Boycott Yasmin Mogahed (Mujahid) at Dewsbury on 29MAY2013

Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Yasmin Mogahed (Mujahid) received her B.S. Degree in Psychology and her Masters in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After completing her graduate work, she taught Islamic Studies and worked as a writing instructor for Cardinal Stritch University, and a staff columnist for the Islam section of InFocus News.

She gives lectures on various topics and to a mixed audience very clearly and openly in USA as can be seen in the video above. When she tried to do so in UK she was refuted by Shaykh Mohammad Daniels (HA) here:

Her whole position is based on the understanding of the foreword of Shaykh (Dr) Akram Nadwi (HA)'s book Al-Muhaddithat: The Women Scholars in Islam, the entire book isn't even available in Arabic and not published so she couldn't have read it.

She very clearly doesn't believe in segregation and Pardah in USA so even though she may come to UK and do a Sisters only event her whole position on the matter is problematic. Joking, smiling, laughing anything goes as you can see in the lecture.

When the matter of free-mixing was raised by Shaykh Mohammad Daniels (HA) our dear respected Sister remained indignant, defiant and unrepentant over her issues and so did the organisers Al-Buruj Press.

We understand that the event planned in Dewsbury is Sisters ONLY however we request our Mothers, Sisters & Daughters to stay away from a person with Modernist tendencies and refer to Ulamah who uphold the Sunnah.

This matter concerns us greatly and we personally emailed a number of Scholars and Alhumdolillah someone else has presented the matter to South African Ulamah and here is the answer:

Question: Yasmin Mogahead is giving a talk in Dewsbury. I feel that as she doesn't wear purdah and also address's mixed gatherings, even if her words can change hearts, i don't think it is correct, even participating in a female only gathering of hers. Please help asap so that the reply can be sent before the talk.

ANSWER: It is totally un-Islamic that a strange woman publicly address a mixed audience of men and woman. In Islam, it is compulsory for a woman to remain within the confines of her home and observe purdah from na mahram strange men. However, if the Ulama and the pious of that area attest to the piety of a specific woman, then after adopting all measures in terms of purdah, they may allow her to address a group of women in private. There are many Ahaadith which are reported from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) with regards to the compulsion of purdah in Islam. Refer to

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Answered by:

Mufti Zakaria Makada

Checked & Approved:

Mufti Ebrahim Salejee

Request to Non-Scholars:

You may ask as to why she is being opposed when she is addressing a woman only gathering? The issue isn’t about this specific gathering but the general approach of Sister Yasmin Mogahed (Mujahid) and her general free mixing and the nature of her programs in USA (and also in UK). We would like to remind everyone of this saying of Imam Ibn Sireen (RA) recorded in Saheeh Muslim when he said:

إن هذا العلم دين فانظروا عمن تأخذون دينكم
This Knowledge is a Matter of Deen, so be careful who you take your deen from.

Hazrat Abbas ibn Masood (ra) narrates that the Holy Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam said, "Verily, the closest person to me on the Day of Judgement will be the one who sends the most salutations on me."

The Aspiring Durood Club: I make intention to recite 0-100 durood per day.

The Silver Durood Club: I make intention to recite 100-300 durood per day.

The Gold Durood Club: I make intention to recite 300-500 durood per day.

The Platinum Durood Club: I make intention to recite 500-1000 durood per day.

The Lovers of Durood Club: I make intention to recite in excess of 1,000 durood per day.

To reach your intentions you will need to make a plan. Without a plan it will be impossible to hit your target daily goal. First think when would you have a decent amount of free time to reach your goal, in the morning or evening or maybe in the night? What is practical and easy? Now think, what distractions could come in the way and deter you from reaching your goal? Now think, how can you eliminate those distractions during that time period so that you can reach your goal? Now make dua for your daily goal.

I want to use this time to introduce a new aspect and angle to this discussion and also introduce a new book into this mix which I have not yet mentioned openly on SF but it is a phenomenal discourse and I believe it should be in every believers home, Futuh Al Ghaib. The title of the book is Futuh Al Ghaib (Revelations of The Unseen) and it is a discourse of the teachings of Ghous Al Waqt Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (ra). The discourse that I think fits our discussion here is this one and it will give a new angle at looking at difficulties:

Twenty-second Discourse from Futuh al-Ghaib

On the testing of the believer's faith

The Shaikh (may Allah be well pleased with him, and grant him contentment) said:

Allah is always testing His believing servant in proportion to his faith. Thus if a person's faith is very great and steadily increasing, his trial will be great as well. The trial of a Messenger is greater than that of a Prophet, because his faith is greater. The trial of a Prophet is greater than that of a Badal, and the trial of a Badal is greater than that of a Wali. Each is tried according to his faith and certitude, on the basis of this saying of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace): "We, the Community of Prophets, are the people most severely tried, then others according to the perfection of their faith."

