Control the Traffic of Thoughts

Rate this Entry
Going to schools, colleges, universities etc. involves seeing many thing which leads to Shahawaat (Evil) regarding thoughts. It is understandable that these thoughts and desires appear after seeing something which we desire however it does not mean that we lose our Imaan for it by fantasising about it and taking action on it. This is not something we should do. We have been given a boundary and we must make sure we remain within this boundary of the Shari’ah.

We are responsible for the thoughts which we bring in ourselves. Our Mashaikh say our mind is like a roundabout where there is a police man directing the traffic which comes towards the roundabout. He directs the traffic so that there is no traffic jam. As long as the traffic is coming and going its fine, the policeman is doing his job. As soon as there is a traffic jam it shows that the policeman is not doing his job.

When Shaytaan and nafs inspire these thoughts into our minds, thoughts may come but our job is to let them go . We are answerable to Allah for thoughts we bring ourselves. We have to struggle and work on our heart otherwise there is no limit to the thoughts and the desires of the nafs. All that is required of us is to control those thoughts and desires and this can only come with Taqwa (Fear of Allah Ta'ala) and with the purification of the heart. Once the heart is purified even a young person will be able to control his thoughts and desires.

Apologies I should have elaborated in my original post especially for those who do not understand urdu. Let me clarify Mufti sahib in the lecture does not actually speak of controlling Thoughts, but the beneficialside effect of of the method given in his lecture is that you will be able to gain some control over the thoughts. What he says is make Dua perpetually throughhout the day for everything minor or major for Dua initself is a form worship and it will help you build a close relationship with Allah plus a person is constantly in need of something. So if you are feeling thirsty make dua and then go and pour the water if you are feeling hungry make dua, if you are feeling cold make dua, if you are walking and feel you need a new pair of shoes make Dua, and then go and purchase those shoes. If a stray thought occurs make dua seeking Allahs protection, if a blessing occurs make Dua expressing gratitude, If you have
erred in anyway make Dua seeking allahs forgiveness, Make dua seeking his help, so in short make instant and non-stop duas for each and everything. I hope this helps Insha'Allah and explains things. Too finish with I had the following personal experience with this method a few weeks ago having listened to Mufti sahibs method I decided that I was going to try it out for the day. During that morning I visited a shopping mall where I normally use the Internet cafe. The Brother who is the Manager told me they were having a problem with the broadband and all the computers were down, So I asked how long it would take he said it might take upto an hour so I went for a walk and came back an hour or so later. As I approached the counter , too pay for the hiring of the computer I realised I needed to make dua asking Allah to grant me Barakah on the money I Was going too spend at the same time the thought occured In my mind that they have fix prices for the amount of minutes you purchase what good will making dua for brakah have, but since I had decided to follow the programme of making Constant Dua I decided sceptically to make Dua in anycase purely for the Thawab of making a dua, but once I had handed over my money the Manager told me he was going to give me thirty minutes extra free of charge, Subhan'allah and ofcourse I was left gobsmacked considering the scepticism I had when making the Dua.

The following is a transcription of a short but very beneficial speech on the subject of "Thoughts" by Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat which i fortunately came across...I have not condensed it to a short post because I feel Insha Allah the detail will be of great help.

    THOUGHTS

Everyone has thoughts. They continually cross the heart of man. The virtuous ones are from Allah ta'ala and the evil ones are from Shaytaan. The occurrence of thoughts cannot be destroyed but they can be somewhat controlled.

Thoughts are like guests. When guests are entertained with hospitality and amiability, they will return again and again until a relationship develops into a strong friendship where one will not be able to do without the other. If, however, guests are not treated with hospitality, they will feel hurt and will refrain from returning.

Similarly, when a good, virtuous thought occurs and one acts upon it, one entertains it, it will return. Each time it returns and it is entertained a strong relationship will develop and eventually one will always be accompanied by virtuous thoughts leading to virtuous deeds. Good thoughts are delicate and sensitive. If disregarded they will not return.

Evil thoughts are slightly different. They are insensitive and stubborn. They have no self-respect or honour. If entertained they will happily keep returning until a strong relationship develops and one will always be accompanied by evil thoughts leading to evil deeds. However, unlike guests, when ignored they will return again and again without any shame. One will need to courageously ignore evil thoughts countless times before they realise that they are not wanted.

If one adopts this method of entertaining every virtuous thought that occurs; thoughts of remembering Allah ta'ala in gratitude or helping one’s parents, giving in charity or implementing something one has heard or read, then Insha allah one’s life will change speedily for the better. Often when virtuous thoughts occur to man, Shaytaan misleads him into believing that there is no point in acting on the thought since one is drowning in sins anyway. One will think, ‘What difference will one small good deed make when I don’t even perform my five daily salaah? What benefit will it bring when I am engrossed in so many major sins?’

Sometimes Allah ta'ala puts so much blessing in one small deed that it becomes the cause of a person’s whole life changing. Bishr Haafi ra, a renowned saint, was a drunk but through the blessings of one seemingly small virtuous deed he was elevated to the status of sainthood. So much so that Imaam ibn Hanbal ra would get up from his seat to show respect when Bishr Haafi ra entered any of his lectures or lessons on Ahaadeeth. One night while on his way to his usual practice of getting drunk, he happened to see a piece of paper with some inscription on it lying in the dirt. It occurred to him that it may be a verse from the Glorious Qur’an. So he picked it up and realised that it was a verse of the Qur’an. It had ‘Bismillahir rahmaanir raheem’ written on it. He spent the money he had for drinking on buying a piece of cloth and some perfume. He returned home, perfumed the cloth, cleaned the piece of paper, wrapped it in the perfumed cloth and placed it on a high place before retiring to bed. That night he dreamt of someone conveying a message from Allah ta'ala,

    ‘Yaa Bishro’ – ‘O Bishr’
‘Tayyabta ismi’ – ‘You have respected my name’

    ‘La-otayyebanna fid dunyaa wal aakherah’
‘I will give you honour in this world and in the Hereafter’

This one incident changed the life of Bishr Haafi ra. He entertained the virtuous thought that entered his heart and this small act was so blessed that he will remain honoured till the Day of Qiyaamah.

So we should make the firm resolution to refrain totally from all disobediences to Allah ta'ala and to follow His every command. If due to our shortcomings we cannot fulfil every command then the least we should do is to act upon every virtuous thought that Allah ta'ala puts in our hearts and not be misled by Shaytaan into ignoring it.
