View Full Version : Masah of the neck: Before or after the wiping of the ears?

As salaamu alaykum.
I am a bit confused about when one ought to make "masah" of their neck in wudhu.
When I was reading Absolute Essentials of Islam, I came away with the impression that one ought to rub their neck AFTER making "masah" of their head but BEFORE wiping their ears. This is also inline with what I was always taught.
However, when I was reading Taleem ul Haqq, it said, quite clearly, that the rubbing of the neck should occur after the wiping of the ears.
Now my questions are:
1) Are both methods "masnoon" according to different reports within the madhab? If so, is one preferred over the other in the eyes of most authorities?
2) If one is correct and the other is incorrect, which one is the correct one?
3) If one is incorrect, what do you think explains what do you think explains why this mistaken statement was made given how elementary a matter this is?
Furthermore, when answering, please bear in mind that I understand that my wudhu would be valid either way but I am interested in knowing what the proper Sunnah or Masnoon sequence is AND if this is something that is disputed within the madhab.
Jazakallahu Khair.
Wa'salaam.

I am not sure how trying to get wudhu right is complicating things.
Furthermore, the chart that you've provided is from Taleemul Haq and I am already familiar with it so it has done nothing to clarify things.

Brother coldblooded, this is Hanafi Q/A. This section is not for discussion. Furthermore, your last post is not at all helping the brother out.

if it is Hanafi then people should recognise that hanafi is one of the more liberal schools and stop being so worried about every little thing when their are so many big things to worry about

:salam: coldblooded,
Any further posts of discussions in this section will be deleted. People come with sincerity to ask questions that bother them, not to engage in petty arguments. You may do those in the "General Islam" section.

Brother, the way I was taught seems to be in line with Ta'lim al-Haqq.
That means as per the chart given it would be between steps 8 and 9.

Respected Mufti:
Unfortunately, no, I do not have a PDF copy of Absolute Essentials of Islam. Let me type out verbatim the passages that appears to be giving me trouble:
"...9. Wipe a quarter of the head once above the ears. This is the third of the four obligatory acts of ritual ablution. It is sunnah to wipe the entire head starting from the top of the forehead, and recommended to also wipe the neck.
10. Wipe the ears (without taking new water). It is recommended to wipe the outside of the ears with the thumb, the insides with the index fingers and to insert the little fingers into the ear canal..."
The preceding is from pages 24-25 where the sunnah way of performing the wudhu, according to the Hanafi madhab, is described.
I appreciate all of your help.
May Allah reward you.
Wa'salaam.

Me too , that makes more common sense . Masah of neck before wiping of ears.

I am not educated in these matters by a long shot but I appreciate Imam abu Hanifa :anhu: on the above
I would have used the word practical instead of liberal though.