Allah (Exalted is He) subjects these honorable masters to incessant testing, so they will always stay in His presence and never relax their vigilance, for He loves them. They are the people of love, who love the Lord of Truth, and the lover never likes to be far from his beloved. Affliction serves as a clamp for their hearts and a noose for their selfish natures, checking their tendency to drift away from their true goal and to place their confidence and trust in others instead of their Creator.

As this becomes a permanent condition for them, their passions melt, their selves are broken, and truth is distinguished from falsehood. Then cravings, willful desires, and the appetite for pleasure and comfort in this world and the hereafter, all retract toward the sphere of the self, while toward the sphere of the heart come trust in the promise of the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He), cheerful acceptance of His decree, satisfaction with His gifts, patient endurance of His trials, and the feeling of safety from the evil of His creatures. Thus the power of the heart is strengthened, and it acquires control over all the limbs and organs of the body. Tribulation fortifies the heart and certitude, verifies faith and patience, and weakens the self and the passions, because whenever suffering comes, and what it meets with in the believer is patience, cheerful acceptance, and surrender to the action of the Lord (Almighty and Glorious is He), the Exalted Lord is pleased with him and thanks him. Then he also receives help, additional blessings and success. Allah (Exalted is He) has said:

If you are thankful, I will give you more. (14:7)

When the self is moved to apply to the heart [qalb] for satisfaction of some carnal appetite or indulgence in some pleasure, and the heart agrees to this request without authorization and permission from Allah (Exalted is He), the result is disregard for the Lord of Truth, polytheism and sinful rebellion. Allah (Exalted is He) will therefore condemn them both to disappointment, trouble, subjection to other people, sickness and disease, injury and disorder. Both the heart and the self will get a share of this.

If the heart will not give the self what it wants, however, until it receives permission from the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He) through inspiration [ilham] in the case of Saints, or explicit revelation [wahy] in the case of Envoys and Prophets (blessing and peace be upon them) and acts accordingly in giving or withholding, then Allah rewards them both with mercy and blessing, well-being and contentment, light and wisdom, nearness to Himself, affluence, security from disasters and help against enemies.

This you must know and remember it well! Be ready for trouble if you rush to respond to the self and to passion! Far better to pause in such cases, and await the Lord's consent (Glorious is His Majesty), so that you may remain safe in this world and the hereafter, if Allah (Exalted is He) so will.

I have been thinking a lot about this lately so I decided to pen my thoughts. Everywhere one looks (on forums especially) its "them" and "us" and here by "them" I do not mean the enemy. I'm talking about "them" and "us" within ourselves, within the Muslim Ummah.

If a person is a Madhabi, the Ghayr-Madhabis are "them" and if a person is a Deobandi, the Barelwis are "them" yet all of us are "us". Ok so let's leave that aside for a moment since it involves a few Aqeedah issues. Lets ponder on the following.

If a person is a Hanafi, the followers of other Madhaahib are "them".

If a person is inclined towards Tasawwuf/Sufism, the Tablighis are "them".

If a person is devoted toward the Tablighi Jama'ah, the Tasawwufis /Sufis are "them".

If a person is inclined to a particular opinion of a particular group of Ulama, then the followers of the other opinion are "them" and Musallis of each Masjid and students of each Madrasah and mureeds of each Shaykh are "them & us" to each other!

So who are "them"?

They are none other than our own brothers and sisters, bound by the love for Allah 'azzawajall and His beloved Rasool sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam and the Noble Qur'an! A bond stronger than the bond of blood ties!

There is no "them" and "us" my dear brothers and sisters, there is only "us"! Looking at forum discussions we see that once the tag of "them" is attached, they become the enemy and then Akhlaaq is thrown out of the window creating disunity and causing hurt to each other.

We have all been active on forums and each of us know how much we have contributed to this sad state of affairs. Allaahu akbar! It has come to such a state that Ummahforumers are "them" to Sunniforumers and Sunniforumers are "them" to Muftisaysforumers......!

O Allah! Forgive us and unite our hearts and make us like one body so that the whole body hurts when one part of it is hurt and grant us beautiful Akhlaaq towards each other!

