Default Quran and sunnah/Quran and alhul bayt?

    Assalamu Alaikum,

My understanding is one of the things that the Prophet salallahu alaihe wasalam said in his last sermon and also on some other occassion was:

'I leave the Quran and sunnah for my ummah' (words to that effect)
Could someone please provide some references as to which hadith this has reported in? Jazakallah khair.

Why do some people say the Prophet salallahu alaihe wasalam said 'I leave the Quran and Ahlul Bayt?' What are their sources when they suggest this?

    Assalamu Alaikum.

This is valid in Sunni Islam. Both narrations are valid and strong. Qur'an and Ahlul Bayt and Qur'an and my Sunnah.

It means we follow his Qur'an and his Sunnah (and even those such as Shaykh Ninowy who said that the hadith "Qur'an and my Sunnah" is weak said that it doesn't matter because the Qur'an says to follow the Sunnah thus whoever doesn't follow the Sunnah is not following the Qur'an!) and also that we be good and love Ahlul Bayt and we respect them as long as they are believers.

If we respect, love, and be good to Ahlul Bayt - Allah will give us barakah in our lives and our societies.

He left us with his Sunnah to follow,
He left us with his Ahlul Bayt to take care of them through respect, love and goodness.

    Wa Bi Allahi Tawfiq.

    i agree brother,
i am sunni but that doesnt mean that i seclude the ahlul bayt from the sunnah as they spent most time with the prophet..and provide us with many sahih ahadith....the ahlul bayt are part of the sunnah....

For more information answering your question.

First Shaykh Abu Qanit al-Sharif al-Hassani (hafizahullah) a member of Ahlul Bayt himself from (Guidinghelper.com):

    > I had a question regarding the Ahlul Sunnah's view of the Ahlul Bayt.
    >
    > What has been the Sunni understanding of the hadith:
    >
    > "I have left you 2 weighty things; the Book of Allah and my descendents
    > ("itrah"). Both of these will not be separated from each other until the
    > Day of Judgement."?

The Sunni scholar Muhammad `Abd al-Rahman al-Mubarkufuri says in his
Book Tuhfah al-Ahwadhi bi Sharh al-Tirmidhi for this
hadith (a narration of which is found in Tirmidhi, hadith #3718):

The meaning of sticking to them (i.e. the Prophet's family) is that one should
love them, respect them, act according to their [authentic] narrations, and depend
upon the statements of [the authorized scholars among] them. *All of this does not
negate taking `ilm from other than them* as the Prophet (May Allah bless him and
give him peace) has also said, "My Companions are like guiding stars, whichever
one you follow, you will become rightly guided."

    [end quote]

    > Does this not justify the Shia position of taking the deen from the Ahlul Bayt?

No, as their position is one of unjust discrimination and our Prophet (May Allah
bless him and give him peace) did not endorse such unjust discrimination. Additionally,
we, personally, would be very sad if Imam Malik or his student Ibn Qasim (none of
whom was part of the Prophet's family) were not allowed to teach and transmit the din
as if it were not for these two people and also Sahnun, this great coherent madh-hab
al-maliki would never have reached us.

Everybody should be given an equal chance and those who are truly gifted will
outshine others by the will and decree of Allah. .

Also, their view is not backed up the actions of Ja`far as-Sadiq on his death bed
as narrated by Ibn Rushd al-Kabir (See entry #9 of the Notes of Sources) - who
specifically appointed a non-descendent (i.e. Malik ibn Anas) as a successor to him.

And then, we have hadith which talk about "bad people" who will be from the
    Prophet's family, such as:

The Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace) responded to a question
about the fitnas at the end of the world saying, "The Fitna of Ahlas is the trial of
being forced to flee and the trial of war. Then after this, the Fitna of Exultant
[unbridled] Joy (sarraa') will issue from the two feet of a man from *my household*
(ahlu bayti). He will claim to be from me (i.e. represent me), but he will not
be from me (i.e. he will not truly represent me). The real people who are close to
me (awliya'i) are those who practice taqwa [i.e. performing acts of obedience and
avoiding acts of disobedience - along with continuous tawbah]. ...

