Asalamu Alykum brothers and sisters,
I was under the understanding that we break our fast during Ramadan at sunset. That it is common practice to drink water and eat dates or something sweet before praying maghrib at sunset and then eating your meal after.
However, a friend of a friend (yeah I know it sounds funny) who is shiia, came running down the steps with the Qur'an to show her a passage saying that one should not break your fast until "nightfall". And she was saying it meant that you could not break the fast until it was completely dark outside. Well, I was reading the passages on fasting in the Qur'an and all I could find is that you should eat until the first thread of light appeared in the sky and then not break the fast until nightfall. I could not find any specific definition for nightfall-wether it was simply sunset, or if it meant it had to be completely dark.
Can anyone find any passage in the Qur'an that specifically explains this? I understand there are hadiths saying you break your fast at sunset, but I was wanting to find any specific descriptions in the Qur'an.
Thank you so much!
Asalamu Alykum and Ramadan Karim :cheesygri