We will hold the discussion of the ayah for this post and we will highlight another aspect of why difficulties come in a persons life. Read it in the words of our Hazrath Jalalabadi Moulana Masihullah Khan Sherwani (ra), translated by Dr. Ismail Mangera sahab (db) found in For Friends Discourses volume 16:

The mysteries behind the death of a kaafir and a mu'min

Two persons became very ill, one was a Yahud, a kaafir, and the other was a Muslim, a mu'min. The Yahudi kaafir had a desire, "I am close to death. I wish I could eat some fish!" The Muslim mu'min also had a wish, "I am dying. If I could just have some olive oil!" The one was anxious to have his wish of eating fish fulfilled and the other was anxious to have his wish of having some olive oil fulfilled. Allah Ta'ala summoned two malaa'ikah. To the one Allah Ta'ala gave the instruction, "There are no fish in his pond. Place a fish in the pond for the Yahud to eat." To the other malaa'ikah Allah Ta'ala gave the instruction, "The Muslim mu'min wishes to have some olive oil. There is bottle of olive oil on a shelf in his house. Take the bottle and destroy it with the olive oil so that he cannot have it.!"

Until the full account is not heard, one does not what kind of thoughts and doubts go through our minds. This is why one should listen to a lecture (bayaan) till the end. A bayaan is such that midway through one topic another and then another topic is discussed, with the speaker coming back to complete the incomplete topics which were only partially discussed.

To continue: Both the malaa'ikah met on the way to fulfil their tasks. The one asked the other, "Where are you going?" The first one said, "I have been ordered to go to a particular Yahud. He has a desire to eat some fish, and there are no fish in his pond, so I have to place one in it for him to eat. Where are you off to?" "I have been ordered to go to the house of a Muslim. He has a desire to partake of some olive oil. There is a bottle of olive oil on a shelf in his house. My instructions are to destroy the bottle and the olive oil so that he cannot have it." The second malaa'ikah enquired from the first, "Did you ask Allah Ta'ala why?" The first one said, "Yes, I did. I said, ‘O Allah! The Yahudi kaafir is dying and You are fulfilling his dying wish and heart's desire. There is no fish, yet You are seeing to his wish. What is the wisdom behind this?" "What was the reply?"

Our sisters and mothers should listen very carefully to this!

"Allah Ta'ala said, ‘Whenever the Yahud had performed any goodness in the world, I had compensated him in the world with some khair.'"

Note that good deeds performed in this world fall into two categories: One is where the intention is to attain some qurb - that is, attain some thawaab, attain some reward, attain closeness to Allah Ta'ala, attain His pleasure, attain higher stages in Jannat. The other category is where the intention is solely to benefit the creation. One finds others give water to drink to the thirsty in hot weather, feed animals, give charity and assist people with problems out of a sense of compassion, and so forth.

"Allah Ta'ala continued, ‘He is now on the point of dying. He has to his credit one good deed, for which he has still not been compensated. He has this strong desire to eat fish. I want his desire to be fulfilled so that he is compensated in this world for the good he has done. And, in the hereafter, he proceeds straight into Jahannam. That is why I have instructed you to feed him the fish.'"

Are you pondering over this?

The first malaa'ikah then asked the second one, "Did you enquire as to why you had to destroy the olive oil for the Muslim not to be able to partake of it?" "Yes, I did." "What did Allah Ta'ala say?" "Allah Ta'ala said, ‘Whenever this mu'min Muslim bandah committed any sin, I afflicted him with some problem contrary to his temperament (tabiyat), some difficulty, some sadness and grief, some problem. He made sabr (showed patience and fortitude), on account of which I washed away his sins.'"

Ponder over this. Allah Ta'ala is ArhamurrahImaan - The most merciful of all those who show mercy.

Please read part 1 and part 2 of this post to be caught up with where we are on this post. To continue with this malfuz, discourse, of Moulana Thanvi, he says something’s that we should be attentive of:

The Malfuz/Discourse

Moulana Thanvi (ra) says that:

"For someone’s life to be free of difficulties is no proof of their "maqbuliyat", acceptance, in the court of Allah swt because it happened to great Ambiya (as), Prophets of Allah swt, that they had great difficulties in their life, yet they are maqbul, accepted, in the court of Allah swt, and on the other hand look at someone like Firaun, the Pharaoh, that for 400 years or 450 years he claimed to be God and never even had as much as a headache though he is mardud, rejected, in the court of Allah swt. And then there are the difficulties experienced by the Holy Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam that for months the stove in his house did not light and pots and pans were of no use because there was no cooking even being done for months at a time, so simply by observing the superficial and apparent conditions of their lives can anyone say, and we seek the protection of Allah from this, that Firaun, the Pharaoh, just because he had no apparent difficulties in life that he is more successful and that him not having any difficulties in life is a proof of his success?"