    [{Abu Dawud, al-fitan wa l-malahim, dhikr al-fitan wa dala'iliha hadith #3704}]

What we can learn from this hadith coupled with the first one is that following/imitating
the Prophet's family is conditional on their uprightness.

As for loving and respecting the Prophet's family, the scholars say that one is obliged
to love them even if they are not people of taqwa (as long as they are believers)
    [due to the verse:

Say: I do not ask from you any fee (ajran) except for love of
    the[/my] close relatives. [{al-Qur'an 42:23}]

Thus, loving the Prophet's household is a wajib duty on us according to the
the vast majority of the mufassirin of this ayah.].

Secondly from another big Ahlul Bayt Sunni Scholar named Shaykh Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Ninowy in his "Satisfying the Need" translation of al-`Aqeedah al-Tahawiyah availible on www.alhaqq.net:

1- Ahlul Bayt: are especially "Ahlul Qisa'a", and their descendants (alaihum assalam).
Allah said in Surat Al-Ahzab, Ayah 33 :

انما يريد الله ليذهب عنكم الرجس اهل البيت ويطهركم تطهيرا

This Ayah means: (Allah only wants to remove all abonation from you, you members of the household , and to make you pure and honorable.) They are called Ahlul Qisa'a, because according to the Hadeeth Saheeh narrated by (Imam Muslim in his Saheeh 2424, 4/1883 by way of Aisha, and by Imam At-tirmithiy in his Saheeh #3787, 5/663 by way of amro bin abi salama, and by Imam Ahmad in his "musnad" 6/292,298,304 by way of urn salama, and by Imam Tabarani 3/54, and by Imam Al Hakem 3/147, and by Imam Ibn Habban 15/433 and by Imam Al Bayhaqi 2/152, and by many others.) when this Ayah was revealed " the Prophet was in Ummu Salama's house, he, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. called Fatima, Hasan and Husayn in front of him, and Imam All behind him, then he covered them all with apiece of clothes and said; O'Allah, these are the members of my family, O'Allah remove all their abonation and make them pure and honorable. Then, Ummu Salama, may Allah be pleased with her, said: can I come with them O' Prophet of Allah. The Prophet replied: you stay where you are at, and you are deemed to goodness. " Thus, Ahlul Bait, are sayyidina Ali, the Lady Fatima, Hasan, Husayn and their descendents including Aal Ali, Aal Ja'far, Aal Aqeel, Aal Abbas and their offspring.

*It is important to love Ahlul Bayt, respect them, support them and be loyal to them, may Allah honor them. Allah said in Surat Ash-Shura, Ayah 23:

قل لا اسالكم عليه اجرا الا المودة في القربى

This Ayah means: (say; No reward do I ask of you for this, except love for those near of kin.)
Imam Muslim, narrated in his Saheeh #2408, vol.4/187 3 among others by way of Zayd bin Arqam, may Allah be pleased with him, that " the Prophet stood one day preaching us near a spring of water called khum, located between Macca and Madina. the Prophet praised Allah and preached then he said: thereafter, o'you people, I am human awaiting the messenger of my Lord, and I am leaving you with two heavy responsibilities; the first one is the book of Allah, practice it and hold tight to it. The Prophet then urged the people to rely on the book of Allah, then said: and Ahla Baity, <I am asking you> by Allah to remember <take care of> Ahla Baity and he repeated this sentence three times." Please note, that some people are using an alleged Hadeeth (that I am leaving you with the book of Allah and my Sunnah.) Please be advised that this Hadeeth is extremely weak. Moreover, many leading scholars of Hadeeth have declared it as fabricated. The later Hadeeth that contains (my Sunnah) is narrated by Al Hakem in his "Mustadrak" by way of Ibn abi owais by way of his father by way of thawr by way of Zayd through Ikrima, through ibn abbas, however, ibn abi owais and his father are unreliable people and fabricators. See "tahtheeb al kamal" 3/127 by Imam Hafez Mizzy, and "Sharhh saheeh Al Bukhari" intro/391 by Imam Hafez Inb Hajr, also Imam Nasaaiy was among other scholars to denounce those narrators describing them as " weak and unreliable", similarly did Abu Hatem Arrazy in his book "aljarhh wat ta'deel in Elm Al hadeeth", others who also mentioned their unreliability are Llakaiy, Assideeq, Ibn Mueen, Ibn Habban,. ....etc. Even Imam Al Hakem himself who mentioned this hadeeth in his book, after he added another weak route to it, declared this Hadeeth immediately as a weak Hadeeth and admitted it's great weakness.

