Asalamu Alykum brothers and sisters,

I was under the understanding that we break our fast during Ramadan at sunset. That it is common practice to drink water and eat dates or something sweet before praying maghrib at sunset and then eating your meal after.

However, a friend of a friend (yeah I know it sounds funny) who is shiia, came running down the steps with the Qur'an to show her a passage saying that one should not break your fast until "nightfall". And she was saying it meant that you could not break the fast until it was completely dark outside. Well, I was reading the passages on fasting in the Qur'an and all I could find is that you should eat until the first thread of light appeared in the sky and then not break the fast until nightfall. I could not find any specific definition for nightfall-wether it was simply sunset, or if it meant it had to be completely dark.

Can anyone find any passage in the Qur'an that specifically explains this? I understand there are hadiths saying you break your fast at sunset, but I was wanting to find any specific descriptions in the Qur'an.

Thank you so much!

Asalamu Alykum and Ramadan Karim :cheesygri

Wa alaykum salam,

You can only break your fast when the Creator grants you that permission ;) He is the ultimate Owner. Rejoice! For when Iftar arrives, you have been granted permission to enjoy from the table of His bounties.

Islamically the night/next day begins at sunset. And that is the Sunnah of the Muslims.

Salam alikum

i have a question about when we stop eating in the morning. (Yes i already know that someone said we stop eating til the first thread of light)
for some reason my family thinks that we stop eating 30 mins before the first prayer even though the prayer chart looks like this:
Fajr Sunrise
6:24 7:27
6:24 7:28
we stop eating at around 6:00, so does this really mean that we can eat until at least 7:15? PLEASE HELP!

No! The times that you quote first (6:24) are the times you must have finished eating by. You families stopping 30mins before daybreak (the white thread of light) is a precautionary practice adopted by the overwhelming majority of Muslims, in order that the fast not be invalidated by erroneous times on the timetable. Wa'Llahu a`lam

Why is it that some people break their fasting when its Maghrib prayer, for example today it is 7:07 and some people have already broken their fast and it is still kind of light outside. Is this ok?

If it's maghrib time and they have broken their fast then it is okay.
