yes though i signed up before it was launched. :D
it officially opened at 12:01 am EST.
I think I'll take the Ihya course by Sh. Nuh :insh: though studying hanafi fiqh is really tempting.
What have all of you registered for?
And I've been wondering whether we will focus on english translations or at least read the originals alongside -- one notice says that sunnipath offers "distance education courses, in English and in (the future) Arabic," but I couldn't find an answer on the site about reading along in the original language. (as an option for those of us who can). Anyone know?

all 6... though i think i'll be taking only 5 out of them as the 2nd hanafi class requires the 1st one completed before taking it on, so we'll see insha'Allah.
:D im looking forward to taking the classes though, more time focused on really increasing the deen..and which will make it less time on here.. which will make ppl a lot more happy...

if you take hanafi fiqh you might get confused as you're shafi. a lot of the things are different, my husband is shafi and im hanafi and he gets like oh wow when he reads stuff thats in hanafi yet not in shafi.'i
I'll find out for you regarding the distance education courses, insha'Allah i'll try to post it later on tonight insha'Allah...

Looks intriguing. May sign up for the ihya class if I have the time - I apparently have some very strange ideas having read it all by my lonesome. Where's that psycho smiley at?..
As an aside the redesign isn't quite right on Mozilla firebird. Doh.

1. Courses will have teacher reciting some of the Matn in Arabic.
But the course is taught in English as a Medium. All the courses will be taught in English, though they might mention some of the texts in Arabic.
The Ihya, specifically, has a special emphasis on unpacking the Arabic terms used by imam al ghazali.
This is what was told to me by my husband who is on the SP staff. Though as the others have mentioned you will probably hear about it if you're on the hanafi or shafii yahoo group. Though if you did sign up for them, you will get an email explaining all of this and what to do and where to go insha'Allah.
and if anyone has any ?s regarding the classes can email SP for it.
mashallah!
agh you make me want to drop organic chemistry and learn at home all day long =)
If the seekers of knowledge program begins before I graduate, I might have to drop out of school..
I hear you about the shafi`i / hanafi differences...
I originally chose to follow imam shafi`i because of the utility of Sh Keller's english translation of _`Umdat as Salik_ , which is an amazing and inspired resource.
But I'm nearly equally informed in hanafi fiqh because my closest friends are hanafi (deshi or turkish). I'm torn, honestly. One difference of hanafi fiqh in particular, the permissibility of a woman entering into a marriage contract without a wali, makes sense for my situation. And the variety and quality of hanafi resources available in america are really unmatched by other madhahib. We'll see inshallah.. for now I'll stick to the Ihya.
now ukhti I expect you to keep the sisters' threads updated on your studies, so don't plan to neglect sunniforum -too- much. ;]
Thanks so much for the info about language of instruction.

I wonder if someone could clear up some things for me related to the sunnipath courses (UmmII you seem to be in a good position to do that, masha Allah!).
- There are pilot courses, starting this month...?
- And then the real thing starts in Sept?
- Are the lessons pre-recorded and downloadable? Or is it a live pal-talk type arrangement?
I have massive exams coming up at the end of Sept, but I'd really love to be able to do this, and if the lessons are live i'd miss out on a whole two weeks! Augh!
If someone could enlighten me, I'd be most grateful. Jazakallah.

a board will be set up for asking questions to the teachers for the classes, and a chat room for that purpose only.
And you listen to them on your own at your own time, plus you get a free notepad to be able to take your own notes. Insha'Allah if you signed up, you should be receiving an email within this week or next week with all the information insha'Allah.
though if you do have any ?s regarding the classes you can email SP about it at info@sunnipath.com

Yes pilot courses are available later on this month but it's only for the people that signed up for the course at the Suhba in Buffalo. The real courses will be available for everyone in Sept 17, 2004.
They are pre-corded and downloadable, and not live pal-talk yet.
Insha'Allah if you signed up you should be receiving an email within this week about your course(s) and what to do and all. If you do have any questions regarding this you can email SP at info@sunnipath.com.
assalamu alaikum Umm,
Your advice has been really helpful, :jazak:. I have 2 more questions -- Do you have any idea of how many recorded hours of instruction there will be per course? I'm trying to see how many I can fit in around school and work.
And do you expect that it would be necessary to listen during the weekdays, or could a weekend listener keep up with the classes? (I would take Ihya and Essentials of Hanafi Fiqh)

I'm in exactly the same situation... would like to take Essentials of Hanafi Fiqh and the course on Ihya, but need to work around university. Sidi Faraz said they're still finalising when the live teacher sessions will be, in-order to allow as many people to participate as possible.