(P.S. some ignorants, innovators and devious people believe that the purpose of this latter saheeh hadeeth narrated by Imam Muslim which clearly indicating the authority of Ahlul Bayt, nullifies the Sunnah!!!. Let it be known, that following the Sunnah is mandated by the Quran. Allah said in surat An-Nisa’a, ayah 80:

من يطع الرسول فقد اطاع الله

which means: “whosoever obeyed the Prophet, obeyed Allah”.

Also Allah Ta’ala said in Surat Al-Hash’r ayah 7:

وما اتاكم الرسول فخذوه وما نهاكم عنه فانتهوا

This ayah clearly states the essential role of the Sunnah, and it says; “ whatever the prophet gives, shows, or command you, then do. And whatever he forbade, then avoid.”

There are a lot more verses to prove the instrumental role of the sunnah.

The meaning of the saheeh hadeeth narrated by imam Muslim and others, is an indication of what the Prophet, Sall Allahu alayhi wa Aalihi wa sallam, clearly commanded us to do, and that is to hold on tight and follow the Honorable Qur’an, and to follow the footsteps of members of the descendants of the Prophet who are known for piety, knowledge, and strict adherence and following to the Sunnah of their grandfathers.

Following this saheeh hadeeth is following the Sunnah. Hypocrites (munafiqeen) and their followers seek to eliminate Ahlul Bayt and their role, to alter the ahadeeth of the Prophet about them, and to forge and fabricate information to isolate them, despite, clear and repetitive commands of the Prophet not to do so.)

