Boycotting the Al Maghrib Institute

Recently, it has come to my attention, that one of the instructors of the Al Maghrib Institute has accused the late Shaykh Alawi al-Maliki of propagating blatant shirk.

I have personally engaged in various debates with Abu Ammar whose incogent criticisms of the Ashari aqeedah and tasawwuf is more of a proof of his own ignorance than of any defects in those aspects of ahl us sunnah waal jamaah.

I have called upon Abu Ammar to bring substantive proof of his claim. If he cannot, then he should retract his statements.

If he does not do so, I will immediately begin organizing a boycott of all Al Maghrib events and programs, starting in Maryland.

InshaAllah, if any brothers want to help, we should directly address this issue.

This generation of Muslims needs tasawwuf now more than ever. We cannot survive in the West without the assistance of the 'Ulema and tasawwuf.

If the Muslim youth associate tasawwuf with shirk, this will prevent them from studying a subject that they desperately need.

Where in Maryland are you located brother? Are you in the Baltimore area or DC?

I ask because at my masjid (near DC) Al-Malghrib crew is deep. Sometimes it's to the point where I don't even brother to tell people that I have a madhab. Not that it ever comes up...but that's beside the point. It can be frustrating at times, but I'm not sure boycotting events and things is the right way to go.

I have friends that study Al-Maghrib and they are open to cetain scholars that do not deny the Tasawwuf. A few of them really wanted to go on the Rihla to Madinah that was done this summer with Sh. Hamza and Sh. Muhammad Yaqoubi.

I guess there is a difference between an Institution and it's people. Just keep that in mind when talking about mass boycott campaigns. Sometimes people who are well meaning just cause more fitnah.

As someone who came in to Islam with the "help" of Salafis, honestly one of the best things you can do is provide alternative books, websites, and information for people. For so long it felt like EVERYTHING was published in Saudi Arabia (if you know what I mean). It was a relief to find websites like Sunnipath and MeccaCentric which I LOVE. Many times people listen to someone because they are not given any other alternatives. As someone said in another thread, much of the reason why people follow the Salafi "minhaj" is because they are ignorant. That's why Salafis often recruit non-Muslims or Muslims who are weak in knowledge.

I just think your efforts would be better spent dispelling the myths.

I understand that the best thing to do is through knowledge and education, but the only people truly qualified in responding to Al Maghrib are the 'Ulema and the people won't listen to their responses if they deem them to be polytheists and disbelievers.

No, I taught computers, physical education, health, and occassionally Islamic studies at the school elementary/middle school at Masjid al Rahmah.