My thoughts:

As we read the ayah of Surah Baqara earlier that Allah swt has said that He will test is in our life with some sort of difficulty, a little bit of difficulty, not to debilitate us, but to test us. For Allah swt to reveal this to us it is a mercy of Allah swt upon us in a way telling us, "Be ready for this, be prepared for this, expect that I am going to do this, not to debilitate you, but to test you because the world I put you in is a place of test and trial and not your final destination."

What is the definition of difficulty? Difficulty is anything that goes against ones temperament. One time the Holy Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam was sitting with Hazrath Aisha (ra) and they had a candle lit when suddenly a gust of wind blew the candle out and upon this the Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam recited,

He said, "“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” This is the secret behind dealing successfully with difficulties as the ayah we mentioned before contains this too,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the rightly guided. – Quran 2:155-156

Why of all things should we specifically recite "Inna lillah" upon a difficulty? We could recite anything else, we could just simply call upon Allah swt directly, why particularly recite this ayah? It is not to simply recite it like a parrot but more so to recite it and ponder on the lesson contained in it:

Allah swt is my Khaaliq/Creator

La Khaaliq ill-Allah. I belong to Allah because He is my Khaaliq, He is my Creator. This is how Ahlullah think, this is their perspective. I belong to Allah, He is my Khaaliq, He is my Creator. He created me and whatever is outside of me and whatever is inside of me. He created me and I had no say in my creation. If He wanted He could have created me as a dog or a pig or a mosquito or a fly or a wall or a donkey or whatever He wished to create me as. He created me as a human being, He created me as a believer. He created the family I am born in, He created the people I am surrounded by. He created my loved ones, He created those near me, He created those far from me, He created my friends, He created my enemies. He created me and He created the actions I do and He created the conditions that are in my life, He created the circumstances in my life. All are His creation.

"Allah is the Creator Of all things..." - Quran 39:62

"Allah created you and what you do..." Quran 37:96

Allah swt created me and the conditions in my life, the circumstances I face, these are all creations of Allah swt. Since He created me I am totally subject to His will and wish.

Allah swt is my Maalik/Master and Owner

La Maalik ill-Allah. Since Allah swt is my Khaaliq, my Creator, He is also my Maalik, my Master, my Owner. I am His possession. Everything is a creation of Allah swt, He is their Khaaliq, Creator, and He is their Maalik, their Master and Owner. His creation are His possession. He can do as He wishes to His creation, He is their Khaaliq, He is their Maalik, He owns them, He has right to do to His possessions what He wishes.

Allah swt is my Rabb/Lord, the Being who develops something from its most incomplete state to its most complete state

Allah swt is my Khaaliq, my Creator, therefore, He is my Maalik, my Owner and my Master, therefore, He is my Rabb, my Lord, He is the being who developed me from my most incomplete state to my most complete state. He did this with all of His creation. When I was in my mothers womb He provided me all that a fetus needs, how I needed it and in a way I could have gotten it. When I was a newborn baby He gave me all that a newborn baby needs, how I needed it and in a way I could get it. Now at this old age He is providing for me all that I need how I need it and in a way I can get it. In this manner He developed me from nothing into whatever I am today.

Allah swt is my Haakam/Administrator, Ruler, Judge

La Haakama ill-Allah. He is my Khaaliq, He created me, He is my Creator, therefore, He is my Maalik, He is my Owner, He is my Master, I am His possession, therefore, He is my Rabb, He is my Lord, He developed me from my most incomplete state to my most complete state, therefore, He is my Haakam, He is my Administrator and the Administrator of all of my affairs. Me and my affairs, my circumstances, my situations, He is their Khaaliq, He is their Maalik, He is their Rabb, and He is there Haakim too, so all are dependent upon His Administration, as He commands.

Ahlullah think like this. Insha'Allah to be continued...

“I love you, mom,” whispered Yusuf as he wrapped the soft pashmina shawl around his mother’s shoulders. The vibrant peach contrasted with the dark rings that had grown under her eyes lately, but their brightness had not faded.

Her eyes lit up as she stroked the delicate embroidery on the edge of the shawl, “And this…Yusuf?”

Yusuf looked at her with the excitement of a young boy unpacking his first bicycle, “Wait ma…there’s more,” he cried, as he removed a burgundy jewellery box. Presenting it in front of his mother, like they were the crown jewels, he gingerly lifted the lid to reveal a string of exquisite cultured pearls, delicately strung together with small black pearls breaking the shimmer of the white pearls.

