Assalaamu 'alaykum and Jazaakallaahu khayran Shaykh Fusus sahib.
I assume "tasfiya" is to do with cleansing in which case yes, as I understand it, first the heart is cleansed of the filth within before beautifying. An example my respected and dear Shaykh (hafizahullah) has used is that of a derelict, dirty house. Before occupying it, it is cleansed of all the rubbish and thereafter decorated with wallpaper, carpets, furniture etc.

The following is the full post from www.shaykh.org

    Spiritual House

“When a person decides to renovate his house, he begins by removing the old furniture, stripping the old wallpaper and removing the worn-out carpets, etc.

When there is no more that can be done by himself, he will call an expert in that field (i.e. a competent builder) and seek his guidance and advice. This expert will probably visit the house before making a professional assessment.

Finally, whatever the builder advises, the owner accepts, usually without any question, for he trusts the builder’s expertise. If the owner follows the advice of the professional, he will find that his house will be renovated and redecorated precisely, quickly and easily.

Likewise, when we wish to decorate our hearts with the love of Allāh ta’ala and other spiritual qualities, we need to first remove the unwanted items from our hearts by repenting and ceasing all those sins which we are able to abstain from. Thereafter, we must consult an expert in this field about the condition of our spiritual house.

Additionally, we must further make frequent visits to him so that he may assess our spiritual condition entirely. And finally, we must carry out all the instructions which he gives to us.

Inshā’allāh, if we do this then our hearts will become decorated with praiseworthy qualities and the love of Allāh ta’ala.”

There are two parts to this:

    1 - Qalb

    What is qalb?

2 - Now we are getting into its condition, its quality, in this case the quality of "saleem"

What is salamat e qalb? How to achieve this?

Looking at an example of Ibrahim (as) we can get a glimpse at what is qalb e saleem:

Who created me, then He has shown me the way: And He Who gives me to eat and gives me to drink: And when I am sick, then He restores me to health. And He Who will cause me to die, then give me life; And Who, I hope, will forgive me my mistakes on the day of judgment.

That is a window into the world of qalb e saleem. Possibly the beginning point of this is tasfiya e qalb; without it qalb e saleem seems impossible - Ulama and Mashaikh know better.

That brought back some old memories.. a 17 yr old walking up to a shaikh of tasawwuf Hazrat Dr. Ali malpa sahab db khalifa of Hazrat maulna Shah Wasiullah sahab (rah) and Hazrat maulana Shah Abrar ul haq sahab (rah) in a quest to find a shaikh of tasawwuf.. brazenly asks him.. hazrat ive heared you seem to have an interest in tasawwuf ( ignorant of his nisbat to akabir )

The shaikh smiles and says .. may be .. so the first question this guy poses is about wujood and shuhood and the position of hazrat thanvi (rah) on the subject.. Hazrat smiles and asks him where did you learn all this.. he says through books..
the answer the shaikh gave shall remain with the noivce forever insha Allah..

said on the day of judgement Allah will not ask you wherether u were Wujoodi or Shuhoodi.. but yes he shall ask u to bring forth the ' Qalb e Saleem ' that was required of you to carry with..

said do u know the meaning of ' Ahl e dil ' .. the novice responded in negative.. said anyone can be ahle dil.. as everything living possses a beating heart.. so do we call them Ahle Dil.. said No.. Ahle Dil are those people that have surrendered all thier hearts desire to the will of Allah that all thier actions are closely guarded and thier hearts constantly in attention of the Rabb Most high..

May Allah (swt) make us all Ahl e Dil..

plz remember me in ur pious duas..

    wa assalam..
