    Default Definition of Ibadah

    As Salamu Alaikum

Can somebody give me a definition of Ibadah?
When is an action a Ibadah? What is Ibadah exactly? What are the sayings of the Ahlu Sunnah scholars?

    As Salamu Alaikum

I wonder if someone can present an analysis of how scholars of different sciences interpreted 'ibadah'. For example, comparing what the linguists said with what the fuqaha have said.

I'd also like to know if the Salafi definition of ibadah, which seems rather broad to include virtually all 'religious' actions, is an acceptable interpretation.

Maybe the scholars here can look it up in the dictionaries?

    I found the following quote:

‘ibadah in the language of the Arabs is what the linguists defined.

The famous linguist, Imam az-Zajjaj defined it by saying: al ‘ibadah in the language of the Arabs is obedience with subjugation.

In "Mufradat-ul-Qur'an" the Linguist, Imam Abul-Qasim ar-Raghib al-'Asbahani said: al ‘ibadah is the ultimate humbleness.

Imam al-Zarqani said in his book Manahil al-Irfan: 'Our Scholars agreed that if a word carries 99 aspects of disbelief and one aspect of faith, it must be interpreted according to the best of meanings, which is faith'.

Linguistically: It means the utmost degree of humility (khudhu') and submission.

According to the shar'i terminology: any action or saying that is done to obey Allah or please Him, and for it to be correct, it must fulfil two conditions:

[1] Sincerity of intention for Allah alone; and [2] must be done according to the guidelines of the shari'ah (i.e. not a bid'ah).