“Yusuf!” exclaimed his mother, her eyes brimming, “What’s all this?”

Yusuf stepped back and looked at his mother holding the pearl necklace close to her chest, admiring it, “Mom, always wanted a pearl necklace….”

“But it must have cost you a small fortune,” said Saffiyah as she held the pearls up to the light, studying the delicate changes of colour as she turned the necklace, “Why now…what’s special?”

“It’s my mother’s day!” he beamed.

“Er..,” began Saffiyah as she craned her neck to look at the calendar behind her, “But it’s not mother’s day. Not for a while, yet?” a puzzled look settling on her face.

“I didn’t say it was Mother’s day,” replied Yusuf, “I said it was MY mother’s day. But let me explain….”

“You remember I told you about Nasser who recently moved here from the coast?”

Saffiyah nodded in acknowledgement.

“Last night I met him at Sheikh’s program and asked him why he always begged sheikh for duas. I just found it strange that he would always insist that Sheikh make dua for him. He gave me an odd reply – he asked me if my mother was alive, and if I had fifteen minutes. I confirmed that I had both. We sat at the back of the masjid and he told me his story.”

Yusuf paused to pour some tea, adding a sugar to each cup, handing one to his mother he continued, “Nasser told me that since his door of dua (supplication) had closed a long time ago, he had to seek another door for dua. Not understanding, I asked him what he meant. He was silent for a long time, and I thought perhaps I said something wrong, but he just looked at me and smiled. Wiping a tear from his eye he told me that his mother passed away when he was only five years old. He said that he could still remember the smell of her hair after she washed it, but remembered little else.”

Yusuf watched his mother sipping her tea and noticed just how wrinkled her hands had become, the gold wedding ring still sat gracefully on her ring finger. She always took pride in grooming her nails, buffing them to a perfect shine.

“After Nasser’s mother passed away he lived in the care of his aunties. They were good to him and cared for him as one of their own. They bought him what he needed and he had much of what he needed. Then he told me “You know, Joe, no one can replace the embrace of a mother. And no one can replace the dua (prayer) of a mother. I lost that dua a long time ago.” Then I thought of all the duas you make for me - how often when I rush out of the house you always say, “Yusuf, slow down, Allah Ta'ala be with you!” “Allah Hafiz.” “Yusuf, may Allah Ta'ala make your children the coolness of your eye.”

“Ma…I never really cherished those duas until I heard Nasser’s story,” said Yusuf, dabbing his eye with a tissue, “I never knew that those were treasures beyond measure. And then it made some sense to me of what Sheikh said when he quoted Abdulla Ibn 'Abbas (RA), "If any Muslim obeys Allah regarding his parents, Allah will open two gates of the Garden for him. If there is only one parent, then one gate will be opened. If one of them is angry, then Allah will not be pleased with him until that parent is pleased with him."

“And when Nasser told me – ‘Joe (as Yusuf was referred to by his friends), you know, I will never be able to call anyone in this world Mum, and I will never know the embrace of a mother. You still have it, Joe, value it, treasure it,’ I realised that what Allah had favoured me with was something so special that I couldn’t just celebrate it once a year and call it mother’s day. I decided that from now MY Mother’s day will be Every Day! - Yesterday, today and tomorrow will all be mother’s day. I can never repay you, but I know the heart of a mother asks for no repayment. And…if I can do nothing else for my mother’s day then I will at least thank Allah that he allowed my door of dua to be open for one more day.”

“Forgive me ma…..” Yusuf choked, “I need to do so much more for you….”

Saffiyah clasped his hands and stroked his face, “You are a good son, Yusuf, Allah Ta'ala will grant you lots of goodness in this world and the next.”

.
The following paragraphs discredit the erroneous claim of some individuals: that only the narrations of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are authentic. This rebuttal is summarized in five points.

An Outdated Misconception

Firstly, in the fourth century of Islam, there existed a deviated sect which – like some individuals today- claimed that besides the ahadith of Sahihain, all other narrations are unacceptable. This false accusation was the reason for which Imam Abu Abdillah Muhammad ibn Abdillah Al-Hakim Al-Naisaburi (rahimahullah) compiled his famous work entitled: “Al-Mustadrak ‘alas Sahihain’’, in which he endeavored to compile those ahadith that fulfill the criteria of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim but were not included therein.