I just talked to someone high up in SunniPath. He told me:
1. All courses are pre-recorded with streaming Notes (key point from the lectures)
2. Some of the courses will have Live Q&A session with Teachers
3. There will be discussion forum for Students
4. Teaching Assistants will help students around the clock
5. A quick Q&A service for most courses
6. Sheikh Nuh will take complex questions weekly (but not online). They will be availble for students to listen.
7. The courses are not downloadable.
8. Some courses also needs Arabic Font support to view the Arabic notes
9. There is no pre-requisite for any courses offered this semester
10. Anyone registers for any course before September 17th will be autometically enrolled for Pilot courses.
11. Students will most likely get access to course materials day or 2 before the August 15th.
He mentioned few other things, don't remember all of them.

Online Academy
The Sunni Path Academy (SP Academy) provides distance education courses, in English and in (the future) Arabic, for anyone who wants to further their knowledge in Islam, or study for personal development. Our aim is to provide a means of education for people who may not have personal access to scholars in their own communities.
The SP Academy is a welcome addition to www.SunniPath.com. The Academy's vast educational offering is made of Essential Knowledge courses that enable students to complete their "necessary knowledge" (fard 'ayn) without having to travel overseas.
As your lifelong learning partner, Sunni Path's commitment is to make education and personal development accessible to anyone, anywhere, any time. The Academy fulfills this commitment by providing independent learning opportunities that are as close as your computer.
As well as Essential Knowledge courses, the Academy plans to offer a Seekers of Knowledge Series, which are slightly more advanced classes for students already familiar to the Islamic Sacred Sciences.
Online Learning
At the Sunni Path Academy, we understand the limitations of the technology we are using. It is not possible to fully recreate the traditional circle of knowledge (halaqa) online.
When sitting with a teacher, one benefits from their knowledge and their state, their propriety (adab) and their character.
We have tried to capture this as much as possible through
Audio lessons;
Streaming outline notes;
The facility to ask questions related to the material;
Weekly online sessions with teachers; and
Related texts and recommended readings.
When we consulted major scholars regarding online Islamic learning, they concurred that,
“This is something absolutely necessary. There will be tremendous benefit in it.” (Shaykh Adib Salih)
Those of sincerity, in all ages, have transcended the boundaries of distance, in their thirst for beneficial knowledge. We believe that those who seek this knowledge with sincerity, out of a desire to draw closer to Allah by acting on what they learn will find great benefit.
As Imam Zarnuji states in Instruction of the Student, the purpose of study is to
“…strive for the pleasure of God, the abode of the Hereafter, the removal of ignorance from oneself and from the rest of the ignorant, and revival of religion, and the survival of Islam.” (Zarnuji, p. 5)
Acquiring Knowledge
The Companion of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), Mu`adh ibn Jabal (Allah be pleased with him) said,
“Acquire knowledge because doing so is good. Seeking it is worship. Reviewing it is glorifying Allah. Researching it is jihad. Teaching it to the ignorant is charity.
“Serving the scholars is a way of drawing near to Allah because knowledge is the path of ascension to the stations of Paradise . It is a companion in isolation and a comrade in distant lands. It speaks to you in solitude. It is a guide to prosperity and a shield against adversity. It beautifies one among friends and is a weapon against enemies. With it Allah elevates people and makes them guides and bellwethers of good.
“The scholars are people whose words are sought and whose actions are imitated. The angels long for the scholar's company and comfort them with their wings. Everything, the fish of the sea, the beasts of the earth, the predators of the land and sea, and the cattle pray that blessings come upon him.
“This is because knowledge enlivens the heart against ignorance, illuminates the eyes against darkness, and strengthens the body. It transports the servants to the mansions of the select and the righteous and to the highest ranks in the world and in the Hereafter. Contemplating it is equivalent to fasting, and reviewing it is equivalent to the Night Prayer vigil. With it, kinship is united and the lawful is distinguished from the unlawful. Knowledge is an imam which leads to righteous actions. It is craved by the people destined for Paradise and shunned by people destined for Hell.”

