Hadith about Ten Percent of Deen?

May Allah forgive me if I have butchered even the meaning of this hadith, but I am trying to recall a hadith that I had heard a couple times. It involves RasulAllah (s) saying that there will come a time when the Ummah will have to follow ten percent of this Deen in order to enter into Jannah. Have you heard of this hadith. I am curious to finding the source of it.

This is the last paragraph in the chapter titled Khaybar of Martin Lings’ book Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources (2nd Ed.):


It was his wont to warn them continually that the privilege of living with him in his community brought with it a grave responsibility, for God was just and would judge them more severely than those who lived in worse ages when it was more difficult to resist evil. He said: “Verily ye are in an age when whoso omitteth one tenth of the law shall be doomed. But there will come an age when whoso fulfilleth one tenth of the law shall be saved.” (Tirmidhi XXXI, 79)

but 10% of the effort of Deen. Allahu-aálam...

Abu Huraiyra radiaAllahu anhu reported Allah's Messenger Sal Alllahu alaihi wasallam saying: (You are living) in a blessed age that he who abandons even 1/10 of what he is prescribed, courts destruction, after this there will come a time when he who observes 1/10 of what is now prescribed will be saved." The hadith clearly does not refer to Fard or wajib acs of worship, as one who leaves them out courts destruction, regardless of the age he lives in.

The hadith applies to the responsibility of inviting towards good and forbidding from evil.
Due to the strong levels of Iman and the conducive dini enviroment of the time of the Sahabah , had they neglected even part of this responsibility, they would have been destroyed.

On the other hand, in times of evil and misconduct, fulfilling a portion of this responsibility would be sufficient to save one.

If I am not mistaken, similar commentary is mentioned in al-Mirqat of Mulla Ali al-Qari.
