Assalaamu'alaikum,

I feel like I am hitting a bit of a brick wall in my memorisation. I am just starting out but have now got to the stage where I am getting confused between surahs because of similarities with repetition of certain phrases. Any advice on the best ways to overcome this?

jazakumallah khairun

Mabrook! u will be hafizah soon Inshallah with Allah's help. i think there are memorisation techniqes. u can read this thread 'She became Hafiz in 53 days!' this thread is amazing. check if it might be helpful to u. Inshallah some other users might also give u very helpful advice. Recently there was another similar thread regarding hifz. "Help Me In this Case" u can check this too.

:salam: Sister;

I'm just starting out as well and have begun experiencing something similar.
I don't have much help as I'm still working on it myself. The only thing that is working for me(somewhat) is to just pay attention to and acknowledge the similarities in the 2 verses and then focus on what is different and practice them.

So far my mistake has been in trying to add the verse of the newer Surah to the verse of the older Surah that I've memorized. I just go back and look at it to make sure to identify what the difference is of the older Surah and so far :alhamd: it's working but I don't know if it will be harder once I learn more.

I'm also just trusting in the Words of Allah :taala: :

:bism:
وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا الۡقُرۡاٰنَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِنۡ مُّدَّكِرٍ‏

"And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth? " 54:17

May Allah :taala: help you to complete your hifz quickly and easily and never allow you to forget any of it sister. Ameen. :)

As'Salam Alaikum,

My children were having same problem. Here is things we do.

1. Each child uses his/her own mushaf only.

2. Once a sabaq has been made pakka (memorized well), and a mistake creeps in then that mistake word(s) is highlited by a yellow marker. Then the child takes a line or two above it and a line below it and rememorizes it.

3. From then on when ever the child is doing review, and comes across a highlited portion, he reviews that portion 3-5 times.

4. After this, if the mistakes EVER creeps back AGAIN, then we make a red border around that yellow highlight area. Then it is treated as a very serious matter. Further memorization is stopped and all energy is concentrated on this part until the mistake is gone. The child is frequently re-tested on those parts.

Hope it helps

:jazak: for a great tip! Do you make those marks straight on the Mushaf or separate printed pages?

Salam

Wa Iyyak,

We mark the words directly on the mushaf, that way they see their shortcommings whenever they are reviewing. Loose papers might get lost, the child might forget to look at them etc... buut if the words are marked on the mushaf, they will always stand out until the child changes mushaf.

Also another important thing, is daily revisions. These are two types:

1. Reciting to teacher: The process we do is: the child does a fast review of a rub3a ( two rub3ar for older child) by looking at the mushaf and also pointing with the finger. This is called rikz. Remember rikz is not full reading, it is sort of a fast murmer beneath the breath. A child can rikz a rub3a in about 10 min or less. If the child encounters a high-lighted word then he must review the ayat 3 times. After rikz, he comes and recites to the teacher from memory. Then goes on and does the same for the next rub3a.

Everyday they must do approx 1/6 of the amount they have already memorized. This way all of whatever they have memorized so-far is reviewed every week. Example if they have already memorized 24 rub3a, (24 quarters or equivalent of 6 juz) then they must rikz and recite 3 to 4 rub3a (quarters) every day.

2. Special attention to newest 8 quarters they have memorized because this may still have weakness. May be review it in this mid week as well.

Was'Salam
