If the job is totally haram (like bartendering or prostitution) then you should definitely return the gift otherwise some of our (Hanafi) `ulama of this age have said regarding the one who is forced due to obligations of family or society to eat at the home of a person who has some haram income aside from his halal income, that he may eat and then give the host a gift of equal worth to the price of the food with the intention of payment. This could perhaps be applied to your situation.
I run into this at times so I just make it a habit to not take anything from people I have doubt about.

There is some leeway on the issue in the Shafi' school who say it is not haram but makruh.
