    Default Differences in the Madhabs

    Salam,

I'm new to Islam. I'm just wondering if any of you would be so kind as to tell me what the major ideological differences are between the Madhabs: Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali, and Maliki. Also, if you could tell me why you chose yours I would be grateful. Thank you very much

    Salam Bro,

Firstly, there are no idological differances in terms of belife.

Secondly, when the text is clear there is no need to follow an imam. e.g. five daily prayers. (some have mentioned that 90 per cent of the time everyone agrees)

only where there is no clear guidance that you see scholars varying in some cases.

Thirdly, read: The legal status for following a Madhab. by Mufti Taqi. (though it may be quite complexed in some places).

I'm sure there are other books too.

but best thing to do would be to ask a local scholar to make things clear.

with regards to following a paticular school, it really depends on the madhab of the scholars around one self.

it woul be difficult to find the answers if the scholars around you did not know the other schools of thought in depth (meaning the correct opinion that was adopted by the later scholars)

And may Allah guide us all. Ameen

the madhabs really don have any 'ideological' differences since we are all muslims. the differences are in jurisprudence. they each have their own method of approaching the Qur'an and the Sunnah to derive laws. they agree on most matters though and they are all a valid path by consensus, so if one is maliki, it doesnt mean he thinks the other madhabs are bad or anything.

most muslims follow the madhab of their community. i suggest you do that aswell. it will make things easier.

    Asalaamu 'alaykum,

I was advised to choose the madhaab that you have the easiest access to, meaning, the one your local 'ulema follow. That makes it easier to learn your basic fiqh and also to obtain rulings for different issues related to you.

I totally agree with Travelleress' reply.
That is the best thing to do and the easiest and fastest way to learn. Choose the madhab followed in your local masjid in order make things less difficult upon you.
