Assalamu alaikum,

At the Islamic Community Center of Laurel (ICCL) there is an abbreviated evening Alim course. The entire curriculum takes about 4-6 years to complete and classes meet for two hours twice a week. The first two years focus on Arabic grammar and then you move into fiqh, usul al fiqh, hadith, usul al hadith, and tafseer. The Imam, Javaid Bhaiyat, studied at Dar ul Uloom Bury in England, so his style is definitely traditional. I attended for about 7 or 8 months. There is a heavy focus on memorizing sarf and nahu charts. And the Imam constantly drills and quizes you to keep you on your toes. I definitely recommend it. The website is www.icclmd.org.

The Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring also has a traditional Hanafi Imam as well, Adil Khan. He offers various classes there, including Arabic if I'm not mistaken. Considering his background, I would assume his teaching methodology isn't too different from Imam Javaid's. I believe he studied with Mufti Taqi Usmani, but don't quote me on that. The website is www.mccmd.org.

I stopped because I went to Jordan. Then when I came back from Jordan some things in my life changed a bit so it was difficult for me to take the time to go to the class. The times of the classes at ICCL change every year, so I'm not sure what the schedule is now.

When I came back from Jordan the Imam said I could skip a few years in the program. So anyone with a decent Arabic background could likely do the same.

Oh...as I'm sure you know, no Maliki fiqh is taught there. Alhumdulillah, there is a dearth of Hanafis in the Black community, so you are welcome any day you decide to jump ship. :) I'm lonely. :(

They are looking for a new Imam at MCC, so it doesn't seems like that will be a viable option anymore (I guess that depends on who the new Imam will be).

I'm thinking of moving to that area do you remember if the classes are for women and men and how about children.

btw I don't think I'll be doing the official hanafi thing, though I wouldn't mind learning it, I guess from an academic point of view.

Yes, the classes are for men and women. There is a screen dividing the men and women in the class, so men are women are taught together, but you can't see each other.

As for children, there is a full time school for children up to 5 years old (I believe), a full time hifz course, and other stuff as well if I'm not mistaken. The website (icclmd.org) has some of the class information, but not everything. You'd have to call and speak with someone to get more accurate idea of what is offered and when.

I didn't expect you to jump ship. I was just messing with you. :D
