To continue, the word fuqara comes in the Holy Quran and we are all aware of this. This faqeeri, faqr, is not just about poverty in wealth. You can say that its understanding can start at understanding our poverty in wealth. So let us start there.
You are as poor and penniless now as you were the day you were born. This is a fact and reality. A faqeer has complete realization of this. You never were a possessor of even a penny, not the day you were born, not now. How can you claim any possession to wealth? You have read countless times "wa mimmaa razaqnaahum..." - every penny you ever received, every penny you have now, its all from Allah swt. He is the sole possessor of it and as a test He has given you the money you have.
Allah swt wants to see how you make your money, will you make money in the way He approves of or in the way He disapproves of? Allah swt wants to see how you then spend that money, in a way He approves of or in a way He disapproves of? Fuqaha have written entire books on Islamic laws pertaining to money aquisition and transactions - making money and spending money is goverened in Islam, you don't have free-will to do as you wish with regards to money. So then tell me if you can't make money how you want nor can you spend it how you want then how is it yours? Its not yours faqeer, you poor person, you don't own a penny to your name, you never did and you never will.
You made a great salary as a businessman, or as a doctor, or as a taxi driver. O Faqeer! You poor person, where did you get the business mind? Did you come out from your mothers womb with a business plan? Where did you get the brains to learn medicine? Where did you get the memory to know the ins and outs of the city and the hand-eye coordination to drive your cab?
O Faqeer! You poor person, Allah gave you the abilities you use to do your earning and make your fortunes otherwise don't forget that you came into this world without even a shirt on your back you are that poor.
Your poverty begins at what you think is your wealth. Your poverty is even further than this.
