When I shared my anguish, an elder of mine replied "if taming the nafs was so easy, how good it'd have been....it takes a long time..." for ppl with weak determination like me perhaps still longer...but wheres the reason to worry when the tears of repentance can wipe away even the never-ending expanses of jahannum's fire...and win back Allah swt's love....
hazat maulana Hakeem Akhtar sahab (db) says...a pious saint used to pray to Allah swt to make him such that he doesnt commit any sin at all... after some time, he got a reply from Allah swt "why do you want to have only one door to reach me when I am giving you two!!"...the one door was the door of not committing sin...the other door was that of repenting after committing a sin, with a resolution never to repeat..
a super senior tablighi worker of 75 yrs and who travelled 62 countries in efforts of deen and more than 200 ppl embraced islam with his influence said, "even now my nafs is not in my control....I cant kill it or take it out of myself..because eventually, my nafs is me!"....so you cant kill nafs, you need to tame it, you need to culture it through the company of the pious, dhikr etc as per the advice of the shaykh...some things like getting an automatic hatred for some sin is not in our direct control...it is something that Allah swt gives, we need to sincerely do what is in our control and when He wishes, Allah swt grants us what is good for us...till then we keep walking the path towards Allah swt with as much sincerety as we can, taking precautions and efforts that we can make!!!