In his introduction, Imam Al-Hakim (rahimahullah) says: “Neither of them (i.e. Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) or Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) have stated that there exists no other authentic narrations besides what they have chosen”. [Al Mustadrak, vol.1 pg.2]

When commenting on the criteria laid down by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah), the scholars generally rely upon their own scrutiny of the respective books (i.e. Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The reason for this is that very little has being explained by the authors themselves. For example, Imam Al- Bukhari (rahimahullah) has not written an introduction to his book, wherein he would have mentioned his criterion for accepting ahadith as sahih, or as to what would be his methodology in his book. This naturally leads to difference of opinion among the scholars.

However, there can be no difference of opinion when “the man speaks for himself”, as is the case in the topic under discussion.

Imam Al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) said: “I have memorized one hundred thousand authentic ahadith.” [Tazkiratul Huffadh – vol.2 pg.556]

Interestingly, he only included nine thousand and eighty two of them (including repetitions) in his Al-Sahih! (Refer: Hadyus Saari, pg.653)

Imam Al-Isma’ili (rahimahullah) has quoted Imam Al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) as saying: ‘’I have only cited sahih (authentic) ahadith in this book (i.e. Sahih Al-Bukhari) However, the amount of sahih ahadeeth that I omitted there from is much more.’’ [Hadyus Saari pg.9]
Imam Ibrahim ibn Ma’qal Al-Nasafi (rahimahullah) reports that Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) said: “I have only quoted authentic ahadith in my book, and I excluded many other authentic narrations for the fear of monotony.” [ibid pg.9; Tarikh Dimashq vol.55 pg.54
Imam Abu Bakr al Hazimi (rahimahullah) states, ‘Imam Al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) never intended to encompass every authentic narration.’ [Shurutul A-immah]
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has made a similar statement in his book Sahih Muslim, “Chapter on Tashahhud”: “I haven’t quoted every single authentic narration in this book.“ i.e, there are many authentic narrations that are not included therein.
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) is also reported to have said: “I haven’t ever claimed that those narrations which are excluded from my Sahih are weak. My only claim is that the ahadith contained in my book are authentic.” [Tarikh Baghdad and Al-Imam Ibn Majah wa kitabu Al-Sunan, pg.107]

These quotations clearly explain the reality; that there exists many authentic narrations outside of the Sahihain.

The many types of Sahih Hadith

Secondly, Hafiz Ibn Salah (rahimahullah) and others have classified the Sahih ahadith in to seven categories:

1) Those ahadith that appear in both, Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. (Muttafaq ‘Alaih)

2) Those ahadith that appear only in Sahih al Bukhari.

3) Those that appear only in Sahih Muslim.

4) Those that match the criteria of both, Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, but are not found therein.

5) Those that match the criteria of Sahih al Bukhari only and are not found therein.

6) Those that match the criteria of Sahih Muslim only and are not found therein.

7) Those that do not fit the description of any one of the above, but were classified authentic by some reliable Muhaddithun.

[Muqaddimah ibn Salah pg.27; Tadribur Rawi pg.73 and Sharh Nukhbah pg.64]

In light of the above, the last four types of ahadith do not appear in the Sahihain. Despite that, they are still considered as authentic.
Added to this is the fact that Imam Al-Hakim (rahimahullah) has cited ten types of Sahih ahadith, many of which are not included in the Sahihain. [Tadribur Rawi pgs.85-86]

More Books that contain only Sahih Hadith

Thirdly, many Muhaddithun have compiled books which they ensured contained only authentic narrations.

Undoubtedly many of their narrations are not found in the Sahihain.

Some of these compilations are:

a) Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik (rahimahullah)

b) Sahih ibn Khuzaimah

c) Sahih ibn Hibban

d) Al Mukhtarah of Imam Diyaudeen al Maqdisi (rahimahullah) and others.

The General Practice of the Scholars

Fourthly, the practice of all the Muhaddithun throughout time also confirms the prevalence of authentic ahadith outside of the Sahihain. In this regard, countless Muhaddithun have classified various ahadith (that do not appear in Sahihain) as Sahih.

Books such as the following clearly substantiate this:

a) Al-Targheeb wa Tarheeb of Hafidh Al-Mundhiri (rahimahullah)

b) Riyadu Saliheen of Imam Al-Nawawi (rahimahullah)

c) Majma’uz Zawaid of ‘Allamah Al-Haithami (rahimahullah)

d) Nasbur Rayah of ‘Allamah Al-Zaila’ee (rahimahullah)

e) Fathul Bari of Hafidh Ibn Hajar Al-’Asqalani (rahimahullah)

Imam Bukhari Himself

Fifth and Lastly, there are several ahadith that are not in the sahihain which Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) was asked to comment on. Many of them have been classified as sahih by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) himself! (Examples can be found in Al-‘Ilalul Kabeer of Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah)

Conclusion

These five points points are sufficient to prove the fallacy of the claim that: there exists no Sahih hadith outside of the Sahihain (Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Therefore, if any particular madhab (school of fiqh) substantiates its viewpoint with a narration outside of the Sahihain, there should be no objection as long as the narration is suited for that purpose.

