muslims to always be good examples even to non-Muslims because the worst thing is for one's only association with the name 'Ahmed' or 'Maryam'' with 'that person who..."!

If I would have a baby boy I would really like Bilal or Hamza or Umar
When I asked my husband he told me Sami for a boy
Mnn..I prefere the “stronger“names. When you hear for example the name Bilal, you remember the person, I think. So thats nice.

what is the actual meaning of Khadija, who was first wife of our prophet(sawa).
I've read that it means 'premature child' but I'm not too sure. Perhaps Khadija (RA) was born earlier than expected?

khalid bin waleed
salahuddin ayubi
abdullah azzam
and for girls
safiyah ( the one - in fazail email- it says she kills a jew)
I dont' think you can name anyone 'khalid bin waleed' , 'coz the word 'bin' means 'son of' , so khalid bin waleed means khalid, the son of waleed, unless and until the father's name is also waleed... (ibn and bin mean 'son of' , 'bint' means daughter of, for your info)
