Veysel Karani (Uwaysal Qarani)
by Yunus Emre
Urum'da Acem'de a,sïk oldugum
Yemen ellerinde Veysel Karani
Allah'ïn habibi dostum dedigim
Yemen ellerinde Veysel Karani
In Byzantium, in Persia, I have been a wandering minstrel of love.
In the land of Yemen——Uways al-Qarani.
I have said, the beloved of Allah is my friend.
In the land of Yemen——Uways al-Qarani.
Anasïndan destur aldï durmadï
Kabe yollarïnï geçti boyladï
Geldi ol Resul'u evde bulmadï
Yemen ellerinde Veysel Karani
He took permission from his mother; he felt bound to do so.
He traversed the roads going to the Ka`bah.
He came to the Prophet's house, but didn't find him there.
In the land of Yemen——Uways al-Qarani.
Peygamber mescitten evine geldi
Veys'in nurunu kapïda gördü
Sordu Fatima'ya "eve kim geldi"
Yemen ellerinde Veysel Karani
The Prophet came home from the mosque;
He saw Uways's light at the door.
He asked Fatimah, "Who came to the house?"
In the land of Yemen——Uways al-Qarani.
Yunus eydür "gelin biz de varalïm"
Ayagï tozuna yüzler sürelim
Hak nasib eylesin kom,su olalïm
Yemen ellerinde Veysel Karani
Come now, Yunus, and let's be there!
Let's rub the dust of his feet on our faces.
May God give us the good fortune to be his neighbors.
In the land of Yemen——Uways al-Qarani.
(The story goes that Uways al-Qarani embraced Islam in Yemen, and greatly desired to travel to Medina to meet Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. But his old mother wanted him to stay home and take care of her. She gave him permission to go on the condition that as soon as he got to the Prophet's house, he would turn around and come RIGHT BACK without going anyplace else. As the song tells, the Prophet happened to be out when he reached there. But Uways was obedient to the promise he'd made to his mother, so he never did get to meet the Prophet. For his love for the Prophet and his filial piety, he was raised to the same spiritual station as the Sahabah, the Prophet's Companions. The concept is that he received his initiation into sainthood in a purely spiritual way, without a face-to-face meeting. Our beloved prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) requested from Omer (may Allah be pleased with him) to give his jacket to Uways al Qarani.

As salaamu alaikum!
I really like this composition, as it reminds me of the long Hadith narrated about the incidence. But I thought Uways Al-Qarni was a Tab'i, not a Sahabiy? How comes did he visit the Prophet's house in Madina, when he was not alive then, during the lifetime of the Prophet, as narrated in the poem above?
I need more clarifications on this please.

The Prophet came home from the mosque;
He saw Uways's light at the door.
He asked Fatimah, "Who came to the house?"
In the land of Yemen——Uways al-Qarani
as you can see from the words. Our prophet Muhammed (s.a.w) was alive when uways went to visit him. Unfortunately he couldnt see our beloved Muhammed (s.a.w).
Our beloved prophet requested from Omar to give his jacket to uways after his death or before.

