    Asalaamu ‘alaykum,

Alhamdu lillah I listened to the lecture online – very beneficial masha Allah.
The Shaykh was trying to get across the way the Sahaba loved the Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, – a love like no other, a love that cannot be understood and a love that cannot be matched.

Here are some notes that I made, there are a few gaps:

One of the people of Quraysh, when asked about the Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, said:
“Never have I seen any group of people, loving and cherishing their leader as the companions of Muhammad, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, adore him. When he speaks there is total silence, when he whispers a command they strain to hear and vie with each other to fulfil it, when he spits they catch his saliva and anoint their face and body.

Such stories are dismissed as the accounts of a few mad men, but we are talking about the most enlightened people to ever grace the earth.

The marriages of the Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, were a miracle in themselves because it is easy for a man to put on a show outside the house- everyone can put on their own persona. But at home it is the family that really know the person and the wives of the Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, really knew him. A husband and wife have a special (meaning especially close) relationship; despite the wives having a special relationship with the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam not one of them related anything that was in contradiction with his persona outside

When they would address him, even as wives, they wouldn’t address him as 'Muhammad' they would say (every single time) “May my father and my mother be sacrificed for your sake, oh Allah’s Messenger…”

    Allahu Akbar

We cannot dismiss this as fanaticism because they truly loved him- the wives of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam would collect his sweat and store it in bottles as perfume

    The Shaykh relates another incident:
During the battle of Uhud many men were slain and many had been wounded. The Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam had also been injured.
There was a sahabiyya who came out of her home and went to meet the Companions that were returning from battle. The following conversation is related:
Sahabiyya: How is RasoolAllah salAllahu alayhi wasallam?
A companion answered: Sadly, your father has been martyred.
Sahabiyya: inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, but how is RasoolAllah salAllahu alayhi wasallam?
Companion: your husband has also been martyred.
Sahabiyya: inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, but how is rasoolAllah salAllahu alayhi wasallam?
Companion: your son has been slain too.
Sahabiyya: inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, but how is RasoolAllah salAllahu alayhi wasallam?
Companion: your brother has been martyred.
Sahabiyya: inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, but how is rasoolAllah salAllahu alayhi wasallam?
Finally, she was told that the prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam was well.
However, still she answered, “By Allah, my eyes will not rest until I see him. “ And so she went to see the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. She entered his room and upon seeing him said “Every calamity every misfortune has been lightened now that I have seen u oh RasoolAllah salAllahu alayhi wasallam.”

The Shaykh said that we are now living in a day and age where nothing is sacred or sacrosanct, where many believe that we are descendants of apes and are just advanced animals - we all just came about by chance. The only way we have got so far is by fighting for survival - only the fittest n fastest survive. So, in order to secure your own happiness you have to make others miserable.

Many people either believe in this principle, or unknowingly, we can act it out. If we have that kind of mentality we will never be able understand the lofty and divine concept of loving Allah and His Messenger.

However, when we talk about love for Allah we don’t mean a simple phrase – “I love you”, “We are best friends” etc. etc. We mean a real, sincere love. It is easy fro us to say “I love the Prophet” but true love was demonstrated by the Sahaba - read their stories, read of the sacrifices they made.

One of the Sahaba was being tortured before he was to be executed. It was said to him “Don’t you wish that today, now, you were free and Muhammad was in your place.” Even under this torture and even though this particular companion had not not spent much time with the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, he said “By Allah, I would not even be able to tolerate a thorn that would prick the foot of the Prophet.”

Allah removed the veil from the eyes of the Sahaba so they could see the true beauty of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. When they saw him, they knew he was no ordinary man.

The Shaykh emphasised that even if we could have only a portion of that love only then could we become true believers. Because love does amazing things.

When you love someone and you are consumed by love - life is about love. There are servants Allah who above everything love Allah and His Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

When a man and a woman love each other, if it sincere love, they will give up everything for each other – even if it is a ‘worldly love.’ This is how we can understand how Sahaba loved the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam and so were able to give up everything for him.

The Shaykh said that we too can work towards gaining that love by making sacrifices for it. How does that love translate into ones life?

This is something that non-Muslims do not understand: the relationship between the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam and the believers. This is why with the current controversy some non-Muslims could not understand the Muslim reaction.

Although, the Shaykh pointed out here, that others knew exactly what would happen – this act was not done in naivety. They knew what was going to happen because they saw the same thing happen with Salman Rushdie.

But, maybe some people do not understand – why are Muslims so offended?
Because to us, he is no abstract. historical, absent figure; to us he is a part of our everyday lives, His name is on our lips, his memory in our hearts, he is on our minds; we try to adorn our self with his actions; we try to adopt his habits, talk as he talked, walk as he walked, worship as he worshipped, eat as he ate.
Which other figure is there in the world who can compare?