Hadith Al-Thaqalayn: The Shia Will Perish

The Shia love to quote Hadith Al-Thaqalayn (the two precious things). It is a central part of the Shia attack upon orthodox (Sunni) Islaam, and the foundation pillar of Shi'ism. The Hadith is considered Mutawattir by the Shia, meaning that it has been narrated so many times and in so many different places that there can be no doubt about its authenticity. Here is Hadith Al-Thaqalayn:
    .
The Prophet (s) said: "Verily, I leave behind two precious things amongst you: the Book of Allah and my Ahlul Bayt. Verily, the two will never separate until they come back to me by the side of the Pond."
    .
In another narration, the Prophet (s) said: "Lo, O people, I am only a human being and I am about to respond to the messenger of my Lord [i.e. the call of death]. I am leaving behind two precious things (thaqalayn) among you. The first of the two is the Book of Allah. In it is guidance and light. So get hold of the Book of Allah and adhere to it. And my Ahlul* Bayt. I urge you to remember Allah regarding my Ahlul Bayt. I urge you to remember Allah regarding my Ahlul Bayt. I urge you to remember Allah regarding my Ahlul *Bayt."
    .
The irony is that Hadith Al-Thaqalayn is actually the damnation of the Shia sect, so we wonder why the Shia love to quote it in discussions with the orthodox (Sunni) Muslims. The dictionary definition of the word "Ahlul Bayt" is:
    .
Ahlul Bayt: n, literally translates to "People of the House" and refers to the wife or wives of a man as well as anyone else living in his house including unmarried children
    .
In Hadith Al-Thaqalyn, the Prophet (s) repeatedly says "MY Ahlul Bayt" and NOT the Ahlul Bayt of Hadrat Ali. Notice how he (s) repeats it three times and says repsect MY Ahlul Bayt and please take care of them. Why would he (s) ask of this for the Ahlul Bayt of Ali (ra) since Ali (ra) is not dying? The Prophet (s) knew he was dying, so he (s) wanted everyone to take care of HIS Ahlul Bayt once he left this world.
    .
Who is the Ahlul Bayt of the Prophet (s) other than Bibi Aisha, Bibi Hafsa, and the other wives of the Prophet? Yes, Bibi Fatima, Hasan (ra) and Hussain (ra) are the Ahlul Bayt of Hadrat Ali, but are they the Ahlul Bayt of the Prophet? No, not by the dictionary definition of the word, since none of them lived under the same roof as the Prophet. Yes, all of these are HONORARY members of Ahlul Bayt just like Salman Al-Farsi (ra) is. But even the Shia say that the Hadith Al-Thaqalayn does not refer to honorary members but rather it refers to the actual Ahlul Bayt.
    .
How long can the Shia hide behind a false definition of a word such as "Ahlul Bayt?" How long can they lie about the meaning of a common word that is used and known by Arabs to mean one and only one thing: namely the wives and children of a man? It is mind-boggling that the Shia thumps his chest yelling about his love for Ahlul Bayt and yet he doesn't even know who Ahlul Bayt is.
    .
When the Prophet (s) was growing sick and was about to die, he (s) was worried about people harming two things: the Quran and his wives. He (s) warned the Sahabah to take care of the Quran; the Quran was as of yet not compiled in one book, and so this duty was upto the Muslims that lived past the Prophet to do this task. Indeed, it would be none other than the first three Caliphs who would fulfill the first part of this Hadith, caring for the Quran. Caliph Abu Bakr (ra) began the process of compiling and preserving the Quran in one Mushaf, and this under the advice from Umar Bin Khattab. The final compilation took place during Caliph Uthman's rule in which the key Mushaf was placed in the residence of Bibi Hafsa, the Prophet's widow. Despite the fact that these peopel were the ones to fulfill the first part of Hadith Al-Thaqalayn, the Shia today revile Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Bibi Hafsa. So are the Shia really followers of the Hadith Al-Thaqalayn when they scorn the people who fulfilled it?
    .
The Prophet (s) was also worried about the fate of his Ahlul Bayt, namely his wives. He (s) called this to be the "Little Thaql" compared to the Quran which was the "Big Thaql." Indeed, this entire Hadith was the Prophet's way of comparing how precious his wives are, and how he implored upon the people to take care of them just like they would the Quran. The Prophet (s) had so much Gheerah (protective jealousy) for his wives that he (s) did not want anyone else to marry them after his death, so he (s) entrusted the care of his wives on the Ummah instead of having them re-marry. The Prophet (s) was so dear to Allah Almighty, that Allah even revealed a verse on this matter of respecting his wives and not entering the Prophet's house so as not to see his wives whom the Prophet (s) adored and had extreme Gheerah towards:
