A saint with Kashf reads Fātiha at the grave of Sh. Hafiz Dhamin r.a

Rating: 2 votes, 4.50 average.
One saint went to the graveside of Sh. Hafiz Dhamin r.a and started to read fātiha. After he finished, he asked as to who this saint (Hafiz Dhamin r.a) is? He is being very jolly! When I was about to read fātiha he says, “Go and read fātiha on some dead person, why have you come to read fātiha here?”

Only then, people told him that Hafiz Dhamin r.a was Shahīd.

    Assalaamu 'alaikum,

I am not sure such incidents should be posted up without additional commentary, as it holds great potential in confusing laymen like myself.

For one, I learned the practice of reciting fatiha over grave is an innovation. If you as the author concur to this, then you should probably add this as a footnote, so that readers don't get the idea that doing so is an 'islamic thing that is part of visiting the grave'.

    Jazaakumullaahu khairan.

It pleases me that you read the post, and moreover were willing enough to raise your concern by replying. In answer to your question,

I do not concur that reciting fatiha on the graveside is an innovation. The act in itself is permissible. Moreover, when innovation is normally attached to fatiha it is referring to the fatiha including food etc.

Maulana eat-halal had mentioned this with regards to question on fatiha for deceases with something like, if it is done with the thinking that it is to release the soul then that has no basis in shariah (or something similar, please use the search facility)

Nonetheless on should recite fatiha at the graves with the right mindset. I hope the following three questions would be useful in the issue.

“So visit the graveyard, for indeed it will remind you of death.” (Abu Dawud)

Death is the beginning of our journey in the Hereafter. It is at this time that we see the reality of the unseen; we will see the angels, the fruits of our good actions and unfortunately, the consequence of our evil deeds. Therefore, it is important to visit the inmates of the grave and to make dua for them, especially one’s parents.

When one visits the graveyard, one should recite the following:

السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين وإنا إن شاء الله للاحقون أسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية (صحيح مسلم2302)

Asalaamu alaikum Ahlad diyaar minal mu’mineen wal muslimeen wa in naa Insha Allaha lal hakoon As alullaha lana wa lakumul ‘aafiya

“Peace be upon you Oh inmates of the grave- the believers and those who submit (to Allah) - and indeed we, Insha Allah, will follow. I ask Allah, for us and for you for ‘Aafiyah (Protection).”

At the graveyard, one could recite the following Surah’s of the Quran:\

    Sura Fatiha
Beginning verses of Sura Baqarah(till

    Ayatul Kursi
Ending verses of Sura Baqarah(from امن الرسول)

    Sura Yaseen
    Sura Mulk

    Sura Takathur
    Sura Ikhlaas(recite 12, 11, 7 or 3 times)

    Sura Falaq
    Sura Naas

If one is not fluent in the recitation of the Quran, all of the above may be difficult to recite. In that case, one could just recite Surah Ikhlaas (Qul huwal lahu ahad) (as stated above).

In essence, any part of the Quran which is easy for recitation could be recited at the graveside. The object is to convey reward to the deceased and this can be fulfilled by the recitation of any part of the Quran. Since the above verses are recorded in the books of Hadith and Fiqh, it will be advisable to recite them; however it is not necessary to recite them.

It is very important to always make dua for your deceased father; not only when you go to the graveyard, but at all times. You should make dua of Magfirat (forgiveness) and Rahma (mercy) for him. Make dua that Almighty Allah grant your father Nur (light) in his Qabr and make his Qabr spacious; make dua for his protection from the punishment of the Qabr and the punishment of Jahannam. And at the beginning or at the end of every day, make this niyat that, whatever good you have done for that day, Allah should grant that reward to be given to your father and to all the Marhoomeen (deceased). By doing this, you will attain reward not only for that particular Ibadat, but for also conveying the reward thereof to the deceased.

There is no Iddat at the death of one’s father.

    And Allah knows best

    Question

Fatwa # 17927 from South Africa

    as salam alai kum ,

I read your Fatwa # 17927 from South Africa dated 14th may 09 regarding recitation of quranic verses over the deceased in the graveyard like surah fatiha , yaseen , ikhlas etc .....
    barakallah feekum

    Answer

    Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Hereunder are the proofs for Fatwa #17927 from Ahadith and the view of the Fuqaha:

قال السيوطي : وبالأحاديث الآتي ذكرها وهي وإن كانت ضعيفة فمجموعها يدل على أن لذلك أصلا وبأن المسلمين ما زالوا في كل عصر يجتمعون ويقرؤون لموتاهم من غير نكير فكان ذلك إجماعا ذكر ذلك كله الحافظ شمس الدين بن عبد الواحد المقدسي الحنبلي في جزء ألفه في المسألة (شرح الصدور,269,دار الفكر)

Imam Suyutiرحمه الله تعالى said: Through the Ahadith which has been mentioned, although it is weak, by gathering them together indicate that there is a basis for it. Indeed, Muslims always gathered and recited for their deceased in every time, without rejection, this is consensus. Hafiz Shamsudeen bin Abdil Waahid Almaqdasi Alhambali رحمه الله تعالى had mentioned all of this in a book he authored regarding this Mas’ala.

    (Sharhus Sudur p269 Darul Fikr)

    )

Hazrat M’aqal ibni Yasaar رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Read Yaseen upon your dead.” (The chain of narrators is weak, two narrators are unknown; however, Abu Dawud has not termed it “weak”. (Al Adthkaar)

Hazrat Anas رضي الله عنه narrates that indeed Rasulullah said “Whoever enters the graveyard should recite Surah Yaseen. Allah will make it easy for the inmates and he will attain good to the amount of people in it (graveyard).

    (Sharhus Sudur p270 Darul Fikr)

Narrated from Hazrat Ali رضي الله عنه (from Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم) “Whoever passes a graveyard and recites “Qul Huwal lahu Ahad” eleven times then conveys its reward to the dead; he will be given the reward according to the number of the dead.”

    (Sharhus Sudur p269 Darul Fikr)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said Rasulullah said “Whoever enters the graveyard then recites “Surah Fatiha”, “Qul Huwalahu Ahad” and “Alhaa kumut Takaathur”, then says “Indeed , I have given the reward of that which I have recited of Your speech to the believing males and female inmates of the grave”;They will be an intercession for him by Allah.”

    (Sharhus Sudur p269 Darul Fikr)

Muhammed bin Ahmed Almarwazi رحمه الله تعالى said “I heard Imam Ahmed bin Hambal رحمه الله تعالى saying “When you enter the graveyard, recite Surah Fatiha, the Mu’awwa thatain (Qul ‘A uthu birabil Falaq and Qul ‘A uthu birabin Naas) and Qul Huwal lahu Ahad and pass the reward thereof to the inmates of the grave, indeed it will reach them.

    (Ihyaa vol.5 p164 Darul Hadith)

“He should recite that which is easy for him of the Quran from Surah Fatiha, the beginning of Surah Baqarah (till Muflihun), Aayatul Kursi, the last verses of Surah Baqarah (Aamanar Rasoolu), Surah Yaseen, Surah Tabaarak, Surah Alhaakumu Takaathur and Surah Ikhlaas eleven, ten, seven or three times; then say “Oh Allah, convey the reward of that which we recited to “this person” or “to them” (whoever he intends to convey the reward to).

    (Ibni ‘Aabideen vol.2. P243)

Imam Nawawi رحمه الله تعالى said “It is preferable to recite that which is easy of the Quran and thereafter, make Dua for them. (Deceased)
