    Default Nafs, Hawa, Dunya, Shaytan

    as salamu `alaykum

    nafs = ego

    hawa = desires/caprice

    dunya = this world

    shaytan = devil

    can anyone give a clear description of these, how they *may* affect our daily lives, by giving examples, and how one differs from the other, or whether they are related...

    Salaam,

    Nafs -- deals with your sense of self (internal diseases such as arrogance, pride, avarice, etc)

    hawa -- is a subspecies of nafs, it deals mainly with appetites and lusts related primarily to stomach and sexual organs.

    dunya -- the appeal to get ahead and gather wealth. Usually manifested in either greed for possessions or fear of losing possessions.

    shaytan -- whispers ideas to the person related to one of the above. He's the weakest of the enemies as he just calls the person to one of the above.
    that's why some say the nafs is worst than 70 shayateen.

    jazakallah for that - it was clear and concise.

    do you have any scholarly articles or links to such articles related to the above four concepts?

    something maybe useful in relation to nafs, by our beloved teacher;

    http://www.abc.se/~m9783/nafs.html

    Dunya, as my local shaykh says, everything in the world is invitation. So in essence, cars, money, jobs, etc, are all inviting us towards the dunya. As there is hadith that states, the heart cannot contain this world and next, it has to be either.

    Note: getting rid of the dunya doesnt mean, go to the desert, caves, it means to use the dunya as like a ladder to get to Allah, not to have love for it..etc.

    Shaytan, the best thing i would say about this is, as shaykh husain abdul sattar said, you have enemies that wait for you an hour, some stay in your house, some in attack you for months, iraq war, some stay for years, but this enemy will never leave you till you die...hmm

    interesting...

    Salaam,

    I don't have articles right on hand, but Shaikh Hamza's book and tape series Purification of the Heart deal with these subjects in their relationship to the diseases that are found in the heart.

    Shaykh Hisham Kabbani said when Nafs and Shaytan get together they have a baby called sin.

    When temptations come together with desires in my opinion you have sin.

    If you remove one or the other you don't have sin. For example when desires are gone they won't listen to temptations - and when temptations are gone desires have nothing to pull them in.

    The root of sin is forgetfulness.
