View Full Version : Praying Hanafi timings in Shafii country?
Salam Alaikum,
If I am a Hanafi, and I moved to a Shafii country, should I be using the Hanafi Asr method? Isn't it preferable for me to be following the local prayer timings and adhaan? I was praying according to the local timings and following local adhaan until someone told me that I should be following Hanafi timings. Now I am confused.
JazakAllah Khair in advance.

if you are only there for a temporary period, it will be best to keep to your Hanafi timings, however if your there permanantly then it might be advisable to switch to the Shafi madhab to assimilate with everyone else but do get some scholarly verification for this
in the meantime, while your not certain wether you should switch to shafi timings or not, keep to the Hanafi one, however if you see you are going to miss a jamaat being prayed in the shafi time [and otherwise your going to pray singly in the Hanafi time] then you should catch jamaat in the shafi time

Why should she change madhab when there is a valid opinion in the Hanafi madhab that agrees with the jamhur on the prayer times? Abu Yusuf and Muhammad al-Shaybani both agreed with the earlier time (as did Malik, al-Shafi'i and Ahmad).
I would follow the time with the Shafi'is for now without changing madhab, just follow the other opinion in the Hanafi madhab, although it is not the mu'tamad. I am not entirely sure how the Hanafi madhab is structured in terms of following marjuhat, but in our madhab we can follow them in our personal practice. And Allah knows best.

Exactly... :-(
I was praying according to local timings, but then somebody close to me told me to switch to Hanafi Asr Method.

JazakAllah Khairan, for the above information!
Btw, I wanted to add that I asked a well-known scholar from Al-Azhar who is Maliki, (told him I was "Hanafi") and he also suggested that it would be better to follow local prayer timings. [I am double-checking because the person who told me this didn't seem to think I should be asking a Maliki scholar]

I'm aware that there is a minority opinion within the Hanafi maddhab to pray at Shafi'i time. However, is it permissible to follow this opinion when living in a Shafi'i country?

...is it more important to pray according to Hanafi time or to pray in a jamaat? If you're in a Shafi'i country, everyone will be praying at the Shafi'i time, so what reason could you possibly have for missing jamaat every 'asr?

Definitely, it's more important to pray in jama`ah. In the Hanafi maddhab, as long as the Imam's salaah is valid, the muqtadi's salaah is also valid - therefore a Hanafi can pray behind Shafi'is, etc.
However, this question refers to when praying individually. Jazakallahu khairan for the clarification.

If you're praying in jamaat amongst the Shafi'is, then follow local timings. If you're praying by yourself or in jamaat made up of Hanafis - including the imam - then pray according to the Hanafis.
Also, since you're a sister and most probably praying alone, it is best to pray in accordance with the Hanafi timings, not the Shafi'i timings.
The Hanafi madhhab is a lot stricter than the Shafi'i madhhab in following the majority opinion of the madhhab and leaving minority opinions.