"O You who believe! Enter not the dwellings of the Prophet for a meal without waiting for the proper time, unless permission be granted you. But if you are invited, enter, and, when your meal is ended, then disperse. Linger not for conversation. Lo! that would cause annoyance to the Prophet, and he would be shy of (asking) you (to go); but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask of them (the wives of the Prophet) anything, ask it of them from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not for you to cause annoyance to the messenger of Allah, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him. Lo! that would be grevious in the Sight of Allah." (Quran, 33:53)
Allah thereby forbade marrying the wives of the Prophet after his death, even though this is contrary to the Shariah for every other man's widows. This is how important it is to respect the Prophet's wives.
    .
All the believers were instructed to care for the Prophet's wives, and even Allah bestowed the title of "Mother of the Believers" (Umm Al Mumineen) to them: "The Prophet is closer to the believers than their ownselves, and his wives are their mothers." (Quran, 33:6) And Allah says about caring for one's mother in old age: “Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them a word of disrespect, or scold them, but say a generous word to them. And act humbly to them in mercy, and say, 'My Lord, have mercy on them'” (Quran, 17: 23-24)
    .
In fact, Allah Almighty raised the status of the Prophet's Wives above all other women on earth: "You wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women!" (Quran, 33:32) In verse 33:32-33, Allah Almighty declares them to be Ahlul Bayt and that He wants to purify them:
    .
"O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other of the women; If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in your speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn; and speak a good word. And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, you Ahlul Bayt, and to make you pure and spotless." (Quran, 33:32-33)
    .
So the wives of the Prophet (s) are to be honored like our mothers, and we should not cause injury to them because this would cause annoyance to the Prophet (s) himself. And the Ummah is entrusted with caring for them after his death. The Prophet (s) was so worried about his wives that he even likened them to the Quran, meaning that they were this precious to him! All reliable reports indicate that the Prophet (s) especially emphasized this saying about the two weighty things (Thaqalayn) when he (s) was talking to the people of Medinah, because this is where his wives resided. As an honor to the man who risked his life for the Ummah, can we not at least protect the honor of his wives, his Ahlul Bayt???
    .
Is this what the Shia are doing? Have they protected the honor of Bibi Aisha or Bibi Hafsa? The entire Shia faith is based upon slander against Bibi Aisha. During the Prophet's sickness, Bibi Aisha (ra) told everyone that he (s) had selected Abu Bakr (ra) to be the Imam of the prayers in his place. Aisha (ra) said that Abu Bakr (ra) was the Imam in place of the Prophet (s) and NOT Hadrat Ali. The very central foundation of Shia faith is that this was a lie by Bibi Aisha (ra) and that the Prophet (s) had actually told her that Ali (ra) should be the Imam. It is based upon this supposed lie that the Shia say that the first Caliph should have been Hadrat Ali.
    .
The Shia further state that Bibi Aisha (ra) lied to the world by not telling them the true last words of the Prophet, which were that supposedly he (s) appointed Ali (ra) to be his heir apparent. The Shia say that anyone who denies the Imamah of the Infallible Imam becomes a Kaafir. It is thus that they declare the Ahlul Bayt (i.e. Bibi Aisha) to be Kaafir. The Shia say that Bibi Aisha (ra) fabricated Hadith about how the Prophet (s) praised Abu Bakr (ra) as the next best after the Prophet, thereby aiding him in becoming the first Caliph and usurping the rule of Hadrat Ali. Click here to see what else the Shia say about Bibi Aisha. Oftentimes, the Shia will do Taqiyya and hide their hatred of the Prophet's wives, but even the most tolerant of the Shia MUST say that Aisha (ra) is a liar who lied about how the Prophet (s) appointed Abu Bakr (ra) as Imam instead of Hadrat Ali. There is no way out of this for the Shia, because if Bibi Aisha (ra) told the truth about this, then suddenly the Shia faith topples since Ali (ra) is not appointed to be Imam if we accept the words of Bibi Aisha. So either Abu Bakr (ra ) is the rightful Caliph, or Bibi Aisha (ra) is a liar. There is no other possibility.
    .
The Shia dishonor the Prophet's Ahlul Bayt; they praise and exalt the status of Hadrat Ali's Ahlul Bayt, but they dishonor and disparage the Prophet's, yet another indication of how the Shia have raised the status of Ali (ra) and the Imams above that of Muhammad (s) and the Prophets. It is thus that the Prophet's fears are confirmed, that people would hurt his wives, and this is what the Shia do. In fact, many of the Shia curse the wives of the Prophet, and indeed some narrations of Hadith Al-Thaqalayn warn against this: ."..my Ahl al*Bayt, who are the second thaql (precious thing). So don't curse them ( fa la tasubbuhum), for then you shall perish."
