The following paragraphs discredit the erroneous claim of some individuals: that only the narrations of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are authentic. This rebuttal is summarized in five points.

An Outdated Misconception

Firstly, in the fourth century of Islam, there existed a deviated sect which – like some individuals today- claimed that besides the ahadith of Sahihain, all other narrations are unacceptable. This false accusation was the reason for which Imam Abu Abdillah Muhammad ibn Abdillah Al-Hakim Al-Naisaburi (rahimahullah) compiled his famous work entitled: “Al-Mustadrak ‘alas Sahihain’’, in which he endeavored to compile those ahadith that fulfill the criteria of Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim but were not included therein.

In his introduction, Imam Al-Hakim (rahimahullah) says: “Neither of them (i.e. Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) or Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) have stated that there exists no other authentic narrations besides what they have chosen”. [Al Mustadrak, vol.1 pg.2]

When commenting on the criteria laid down by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah), the scholars generally rely upon their own scrutiny of the respective books (i.e. Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). The reason for this is that very little has being explained by the authors themselves. For example, Imam Al- Bukhari (rahimahullah) has not written an introduction to his book, wherein he would have mentioned his criterion for accepting ahadith as sahih, or as to what would be his methodology in his book. This naturally leads to difference of opinion among the scholars.

However, there can be no difference of opinion when “the man speaks for himself”, as is the case in the topic under discussion.

Imam Al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) said: “I have memorized one hundred thousand authentic ahadith.” [Tazkiratul Huffadh – vol.2 pg.556]

Interestingly, he only included nine thousand and eighty two of them (including repetitions) in his Al-Sahih! (Refer: Hadyus Saari, pg.653)

Imam Al-Isma’ili (rahimahullah) has quoted Imam Al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) as saying: ‘’I have only cited sahih (authentic) ahadith in this book (i.e. Sahih Al-Bukhari) However, the amount of sahih ahadeeth that I omitted there from is much more.’’ [Hadyus Saari pg.9]
Imam Ibrahim ibn Ma’qal Al-Nasafi (rahimahullah) reports that Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) said: “I have only quoted authentic ahadith in my book, and I excluded many other authentic narrations for the fear of monotony.” [ibid pg.9; Tarikh Dimashq vol.55 pg.54
Imam Abu Bakr al Hazimi (rahimahullah) states, ‘Imam Al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) never intended to encompass every authentic narration.’ [Shurutul A-immah]
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has made a similar statement in his book Sahih Muslim, “Chapter on Tashahhud”: “I haven’t quoted every single authentic narration in this book.“ i.e, there are many authentic narrations that are not included therein.
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) is also reported to have said: “I haven’t ever claimed that those narrations which are excluded from my Sahih are weak. My only claim is that the ahadith contained in my book are authentic.” [Tarikh Baghdad and Al-Imam Ibn Majah wa kitabu Al-Sunan, pg.107]

These quotations clearly explain the reality; that there exists many authentic narrations outside of the Sahihain.

The many types of Sahih Hadith

Secondly, Hafiz Ibn Salah (rahimahullah) and others have classified the Sahih ahadith in to seven categories:

1) Those ahadith that appear in both, Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. (Muttafaq ‘Alaih)

2) Those ahadith that appear only in Sahih al Bukhari.

3) Those that appear only in Sahih Muslim.

4) Those that match the criteria of both, Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, but are not found therein.

5) Those that match the criteria of Sahih al Bukhari only and are not found therein.

6) Those that match the criteria of Sahih Muslim only and are not found therein.

7) Those that do not fit the description of any one of the above, but were classified authentic by some reliable Muhaddithun.

[Muqaddimah ibn Salah pg.27; Tadribur Rawi pg.73 and Sharh Nukhbah pg.64]

In light of the above, the last four types of ahadith do not appear in the Sahihain. Despite that, they are still considered as authentic.
Added to this is the fact that Imam Al-Hakim (rahimahullah) has cited ten types of Sahih ahadith, many of which are not included in the Sahihain. [Tadribur Rawi pgs.85-86]

More Books that contain only Sahih Hadith

Thirdly, many Muhaddithun have compiled books which they ensured contained only authentic narrations.

Undoubtedly many of their narrations are not found in the Sahihain.

Some of these compilations are:

a) Al-Muwatta of Imam Malik (rahimahullah)

b) Sahih ibn Khuzaimah

c) Sahih ibn Hibban

d) Al Mukhtarah of Imam Diyaudeen al Maqdisi (rahimahullah) and others.