Sunni Path Academy
How are the Online Courses run?
http://www.SunniPath.com/school
Assalamu `alaikum.
Welcome to the Sunni Path Academy’s Fall 2004 Session.
At the heart of the Sunni Path Academy are recorded streaming classes. The student listens to these classes, along with the streaming notes, texts, and (where relevant) diagrams that appear on the screen.
Students are encouraged to take notes—an electronic journal is provided to help them keep their notes organized, though pen and paper will do. There are self-study questions (with answers) for each class. Assignments, related readings and other materials are provided for students to complete their understanding of the topics covered.
When anything in a lesson is unclear, the student can submit a question through the e-mail service for course-related questions, or raise the question for moderated discussion in the online course forum, where course-related discussions will take place.
Also available in the Online Academy:
1) Detailed information about the Academy, its programs, curriculum, goals, and educational methodology,
2) biographies of our teachers,
3) information on the importance of Sacred Knowledge,
4) self-study tips.
As a bonus, students who register before August 15th can participate in the early ‘pilot phase’ of the course they have registered in.
There are no prerequisites for courses offered this semester. In coming semesters, some classes may require prerequisite knowledge.
Students can take as many classes as they can manage.
For a complete listing of courses being offered, please visit the Sunni Path Academy page: http://www.SunniPath.com
And Allah alone gives success, and all praise belongs to Allah.
Massalam

:salam:
awesome, I got a response to my inquiry about time constraints. This is great advice, alhamdulillah.
<< I certainly would not advise you to take all the classes
(given your work and study)... at most take 2 -3 classes,
so that you can see 1) how long it takes *you* to work
through the material and 2) if you like the courses and format
we have chosen for them (insha Allah you will, but there's
always a possibility that you may not)
We have tried to make these courses as flexible as possible,
for the students to be able to work through the material
at their own paces.
I think the minimum time needed for each class (the larger classes)
is 2 hours a week minimum. (There is no mandatory amount
of time per class, other than for the student to listen to all lessons)
The Self Study Drills and assignments are optional
(i.e. no grade is given), and were designed for the
students own benefit for the student to assess
their own comprehension level.
Remember you have to complete all course material
by December 15th. So think about it, and what you want to do.
Also, many of these same courses may be offered for our
winter session as well - so you do have the opportunity to take more
classes at a later time.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to email me.
We hope you enjoy your learning experience at sunnipath.com

Skills for Success as a Student
Success as a student only comes if one assesses what they are bringing to the learning experience. As a student, you must be aware of not only your study skills, but the presumed philosophies about education, the teacher-student relationship, on line learning, traditional learning and your history as a student/learner.
Many of us find that public schooling has left us without understanding of what ‘education’ truly is.
Our natural love of learning, which Allah placed in our fitra as human beings, has been covered up. It is important to understand that the experience of education is different than schooling, and one must rid oneself of the negative impact public education has had on us. A good reading for this is John Taylor Gatto’s “7-lesson School Teacher” which can be found at http://www.worldtrans.org/whole/schoolteacher.txt
In drawing nearer to Allah, we draw nearer to our fitra, and our love of learning.
Traditional Knowledge
In deciding to become a student with Sunnipath Academy, you have taken the initiative to learn the traditional knowledge presented here. As the student, you are responsible for completing the readings, doing necessary research, asking questions and keeping an open line of communication with your teachers.
There are neither grades nor any responsibilities to any of the staff or teachers. As Imam Zarnuji states in Instruction of the Student, the purpose of study is to
“…strive for the pleasure of God, the abode of the Hereafter, the removal of ignorance from himself and from the rest of the ignorant, and revival of religion, and the survival of Islam.” (Zarnuji, p. 5)
We at SunniPath Academy highly recommend that you read Imam Al-Zarnuji’s book in its entirety.
UmmIbrahimIsa

Assalamu alaikum wr wb
source: http://www.sunnipath.com
As a starting point, here are a few of the methods of learning Imam Al-Zarnuji recommends to students. Each point is expounded upon in great detail in the book:
• Pure intention, sincerity, and high resolve
• Seeking Allah’s assistance, through earnest supplication. Among the Qur’anic supplications for seeking knowledge is, “O Lord, increase me in knowledge.” [Rabbi zidni `ilma]
• Respecting knowledge and those who have it, for the sake of Allah.
• Earnestness, perseverance and diligence in the pursuit of learning
• Being organized and not overwhelming oneself—rather, to strive for consistency.
• Relying on Allah entirely.
• Choosing the best times for study, which are those went one’s mind is clear and one does not have other distractions—such as dawn and late evening.
• Take notes, in all lessons you attend, and of all beneficial knowledge you hear or read. In this way your knowledge will be firm. If you try to just memorize, it will flee.
• Be wary of what you eat, that it is pure and not contaminated, both physically and spiritually.
• Be wary of falling into idleness, excessive sleep, or wasting time through idle talk.
• Sit facing the Qibla, whenever possible.
How to increase memory
Memorizing and retaining knowledge is a skill. Like other skills, it takes practice to perfect. The following are some of the recommendations of scholars:
• Be industrious and committed
• Be patient, repeat what you are trying to memorize, and then review it regularly
• Try to memorize when you mind is clear of concerns
• Reduce your eating
• Increase night prayer
• Read Quran
• Send blessings on the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace)
• Use a siwak