Heres a bit more about him :
Hazrat Khwaja Uways al-Qarani (RA) denied this world to himself so much that people took him as a mad man. his food consisted of only a few dates, which he picked on his way and saved for breaking the fast. if he found more dates than he required, he gave the ripe ones away in charity. as night approached, he distributed in charity all things he had in his household.
the young boys took him as an insane person, teased him and threw stones at him. at this he said: "Please children! hit me with only small pebbles so that i do not bleed and miss my daily prayers and fast."
Regarding him, the prophet(SAW) said:
"i receive the breeze of mercy from the direction of Yemen."
"The most superior man amongst the Tabi'un is Uways (RA)".
It was Hazrat A'isha (RA) who answered the door when Hazrat Uways (RA) came to the Prophet's(SAW) house, telling him that He(SAW) was out. Soon after he had left, the Prophet(SAW) returned home and Hazrat A'isha(RA) told Him(SAW) that Uways(RA) had come from Qaran.
The prophet(SAW) asked a'isha(RA): "did u see him?"
she replied: "yes"
At this the prophet(SAW) gathered his companions and asked them to look at his blessed face. he then said: "A'isha(RA) has seen Uways(RA), and therefore she has been forgiven. As i see A'isha(RA) i have been forgiven. And you have seen me. therefore, you are all forgiven."
Injury to the Holy Prophet's(SAW) teeth
At the time when two of the holy prophet's(SAW) teeth became sacrificed, Hazrat Uways (RA) was tending to his brother's camels in the woods of Qaran. when he came to know of this incident, he broke one of his teeth first. it then occurred to him that it may not have been the same tooth that had broken. so he broke another and another and another until he had broken them all. This is the love he had for the prophet (SAW). Another thing to consider is that how did he come to find out about the incident when he was alone in the woods?
Hazrat Uways's (RA) visit to Madina
After the death of his mother, Hazrat uways(RA) once visited Madina.
The companions of the prophet(SAW) asked him: "why did you not come along in the life time of the Holy Prophet(SAW)?"
He replied: "My mother has been sick and advanced in her age. for the sake of my attendance to her she could not allow me to go far away".
The companions beseeched: "we all sacrificed our parents, relatives and wealth all for the prophet(SAW). why could you not leave your mother alone?"
At this Hazrat Uways (RA) got excited saying: "Well! You are the companions of the prophet(SAW). explain to me his appearance, the beauty and perfection."
The companions narrated some of the signs on his sacred body and his miracles.
Hazrat uways(RA) said: "i did not mean to know the signs of the apparent life, rather, i meant to know the description of his beauty of the inward."
The companions said:"we have told you what we had known. should you give any pointers, please do so!"
At this Hazrat Uways(RA) went in to a trance and described the prophet's(SAW) appearance, characteristics, the beauty and the perfection in the most befitting manner that the companions lost control of themselves and got enraptured thus experiencing absorption and ecstasy, falling on the ground totally tired. as soon as they regained somewhat consciousness, they kissed at hazrat Uways's(RA) head in extreme joy.
The blessed cloak of the Prophet(SAW)
It was the Prophet’s(SAW) wish that his sacred cloak be given to Uways(RA) after he passes away, and that he prays for the forgiveness of his Ummah. In fulfilment of the prophet’s(SAW) command, hazrat umar (RA) and hazrat ali (RA) went to find him. And according to one of the traditions, hazrat bilal (RA) went with them. After much difficulty, they were told of his whereabouts. Hazrat Bilal (RA) saw him and when he offered his greetings, he heard the word “Hu!” uttered off Hazrat Uways’s(RA) tongue. At this Hazrat Bilal (RA) went into a rapture and fell down on the ground unconscious. Hazrat Ali(RA) recited some verses of the holy qur’an, thus bringing him back to consciousness. When asked as to what happened, he told the story of his state saying: “Surely he is Uways (RA) whom we have come to see.”
In another narration, when Hazrat Ali(RA) and Hazrat Umar(RA) find Hazrat Uways(RA), they tell him that the prophet(SAW) has ordered them to pass on his greetings and to request him to pray for the forgiveness of the ummah. He replied to the companions: “indeed you are worthier than I am for this supplication!”
The exalted companions remarked: “We certainly supplicate. Please you pray as per the will of Prophet(SAW).
Having received the blessed cloak, he placed it on the ground and prostrating, beseeched: ”O Allah! I shall not wear this honourable cloak until you have forgiven the ummah of the Prophet (SAW).”
He took so long in his prostration, that it occurred to the companions that he may have passed away. When they reached near him, he raised his head from prostration and said: “Had you not come here, I would not have raised my head from prostration until I had glad tidings of the forgiveness of the whole ummah. Even then Allah the almighty has promised to forgive as many sinners of the Ummah of the Prophet(SAW) as the number of the hair of the sheep flocks of the tribes of Rabi’a and Mudar.”
