Faqr of Ilm

Continuing on, the faqeer now looks over the knowledge he has, all of the things he knows, and he realizes that he is not only poor of wealth and life but that he is also poor of knowledge and at this point he attains gnosis of why the Holy Quran has called man "jahula". He realizes his lot is ignorance.

He was born without any knowledge, he did not know his head from his foot. He would soil his diaper and he had no knowledge of even being filthy and dirty that's how ignorant he was.

Then Al Aleem, the All Knowing, taught him slowely the things he knows. Year by year, stage by stage, he learned new things and increased in his knowledge. He became a doctor, or a lawyer, or a plumber, or an accountant, he became an alim and a mufti, but this all he became - he wasn't born in this condition. Today he is discussing complex physics, he is writing tombs of books, he is reading and writing classical Arabic, he has learned the usool of fiqah and issuing edicts, but just a few years ago he was saying no more than "goo-goo-gaga."

Simply from observing the fact that he has to undergo a process of learning in order to gain knowledge is proof in itself that he possesses no knowledge. He doesn't have knowledge, he is poor of it. Knowledge is given to him from Al Aleem, the All Knowing, He swt possesses knowledge. The faqeer has no knowledge of his own Allah swt grants him the knowledge. He swt is The First, The Last, The Manifest, The Hidden - He has complete and total knowledge of all things.

Previously we discussed how the Faqeer cannot even claim ownership of his own life. We discussed how the Faqeer has lack of wealth and now we see that he has lack of knowledge.

Death, ignorance and not a penny in his ownership - this is the faqeers lot. This is the extent of his faqr, this is his reality, this is his lot. This is why he is a faqeer.
