If the job is totally haram (like bartendering or prostitution) then you should definitely return the gift otherwise some of our (Hanafi) `ulama of this age have said regarding the one who is forced due to obligations of family or society to eat at the home of a person who has some haram income aside from his halal income, that he may eat and then give the host a gift of equal worth to the price of the food with the intention of payment. This could perhaps be applied to your situation.

I run into this at times so I just make it a habit to not take anything from people I have doubt about.

If more than half of his wealth is a halal then it would be permissible to accept such a gift. However, if more than half his wealth is haram then it would not be permissible unless he clearly makes known that the wealth he bought the gift with was halal. (hanafi)

There is some leeway on the issue in the Shafi' school who say it is not haram but makruh.