The General Practice of the Scholars

Fourthly, the practice of all the Muhaddithun throughout time also confirms the prevalence of authentic ahadith outside of the Sahihain. In this regard, countless Muhaddithun have classified various ahadith (that do not appear in Sahihain) as Sahih.

Books such as the following clearly substantiate this:

a) Al-Targheeb wa Tarheeb of Hafidh Al-Mundhiri (rahimahullah)

b) Riyadu Saliheen of Imam Al-Nawawi (rahimahullah)

c) Majma’uz Zawaid of ‘Allamah Al-Haithami (rahimahullah)

d) Nasbur Rayah of ‘Allamah Al-Zaila’ee (rahimahullah)

e) Fathul Bari of Hafidh Ibn Hajar Al-’Asqalani (rahimahullah)

Imam Bukhari Himself

Fifth and Lastly, there are several ahadith that are not in the sahihain which Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) was asked to comment on. Many of them have been classified as sahih by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) himself! (Examples can be found in Al-‘Ilalul Kabeer of Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah)

Conclusion

These five points points are sufficient to prove the fallacy of the claim that: there exists no Sahih hadith outside of the Sahihain (Sahih al Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Therefore, if any particular madhab (school of fiqh) substantiates its viewpoint with a narration outside of the Sahihain, there should be no objection as long as the narration is suited for that purpose.

One who demands otherwise is quite far off from reality, since the Imams of the four famous schools of fiqh actually lived before the existence of the Sahihain!

Note: The purpose of this article is not to disparage these two most authentic books of hadith.

The Sahihain will always enjoy the rank of being “the most authentic books that were ever authored by man”.

The motive is just to clarify a reality that seemed clouded to many contemporaries.

May Allah Ta’ala guide us all.

I have been approached countless times from members and questioners about the whispers of shaytaan during ghusl. How does this occur? Well, when you keep feeling that you have not fulfilled the obligatory acts of the ghusl, and you remain in the shower for more than 7-10 minutes, then in all probability you are being targeted by whispers of shaytaan.

Test yourself. Next time you have to make ghusl, make a target witha stopwatch. Check you habbits. Challenge your thoughts and see if you feel any resistance in completing your main ghusl in less than 5 min!! If you cant, you need to start reviewing you bathing procedures to see whether shaytan is attacking you or not.

Remember the previous post. There are only three things needed for ghusl. So if you remain in the shower area thinking that you still have not done your ghusl completely, you are a target.

Believe me, I am not saying anyone and everyone staying in showers for more than 5-10 min is plagued here. No, if you are doing so, so that you can fulfil the sunnah acts of Ghusl, then by all means. But if your worry is that your ghusl is not complete and you are worrying that this cleaning was not sufficient for your salah, then yes, you are indeed being targeted with waswasah.

Solution :

1. Pause ALL the sunnah and mustahab acts.
2. Read the core requirements of your ghusl.
3. For the next 2 weeks, only do the essential elements. Nothing else.

Keep a timer. In two weeks, you should be able to nail it in 5 minutes flat. If you cannot, email me for a review of your habits in showering. I will gladly help.

In Ghusl there are only three requirements. Once these are found, the ghusl is completed.

a. Rinse Mouth
b. Rinse Nose
c. Wet the who body including every hair.

The command which has establish us to attain taharah in Qur'an is Ittaharoo. This word in itself suggests that one needs to do Mubalagha (go an extra length).

So rinse mouth and nose with vigour. But if for some reason you cannot do so, then wash them as much as possible. As for the third part, this must be done to the fullest. So much so that even if a strand of hair is left dry, the ghusl is not complete. This is taken from the qawl of Ali :anhu: "under every hair is janabah".

Hence, once these three are attained, forget about any other thoughts and whispers of shaytaan, and consider your ghusl done.

When it rained, water would fall on to the people. When Umar radiallahu anhulearnt of this he had the gutter removed.

When Hadhrat Abbas heard of this he asked Umar radiallahu anhu, “Why did you remove it?”

He replied, “People were inconvenienced because of it.”

Hadhrat Abbas then said, “I also had realised that, but I had not removed it because Nabi had placed it with his blessed hands. Nabi :saw: had placed it by standing on my shoulders.”

Upon hearing this Hadhrat Umar radiallahu anhu said, “I had no knowledge of this. Now you will have to stand on my shoulders and place it on the roof.”