One who demands otherwise is quite far off from reality, since the Imams of the four famous schools of fiqh actually lived before the existence of the Sahihain!

Note: The purpose of this article is not to disparage these two most authentic books of hadith.

The Sahihain will always enjoy the rank of being “the most authentic books that were ever authored by man”.

The motive is just to clarify a reality that seemed clouded to many contemporaries.

May Allah Ta’ala guide us all.

"Difficulties come in the life of Ahlullah (the pious people/Friends of Allah swt/those who have a close relationship with Allah swt) and also the worldly people, but there is a world of difference in how these two types of people deal with their difficulties..."

My Thoughts:

In the previous post we covered that difficulties come in everyone’s life, no one is free from difficulty. Brace for some unexpected difficulty, expect some unexpected difficulty, don’t be surprised if an unexpected difficulty comes in your life, be prepared for it. Don’t bring upon difficulty on yourself, this is arrogance and stupidity, ask Allah swt for easiness in your life. Unexpected circumstances are going to come, some more than others, the question is how will you react and what will you do in those difficulties?

We have taken many tests in our life. Similarly, the world is a testing center and life is a test. A test has some very easy questions you breeze through and also some very difficult questions that make you sweat, stress you out and might even make you upset and cry. Life is a testing center, the conditions that come during the test in the testing center mean nothing as far as the outcome and result. Just because someone is sweating during the test doesn’t mean they failed. Just because someone is sleeping through the test doesn’t mean they are successful. The result and outcome of the test is usually posted days later. The result of this test we wont know until the dust in our grave settles and we reach the hereafter and we are seen and told all that we did. To deliberately ask for a test is stupidity and it is a sign of arrogance, one should always ask for easiness in ones life, this is humility and humbleness and is liked by Allah swt. The humble person raises his hands in dua and says, "O Allah taala, I am a weak person, I am a defeated person. I get shaken very quickly. Do not allow my eeman to fall in jeopardy. Give me easiness in my life and don’t test me, I have no strength in me to withstand any test." The Holy Quran has taught us a dua regarding this:

Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." Surah Baqara 286

Moulana Thanvi (ra) says:

"Difficulties come in the life of Ahlullah (the pious People/Friends of Allah swt/those people who have a very close connection to Allah swt) and also the worldly people, but there is a world of difference in how these two types of people deal with their difficulties...When Ahlullah get sick they don’t think 'O my, what will happen if this illness gets worse?' If Ahlullah are involved in some legal case they don’t think 'O my, what will happen if I lose this case?' Ahlullah dont think, 'O my, if I don’t get anything to eat tomorrow what will happen?' Such thoughts don’t occur to Ahlullah but rather in all conditions and situations their heart is at peace. They have something hidden in their heart because of which they have contentment and solace even if by worldly standards they don’t even own a needle. And as far as worldly people, their internal condition is the complete opposite of this."

My thoughts:

The above statement of Hakeem ul Ummah (ra) is something for all of us to ponder and reflect on and compare it to our situation. Look at our current situation and condition; what thoughts, fears, and anxiety has overtaken our heart? Constantly we are caught up in one matter or another, constantly in this fear and that fear, always in some worry or another, always in some concern or another. Ahlullah are not like this. They have something in their heart which keeps them protected from the fear, distress and anxiety. Ahlullah do experience difficulties and at times much more greater difficulties than others, and with the intention of sunnah they make an effort to overcome those difficulties, but the condition of their heart is at peace, contentment, solace and tranquil. What is that hidden thing? It is taluq ma'Allah, their strong relationship with Allah swt. Ahlullah might not even own a needle but they are so content that even the great kings of the time with all of their luxuries cant experience such happiness. As you know many Ahlullah have stated that,

“If the kings and sons of kings knew what joy we experience, they would fight us for it with their swords.”

Insha'Allah we will continue...

