Jamia Binoria. SubhanAllah, what a place it was. In the corner of SITE, and industrial city, was this institute at which 3000 students were studying the deen of Islaam. Of those 7 short months i spent there, that was where I was able to be in the company of the 'ulamaa, and the saaliheen, of the sort which I have never seen. That was where by the will of Allah i was able to make a major change in my life. That was the place that was radiant with noor, and a place I long to return to...

And subhanAllah, that was (no in ruins) where me and my roommates used to come to drink chai after 'asr salaah. I would come with my roommate Shaykh Tameem who would always give me the best of advices and encourage me to be steadfast in this deen and not to be overcome by the mischief of those people who believe they were calling to right but were in reality calling to something baatil. May Allah grant him and my other teacher (who was in that particular area 10 minutes before the event) who are both studying there at this time protection and steadfastness.

The story...

Dozens of people were hurt in the blasts outside an Islamic religious school in the west of the city.

The attacks came a day after two people died in a bombing outside a car rental office in the port, but it is not known if they are connected.

Karachi has been hit by several bomb attacks in recent months.

Previous attacks blamed on Islamist militants have often targeted foreigners, Christians or Shia Muslims.

But the latest blasts went off outside a Shia Muslim school, called Jamia Binori.

Motorbike

Senior police officials said it was a highly-planned and co-ordinated attack in which two explosive devices were used to hit as many people as possible.

First there was a small explosion outside the school at about 1910 local time (1410 GMT). Then as most of the people sitting inside the school's roadside restaurant came out, a more powerful blast went off.

The second bomb was fitted in a motorbike parked outside the restaurant, a senior police official said.

Doctors at one of two hospitals treating the injured said 11 people were in a critical condition.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack. Officials said it was too early to say whether it was part of the ongoing rivalry between Shia and Sunni extremists.

Drive-by shooting

Police and paramilitary troops set up a cordon around the site of the explosions.

The school has had problems with sectarian violence in the past.

In May, its leader, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai - a prominent supporter of Afghanistan's former Taleban regime - was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Thousands of his supporters rioted following his death.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city with 14 million inhabitants.

(corrections: its a sunni school, not shia, and mufti nizamudden (rahimahullaah) was not its leader, rather he was one of the main teachers at Binori Town, a separate institute)

Of those 8 people, I knew one person. Others included a 3 year old child, and a student of daur-e-hadith (meaning he had a few months left to finish). May Allah bless them all with shahaadah.

It brings to mind this poem (translated):

Which of the wounds,
Will penetrate the hearts of the noble ones,

Which of the waves,
From the ocean of disgrace will again crash unnoticed,

Which of the sorrows,
No, but which of the tears in the eyes of the oppressed,
Which of the hardships will wake us up?

...Verily the life we are living is nothing but disgrace,
We are satisfied with even though the ending is approaching.

...Oh people of history, inform us about those people,
About that time wherein the consciences were not dead.

"Thauban reported that the messenger of Allah said: "It is near that the nations will call one another against you just as the eaters call one another to their dishes." Somebody asked: "Is this because we will be few in numbers that day?" He said: "Nay, but that day you shall be numerous, but you will be (in strength) like the bubbles of the sea, and Allah will take the fear of you away from your enemies and will place weakness into your hearts." Somebody asked: "What is this weakness?" He said: "The love of the world and the dislike of death." (Abu Dawud)"

The third attack in karachi on our 'ulamaa within a few months, not much has been done. We (myself especially) are a pathetic bunch i tell you.

I was discussing this with my teacher over here (faarigh from there), and he just said: forget masjids, they're targetting schools. why at a restaurant u know? when students are enjoying tea in the evening.

Allahumma dammir a'adaa ad-deen. Allahummah khudhhum akhdha azeezin muqtadir.

This is sad, of course.

However, I have a problem with you headline 'What will wake us up?' more so in a general sense than your use of it.

There is no 'waking up'. There is no cataclysmic event that will 'wake' us and we will all of a sudden become muslims devoid of heedlessness. I think the term annoys me more than anything because it implies that instead of steady, hardwork, some type of miracle event will take place and muslims will start being muslims again.

Hard, steady, diligent work will slowly, slowly open our eyes. No one is going to throw any water in our face.

That would claim that we're actually doing something. The truth is we're doing nothing; when we wake up first then we may start working hard and steadily.

The dunyaa has become a veil in front of our eyes, it has knocked us unconscious from the reality of the situations we are facing. Once we free ourselves from "wahn", then we will wake up and start actually doing something. And such an event, if one knew the enormity, can easily be that glass of water that will be thrown in our face.

Well then again, it all depends upon what one considers the solution in the first place. I don't want to turn this into an argument or a debate, so please excuse the heading of the post if you have any problems with the words used in it.

I think our people really need to wake up about the crappy security setups at the majaasid and madaaris. And people ought to move away from the site of an explosion not gather around and watch.

As sallamu alaikum

There are so many bomb scares and explosions-it's so sad! I mean, people are so desperate to kill like one or two people that they'll even strike in public killing 10 civilians-and not just any civilian-their own Muslim brothers & sisters!

Wa alaikum as sallam
