    asalamualykum

    what do you guys think about sami yusuf? i really like his songs, i mean he uses instruments and stuff, but his songs are really nice mashaAllah

    coming from what my ears hear, his music is 100% halal

    Its the use of instruments that is the problem here, most scholars do not like this and hence we should refrain from listening to such things.

    Sami Yusuf uses only percussion instruments does he not - similar to Yusuf Islam in that regard - I have heard that this is Mubah (with disagreement) in some of the Madhahib.

    as salamu alaykum

    the most lenient position is that if the music is not a distraction from Allah (and Sami Yusuf's is generally a reminder of Allah and rasul), it is permissible.

    as such, we should not condemn what there is difference of opinion on - and certainly his lyrics are extremely beneficial if a young/new Muslim were to listen to them.

    in the Indian subcontinent, there are lots of religious music which the scholars do not condemn.... however, usually its not listened to in the mosque.

    I personally do not know of any subcontinental scholar that allows music. There are many of the smaller sufi orders however that have musical qawwaali mahafil but these kinds of groups are usually people who think they know the "inner realities" of everything.

    they actually have musical qawwaalis? i heard a qawwaali at the algillani site but didn't have any music at all in. There was a video from baghdad, that had duff though.