Subsequently, Hadhrat Abbas radiallahu anhu stood on his shoulders and placed it on the roof. However, this did not dispel the problem that the people were being faced with. Hence, Hadhrat Abbas radiallahu anhu said, “I am now making this house of mine as waqf(endowment) for the Musjid. In your capacity as a trustee, you may now demolish the house and include it in the Musjid.”

Eventually this was what transpired. From this we understand that in order to avert general harm personal harm will be tolerated.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah would fan those performing salaah. Hadhrat Shaikh rahimahullah replied, “Well and good. Bring the kitaab and I will discuss this with Moulana in private.”

Hadhrat Shaikh rahimahullah then told Moulana that using a fan is proven in the hadeeth. Hadhrat Madani rahimahullah enquired about its source. Hadhrat Shaikh rahimahullah replied that this hadeeth does not appear in Bukhaari or Muslim Shareef. Nevertheless, it appears in a kitaab compiled by the principal of Darul Uloom Deoband, Moulana Habeebur-Rahman, and Shaikh-ul-Adab Moulana I`zaaz Ali Sahib has written its commentary. He has also provided the sources for the ahaadeeththat appear therein. This kitaabis also included in the Darul Uloom syllabus and its name is Laamiyaat-ul-Mu`jizaat.

Hadhrat Shaikh rahimahullah then showed him the Hadeeth. On seeing it, Hadhrat Moulana Madani rahimahullah remained silent and stopped disapproving the usage of a fan.
Once, two people had travelled to Syria to enquire from Hadhrat Wahshi :anhu: regarding his assassination of Hadhrat Hamzah :anhu: . One of them covered his entire body only exposing his feet and eyes. He then asked Hadhrat Wahshi :anhu: if he recognised him.

Hadhrat Wahshi replied, “Approximately fifty years ago, a child was born in the house of `Adiy bin Khiyaar and they needed a wet nurse for the child. They had asked me to search for a wet nurse and at that time the child was covered in a sheet. I had only seen the feet ofthat child. It seems that your feet are the same as the feet ofthat child.”
This turned out to be true and this person was Abdullah the son of Adiy bin Khiyaar and his companion was Ja`far bin `Amr bin Umayyah Dhamari.”
Hadhrat Shaikh [Zakariyyah r.a] relied a great deal on Allamah Suyuti rahimahullah, who in spite of being a great muhaddith, was very lenient in his rulings on ahadith.

This is the main cause for the presence of some very weak narrations in Fadail A'mal.

What generally happened was that a number of muhaddithin would mention a certain chain for a hadith, then classify the hadith as fabricated.

Allamah Suyuti would then say that there exists another chain which backs it up, thus it isn't fabricated.

However, upon scrutinizing this second chain, it would very often be found to be too weak to be used to back up another narration, as is the case with the hadith under discussion.

Such can and has happened to other compilation of ahadeeth as well. Does opting such policy in compiling the ahadeeth render's that compilation useless? Hazrat Mufti Saheb continues,

I have heard this- that Fadail Amal does contain certain fabricated nanrrations- from my Respected Teacher, the Great Muhaddith and Muhaqqiq, Moulana Fadhlur Rahman Azmi, the Shaikh al-Hadith of Dar al-Ulum Azadville, in South Africa.

He, like other Ulama, would always defend Fadhail Amal, yet defending it doesn't mean we completely reject realities.

Does the mention of certain fabricated narrations in the book mean the book is worthless?
Not at all, or else nearly all the books of hadith would have to be cast aside as worthless.

I am sure other hadith inclined Deobandi-Ulama would also treat the issue in a similar light.

So we defend the book, not like the Salafi's who attack it, however we defend it as we defend the other books of hadith, not turning a blind eye to realities.

i.e when we know from some researcher that a certain hadeeth is fabricated, then we do not make ta'leem of it. However we do not start maligning the whole compilation simply because the muhaddith due to some negligence of mistake included that hadeeth in the compilation.

While washing feet, we feel we have washed the entire foot, but a small portion on the heel normally remains dry. Remember the last entry! This is from the fardh are. So if you leave this part dry, you do not have wudhu.

And if you do not have wudhu, then it does not matter how many acts you do for rewards, all go down the drain..
On Authority of Ibn cUmar :anhu: who says that Rasulullah :saw: saw some people making wudhu while their heels were shimmering (due to being dry) so he said, "Destruction for the (dry) heels in fire! complete your ablution"