a lot of ppl say that they can't login for some reason and I find that perhaps they are missing seeing the my courses link.
Follow these steps and insha'Allah it should work.
1. Go to the main site, and to the left hand side you'll see where it says members and password. Click in the members and login your login name just your name is necessary (like the beginning of your email), you dont need the @sunnipath.com then click in your password.
2. After that it will say welcome so and so, and then it will say either a link to check email, or a link to my courses, or a link to my account. Click on my courses.
3. Then a new page will open up within that window of the courses you are taking, talking about the courses like what it is and who's teaching it.
Click on the course you wish to start on, 'Essentials of Hanafi Fiqh', or 'Marriage classes' or 'Ihya Uloom Deen. Imam al Ghazali'
Then a new page will open up within that course detailing the course materials, resources, lessons, lecture notes, assignments and other stuff you can read about the lessons....
CLick on what you want to hear, there's also a Forum discussion board like this one...but that is related just to the lessons you're being taught...
you can also meet your classmates by clicking on meet your classmates and introducing yourself. you'll find my intro at the very bottom of each my classmates...lol....
if you still seem to be having problems you can always email at academy@sunnipath.com for more ?s on academy related stuff, yet if its regarding your payment try payment@sunnipath.com and if its technical related try imran@sunnipath.com or gtotten@sunnipath.com <- thats my hubby's email and they'll get back to you as soon as possible.. though i'll make it a point to them to get back to you quicker as you're waiting to take the courses...lol...
hope that helps...
:salam:
Thanks so much for the advice Umm. I've been doing what you said though -- each time I click the course link an error message is returned: "Login here using your username and password:(Cookies must be enabled in your browser) Invalid login, please try again ". Logging into Sunnipath itself isn't a problem, but getting into the courses hasn't worked at all. I have disabled cookies. So, I'm just waiting for a response to my help request.
Actually I'll email your ahl too, so poke him about enabling the account of a certain user asmasaloom =)
p.s. look at that sad face! it is definitely reflective of me, but I didn't put it in. The error message has a colon and open parentheses. lol

I did mention it to my husband when he came in and i think he told me either him or another bro fixed the prob... so alhamdulillah thats good to see that you're in...
:salam:
yeah alhamdulillah =))
I really like the format, they've done a nice job designing the lectures & scrolling notes :mash:
So far the Ihya course is starting slowly with the introductory lectures -- I haven't gotten beyond those. But I really look forward to the recordings about the need for fuquha, about imam Shafi`i and Hanafi, the limits of fiqh, the need for a separate science of the heart...
I've decided I'm also going to take the marriage course as time-management will not be too much of an issue :insh: because of the constant availability of the lectures (I say this at the begininning of my semester, so we'll see about that). And possibly the course in `Aqeedah. So we'll have lots to keep up about.
One question: How elementary is the _Absolute Essentials_ course? As a Hanafi-from-birth, are you gaining quite a new perspective or is it relatively basic?
take care, was-salam

well sis im in the same boat as you, i've just completed the marriage class :) finished all the lessons within a week... and quizzes.. just have to do the optional assignments though they told me not to rush it as its optional and not due until dec though i dont want to get overburden too much by dec, as im taking all 6 of them....
my next class to take is the hanafi essentials of fiqh, as in 3 weeks or so when the next set opens up im to take the 2nd part of essentials of hanafi fiqh, and its required to have the 1st course completed before taking the 2nd one, so i have to complete this one first, then i could start taking shaykh nuh's class of ihya uloom deen imam al ghazali class as well as the 3 others of other fiqh class, aqidah class and 77 branches of faith.... subhan'Allah what was i thinking when i signed up...? ahh yes i know... all the interesting courses and lots of free time... more time spent in this to benefit rather than wasting it....alhamdulillah.
i'll let you know though how it is after a few days of me taking it.... and the marriage class is just basics.... your rights, his rights, responsibilities, so it should be fine insha'Allah.