He commands undisputable sway in hearts of believers – today and till the Day of Judgment. The very mention of his name brings tears to our eyes.

His life was no secret; we know everything about him – because there was nothing bad about him, nothing hidden.

His wives related his most private times to us when he was in prayer to his Lord.

Maymaunah, the wife of Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, was the aunty of Abdallah ibn Abbas. Ibn Abbas once asked Aunty to ask Prophet if he could spend a night with him in the house (in order to observe his actions). The Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam said yes. So, Ibn Abbas came and slept with the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam (he was a child at the time).

During the night the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam rose, Ibn Abbas rose with him and he watched him. The Prophet turned to the heavens and recited Surat Al-Kauthar and Ibn Abbas did the same. The Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam went to relieve himself and Ibn Abbas followed him. Then, the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam did wudu and Ibn Abbas did same. They both stood for tahajjud together.

Ibn Abbas observed everything and through this the Ummah came to know about it.

So those of us who wake up in the morning they do so as a Sunnah of the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. We hear the adhaan at this serene hour of morning and we hear his name, and also in the iqamah, in tilawat, in tashahud and after salah. This goes on throughout the day- fajr, duhr, asar, maghrib, esha, throughout the day his name is in our ears and on our lips.

The Shaykh gave the meaning of an Ayah in the Qur’an:
Allah says [meaning of]:”And we have elevated the mention of your name.”
One day Jibrail came to our Beloved salAllahu alayhi wasallam and asked, “Do u know what Allah means by this verse?”
    Our Habib replied, “No,”
Jibrail replied, “Allah has taken as a duty upon himself that whenever His name is mentioned, your name is mentioned alongside it.”
And so it is, when we hear the Adhaan, Iqamah, Kalima etc. we hear Allah’s Name and we hear the name of our Prophet Muhammad salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

So this is why Prophet is no abstract figure - he is part of us. An attack in him is an attack on every one of us - on our heats, on our belief, on our character. He lives in us, in a very spiritual vibrant way. People may not understand it, but this is the life of a Muslim

The Shaykh said there so much to say and to learn to learn about him salAllahu alayhi wasallam.

The Shaykh then went to talk about the issue of the cartoons.

He asked the gathering: is there anyone that believes that is about freedom of expression? (I’m assuming nobody said yes).
He said that this is an attack on the symbols of Islam, the figures in Islam. There is clear hypocrisy on display here- not jus double standards, but multiple standards. Ken Livingstone has been suspended for a month, proportionately he has more votes then the prime minister (in his constituency) and he has been suspended for 1 comment that even many commentators say can be interpreted in other ways. What has that journalist's religion got to do with that comment??? Where’s the freedom of expression? David Irving gets jailed for a comment he made over 10 years ago. If you anything about Jews, even if it’s not explicit, it is anti-Semitic. Islam is criticised daily: there are many academic who r dissecting Islamic sources to arrive at their own interpretations but people don’t complain - because that’s genuine debate - sometimes it is still abusive and blasphemous. But these cartoons are just grotesque; they knew what they were doing. People have died over this – nobody is laughing - this is no joke.

Allah says [meaning of]: 'You will surely hear much abuse from those given the book before you and the idolaters…”

    The Shaykh related an incident:
The Prophet, salAllahu alayhi wasallam, was seated in the shade of one of the homes of one of wives with the Sahaba. He said “Soon some people will come and look at you with two eyes of the shaytan but do not say anything.” A short while later a blue eyed person came by with some others and the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam, said 'Why do u abuse me and vilify me?” At once they all became to swear to Allah that they didn’t abuse the Prophet. The Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam did not say anything and took their word for it and so they went away. This is what the Prophet would do - he would leave them n ignore them. This was the nature of the prophet, he would trust others. The Shaykh said that the believer is a trusting person and always sees good in others, unlike the evil person who himself is evil and se sees evil in others. “We see a reflection of others in ourselves and we see ourselves in others.”

Afterwards, Allah revealed an ayah where Allah mentions them and defends the Prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam – because Allah always defended the prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam. Those who challenge Allah and His Messenger are lowly n despicable; Allah has decreed that “I and My Messenger will triumph.”

Of course, history has shown this to us. Those who vilified the prophet salAllahu alayhi wasallam and spoke ill of him met a doomed end and Allah takes this upon himself. Allah will not tolerate this and sooner or later Allah will bring His Punishment because Allah loves the Messengers.

    Allahumma salli ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammad.