Subhan'Allah, just see how much barakah there is in the malfuzaat (discourses) of Hakeem ul Ummah (ra). This past jummah just as I was leaving for Jummah salaah I got an idea to pick a random volume of Malfuzaat and open it, I didnt have time to read it because I was on my way to salaah, but I just wanted to see randomly what mazmoon, the topic being discussed, would come up and the topic was "How common laymen and Ahlullah deal with difficulties" - phenomenal. My idea at the time was that "Allah swt is my Rabb, the Rabb is responsible for the islah of His creation, Allah swt is the real shaikh, the real Murabbi, the real Muslih, let me pick up this discourse and see in what way my Murabbi and Muslih will do my islah." I marked the pages and left for the salaah, returned back and read the discourse. I would like to share it here with you all, this can be found in jild, volume, 4 of the malfuzaat. I deliberately post the malfuzaat in its original Urdu here for a couple of reasons; (1) it gives the direct citation of the book so I dont have to worry about it, (2) it keeps us connected directly to the words of our pious elders. To continue, Hakeem ul Ummah has stated:

http://theredsulphur.files.wordpress...zaat-1jpeg.jpg

I personally feel that this malfuz should be read, studied, and distributed. This malfuz is not only pertinent for us common laymen believers but also to non Muslims. I think everyone can benefit from this malfuz. To continue, Hakeem ul Ummah (quddus us sirruhu) writes that:

Difficulties come in everyone’s life, difficulties come in the life of worldly people and difficulties also come in the life of Ahlullah (the pious people of Allah).

Allah swt has told us in the Holy Quran that:

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the rightly guided. - Quran 2:155-156

The train of our life travels on the tracks of patience and gratefulness. Difficulties are going to come in life. Life is full of ups and downs, life sometimes has tremendous peaks and very low, depressing valleys. These difficulties will come either in our finances where suddenly we will face some hardships financially, or these difficulties might come in our family life where we will face some difficulty in the loss of our loved ones, or maybe the end of a marriage, or maybe these difficulties will come in the shape of poor health or poor health of our loved ones, the shape of the difficulty might be different but difficulties will come in life this is certain. We always look at someone else’s life and think that that person has no difficulties, everything is smooth for that person while we have tremendous mountains of difficulty in our life - this is not true my friends, this is just a Shaytani (Satanic) whisper. Allah swt has given me the company of many, many different type of people in my short life, from the most elite rich to the dirt poor, from all backgrounds, from almost all over the world, from many different cultures, they all have some difficulty or another and when you hear their stories you thank Allah for not giving you their story, trust me. Everyone always looks like they are in great shape but once you scratch the surface and spend a few days with them you find out just how knee deep they are in difficulties. A wealthy person might not have difficulties and hardships financially, but he will have it in some other way. A healthy person might not have difficulties and hardships health-wise, but he will have it in some other way.

What is the objective Allah swt has behind these difficulties, is it to debilitate us? No. It is just to test us a bit, as in the above ayah it says "shay-im minal khauf," it is not total khauf but some of khauf, not to totally put us in fear and debilitate us, it is just to put us under some difficulty and create a fear in us thereby using that fear to test us a bit to see who is patient and turns to Allah swt, relies upon Allah swt, who gets stronger in his deen by means of the test. This is the idea behind difficulty. So difficulties come in life in different shapes and forms and let me tell you that difficulties come in a persons life according to their level of eeman, faith, remember this. The Prophets (as) undergo the most difficulties and then after them the pious people undergo difficulties according to their level of eeman as the Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam himself said when asked about this that, "The prophets, then the righteous." So difficulties come in a persons life according to the capacity the person has within him to endure them. Some Ambiya (as), the Prophets of Allah, were literally cut in half and had their body mutilated, such difficulties came in their life. Ibrahim (as), the Khalil, or the Close Friend, of Allah swt, was made to strip nude in front of the entire city and hurled into a fire. And there are countless difficulties that the Prophet salallaho alayhi wa sallam endured. Isnt this so strange, the Khalil, Khalil means a very close dear friend, the Khalil of Allah swt is being stripped nude in front of his people and then hurled into a fire, subhan'Allah.

Difficulties are utilized by Allah swt to forgive the sins of the believers. Narrated Aisha (ra) that Allah's Apostle salallaho alayhi wa sallam said, "No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn." Usually a difficulty comes in a persons life, into a family, into a home, and then what do we see? Suddenly people are steadfast in salaah, people are steadfast in reciting Quran, people are busy engaged in making extra dua to Allah swt praising Him firmly fixing their conviction upon His being, His might, His power and pleading to Him to remove the difficulty, thereby connecting to Him. We see difficulty coming in our life and we see that we get stronger in our deeni practice - how can anything that makes a person more stronger in his deeni practice be termed as a true difficulty? It is not a true difficulty, it is more of a means to get that person closer to Allah swt if that person endures it with patience. Narrated Abu Huraira (ra) that Allah's Apostle salallaho alayhi wa sallam said, "If Allah wants to do good to somebody, He afflicts him with trials."

Insha'Allah we will continue with the discourse...
