View Full Version : Beard - Sunnah or Wajib?
http://www.muftisays.com/blog/Seifeddine-M/1619_29-05-2011/1%29-the-beard-.-sunnah-or-wajib%3F.html
I read this, and now im kind of confused.
The sheikh says that it is Wajib to keep a beard, while I thought it was a sunnah.
Did he mean that if your planning on keeping a beard, it should be long, at least a fist-full?
What if you're not planning on keeping a beard, ever. Will you be sinful?

From what I understand (not a scholar), all 4 schools of thought agree that it is sinful for a man to clean-shave his face. The only difference among the madhabs is the fact that some allow trimming it a bit and some say at least a fist-length is mandatory... however, all madhabs forbid completely shaving off the beard. Fist length is the Hanafi ruling and is also very easily visible all over ahadith, even if a layman of extremely limited knowledge like myself goes reading translation of ahadith without reading tafseer or consulting a scholar. That's how obvious it is.
The Prophet :saw: had a full beard so much so that it filled his chest. That should be reason alone to keep a full beard. Whether it is fardh, wajib, sunnah, or nafl becomes irrelevant at this point. The Prophet :saw: didn't shave, and ordered his followers not to do it, hence we follow that order. A true lover of the Prophet :saw: will not try to find "loopholes" in the deen to "get away" from keeping a beard (not directed towards you brother, but generally speaking), rather he will do everything within his ability to implement this and other qualities of the Prophet :saw: into his own life.
Allah knows best.

It is from the sunnah of Rasulullah :saw: to keep a shar'i beard (fist-length minimum, not the 3 days unshaven face) and is wajib according to fiqh terminology.