    .
History tells us that it is the Shia who curse Bibi Aisha. Shah Ismail I, the father of Shi'ism in Iran, forced his servants to publically curse the first three Caliphs and Bibi Aisha. In fact, just go to Shia-Chat, search the word "Aisha" there, and you will find page after page of the Shia cursing Bibi Aisha. What will be the end result of these Shia except that they will perish!? The Prophet (s) said: "Learn some of your deen from this red haired lady [Aisha]." And you will see that the Shia reject all Hadith from Bibi Aisha, calling her a liar and a fabricator of Hadith. Bibi Aisha (ra) is one of the core scholars of orthodox (Sunni) Islaam, one of the most respected Aalimahs of history who narrated over 2,000 Hadith. (You will see the Shia scoff at this line, and slandering her in their hearts by calling her an overeager Hadith fabricator, Nauzobillah!)
    .
The Shia have even changed the meaning of Ahlul Bayt to throw Aisha (ra) out of it. The Prophet (s) honored Ali (ra) and Salman Al-Farsi (ra) by calling them to be part of Ahlul Bayt, honorary members of it. And suddenly the Shia use this as an excuse to dismember the REAL Ahlul Bayt. Subhanallah! What will be the end result of these Shia except that they will perish? Hadith Al-Thaqalayn in many narrations says to stay emotionally attached to the Ahlul Bayt, and the Quran says we should love them like we love our mothers.
    .
Indeed, the Shia have abandoned both the Quran and the Ahlul Bayt. Why do they not use the first Thaql to see who is part of the second Thaql? The Quran itself addresses the wives of the Prophet as Ahlul Bayt, in verse 33:32-33. Where does the Quran address Ali (ra) as part of Ahlul Bayt? Where does the Quran address the so-called 12 Infallible Imams as Ahlul Bayt? Where in the Quran is this imaginary naked kid hiding in a cave whom they call the Mehdi?
    .
The Shia have thrown the Quran behind their backs. They believe in Tahreef (tampering) of the Quran. The Shia Ulema deny this today, even though Tahreef was narrated in SO many traditions in Al-Kafi that the scholars had to admit that they cannot all be fabricated. Furthermore, the vast majority of Shia scholars today believe tha the Quran has been tampered with by the Sahabah, who supposedly arragned the verses of the Quran in a misleading fashion thereby changing its meaning. The Shia scholars of today say with one end of their mouth that they don't believe in Tahreef of the Quran, but with the other side of their mouth they say that verse 33:33 was placed deliberately next to the verse about the Prophet's wives, just to change its meaning by the evil Sahaba! How can the Shia claim that they don't believe in Tahreef when they admit it themselves? Observe what ************* says: "...it is quite possible that the 'purification verse' concerning the People of the House was revealed separately and then, when the verses of the Qur'an were being assembled, was placed in the middle of the verses relating to the wives of the Prophet, either in error or deliberately." (Lesson 19, http://www.*************/leadership/ ) This quote is from Ayatollah Allamah Sharaf al-Din. And this opinion is held by a majority of the Shia scholars. After all, how else can they boot Bibi Aisha (ra) out of Ahlul Bayt?
    .
The Shia have abandoned the Ahlul Bayt of the Prophet, and instead exalted the Ahlul Bayt of Hadrat Ali. We orthodox Muslims love the Ahlul Bayt of Ali (ra) but we do not support how the Shia exalt them so much and use this to demote the Ahlul Bayt of the Prophet. They accuse Bibi Aisha (ra) of vile things and of hurting Ali's Ahlul Bayt. We ask these Shia to remember that the Prophet (s) commanded them to care for Bibi Aisha, and the Quran warned the believers not to injure the Prophet by causing insult to his wives.
    .
Today, the orthodox (Sunni) Muslims are the ones who have upheld the protection of the Quran and the protection of the Ahlul Bayt, the Prophet's Wives. We vigorously condemn anyone who insults the integrity of the Quran or the integrity of the Prophet's Wives. We are thus the people who have fulfilled Hadith Al-Thaqalayn. Meanwhile, the entire Shia faith is based on the violation of the Thaqalayn; the Shia believe that verses have been misplaced in the Quran, and they believe that the Ahlul Bayt (Aisha) lied about the fact that it was Abu Bakr (ra) to be the Prophet's replacement Imam and NOT Hadrat Ali. There is no way around this Hadith for the Shia.

Jazakallah khair for your responses, has clarified some issues.
In the Hereafter a terrible punishment awaits you but also forgiveness from Allah swt and His good pleasure. The life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion. (Surah al-Hadid: 20)
