What is the ranking of the four madhabs in order from the strictest to the most liberal? I thought it was Hanbali, Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi.

lol it's not about strict and liberal it's about usool al-fiqh.
Anyways the Hanafi madhab is definetly the hardest, then the Hanbali, then the Shafi`i, and the BEST being the Malikis!!
If you gave me a million dollars I wouldn't be Hanafi lol.

lol What makes the Hanafi the hardest? Everything I have read online always says that Hanbali is the hardest. And many websites say Hanafi is the most liberal socially.Originally Posted by Omar HH

The Hanafis say that any act that does not benefit you in dunya or akhirah is makruh tahriman (i.e. haram) and that it is sinful.
That alone makes Hanafi hardest.
Hanafi MAKES you pray the Sunnah prayers, grow a fist long beard, have pants above the ankles, goto the Masjid to pray if you do not have a valid excuse, does not let you eat alot of sea food, etc. etc. etc.
The Maliki madhab is the best Sidi`Amal Ahlul Madina!
Wassalam.

It depends on which scholars you follow in that particular madhab and you also need to define what "liberal" or "modern" is.
And if he were to ask for a gentle lady in marriage, he would be refused, and when he leaves the world it does not miss him, and if he goes out, his going out is not noticed, and if he falls sick, he is not attended to, and if he dies, he is not accompanied to his grave.

Just to clarify sidi, the size of a fistful is not defined precisely in the Hanafi school. Please see this Q&A for more infoOriginally Posted by Omar HH

Well I just meant like the things that Omar mentioned. The ratings of different things like maybe one madhab says this act is haram and another says makruh.Originally Posted by Ansari

Wow I didn't know all that. I am bothered that I can't find much info on the internet about the differences between the madhabs. Especially the Hanbali madhab. Do any of the schools say you have to dress like the Prophet(saw) did like wear traditional clothing? And whats the difference between the schools regarding the rules of hijab, niqab?Originally Posted by Omar HH

What does it mean to not benefit you in this life? What would be classified as something that can benefit and something that doesnt? Like making money compared to playing a game?Originally Posted by Omar HH

The Hanafis wouldn't let you play a game.
(Malikis say Makruh [another stricter Maliki view is haram])!
