    Unhappy Why pork is haraam..

Can anyone give me the surah's in the Qur'an which mention pork being haraam? I think that it is something which comes from Judaic law, as kosher and halaal foods are quite similar (in what is halaal and what is kosher) for the most part [n.b., this doesn't mean all are].

    Leviticus 11:7 and Deuteronomy 14:8

And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you.
I've had the... privillege [for lack of a better word...] of hearing about someone who was starving in North Korea, where children are often murdered along with homeless people, and their flesh would be sold on markets, as pork - according to the person who ate it at the time, believed it to be pork as the taste is similar. This is one of the reasons why I think that it may be haraam/unkosher.

While this practise goes on, people fight over things that happened in the past instead of focusing on what's happening now.

    Peace,
    Alitzbha

Pork is not allowed because God says it's not allowed in our belief. Simple as that. Things are not good or bad because of our logic - but because God makes them good or bad to do.

Now the eating of pork has many bad consequences - and this has been scientifically proven.

Pig is extremely bad for you to eat:

Tough break. I still think it has something to do with kosher foods though.

I know of some reasons why pork is bad for you. Most foods which weren't in the Kosher food list were found to have more traces of toxins and whatnot than kosher foods. Same applies for halaal foods, I guess. Pork consumption also gives a greater chance of getting cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis is a chronic disease of the liver in which liver tissue is replaced by connective tissue, resulting in the loss of liver function. Cirrhosis is caused by damage from toxins (including alcohol), metabolic problems, chronic viral hepatitis or other causes.

Cough cough *superstition* cough cough. Sorry I couldn't resist .

But honestly if pork is considered unclean because a great book said it why not believe that cats have 9 lives? Or that if you break a mirror you will receive bad luck.

You know there are reasons why pork was banned at such times. You would most likely die even if you cooked the meat. All religious laws were created for its time when it needed to be there. Adding the whole "Because God, the ruler of the universe, said so" made the command all the more powerful. Certainly religion can be a powerful tool to keep society in balance but it also can opiumize the people . Especially outdates religious laws.

Of course one can look at the West and claim they have no morals because ,many abandoned their abrahamic faith (Christianity) but if we are going to define morals with stuff like eating pork it is not morals anymore.

Personally if I lived at that time and wanted to create a religion I would ban the consumption of non-human apes . No one should ever eat their closest biological cousins.

What really annoys me about this whole pork law is that now Europeans are trying to abolish the term "piggy-bank" because they think it might offend muslims! My God! Might as well kill all pigs on Earth (poor little pigs ).

You really show your knowledge of nutrition if you think that pork is a good meat for you. It is extremely high in fat! EXTREMELY.

Well yea drinking soft drinks can be bad too. Beef can also be very high and fat!

This has nothing to do with nutrition . Pork is not bad for you in moderation, as any other food. Too much pork or beef can be bad. So why isn't beef banned as well?

Pork has had its taboo in the past, not only in middle eastern culture. It can be harmful (although very tasty) if not cooked properly. Many ancient people died and made many people think that pork maybe unclean or evil. Adding God to the taboo only strengthened it.

Definetly. But pork has the most fat.

But anyways yes about the beef this is why `Umar ibn Khattab (radi Allahu `Anhu) said "beware of meat it has addictive properties like wine."

it doesnt have anything to do with kosher laws perse, but the kosher laws came from the same source as our food laws, God. similarities between the laws enforced by different Messengers of God (peace be up them) is not a strange thing.

I'd have expected more people to take a notice of the sentence where I said that pork tastes like humans according to someone who has eaten it.

Silverbackman on piggy banks and the slaughter of pigs.
I think that is kind of silly, I know pork is forbidden in Islam and Judaism (even Rastafari, I think) and some see them as lowly animals, but the idea of banning literature and [ /or ] pictures of them is a stupid act - however, nobody I know seems to have a problem with them. I suppose it's a kind of celf-censorship.

Definitley. Same God, same laws. Peace be upon the messengers.

Definitley true. Meat is soooo tasty. I'd love to be a vegitarian but I don't have the willpower or taste for much else.

    Besides rice.
