Default Starting a New Muslim group in Bradford, any takers?

    Assalaamu a'laykum

I am about to start a new Muslim group in Bradford. Generally converts feel isolated and intimidated - being the ethnic minority - at the local masjid. Also converts have great difficulty in the simple practices which most established Muslims take for granted; having learnt them at the madrassa or at home. So this group will tackle these issues if not a few more insha'Allah. I have worked for Leeds new Muslims (www.leedsnewmuslims.org.uk) and have very close links with Nottingham new Muslims (www.nottsnewmuslims.com)... the aim is to make a national network. Anyway, does anyone have any advise or anyone willing to help?

    Jazakumullah khayr

PS: And definately no unorthodox sects!!! A friend died because of them

    Good idea ;

You mention 'group', will you not be linked to any masajid(s)/ulemah?

My advice would be that you need to address the issue of madhabs and difference of opinion in the very beginning, as many converts feel utterly confused if they are firs taught one way and then someone later comes to them and says, hey thats all wrong what you do... So please remember when teaching to emphasize the point of multiple accepted views. Also make clear on what ulama/view you base your teaching, so the people will know if they later on have to respond to questions etc.

I think though that it would be best to have ulama etc. teaching, but a group for converts in the way of support and perhaps tackling difficult issues is very handy. I would recommend some encouraging material to be read, like stories of sahabah etc. that inspire, but don't confuse.

May Allah make your group a success, amin.

    Assalam-o-Alaikum,

Well i think that the idea is EXCELLENT MASHALLAH!!!
    JazakAllah Khair for recommending that!!!
Yeah, we definitely need to PROMOTE THE true traditional Islam.
InshAllah we will succeed in helping your group.
Well, i think i should be able to help, and i think others should as well from this forum.
Also, i think we should make a list of Sunni sites that can help converts LIKE www.Sunnipath.com www.Sunnah.org www.livingIslam.org www.masud.co.uk etc etc etc. And we can provide a LIST of useful books such as the book translated by Sheikh Nuh which is "Reliance of the traveller", i've heard that its ONE OF THE BEST in helping understand Fiqhs/SUnni Islam and differences of opinion.
Let us know what you think please??

    Take care,
    ALlah Hafiz.

I totally agree... in fact I was one of those converts who was 'utterly confused.' That's the main motivation for the group; help converts to find traditional islam. We are compiling an objectives document for the organisation and the first two are teaching creed according to one of the accepted three schools and basic fiqh according to one of the 4 madhabs... of course in Bradistan this is Hanafi

Our other conditions for a valid new muslim group is close contact to a tradtional scholar (notts new muslims being the flagship affiliated with Sh. Hasan Abu Ja'far Al Hanbali). I also hope to get other committee members upto a certain level of knowledge and practice so they can be role models and don't fall pray to i just converted and i know best syndrome. Many converts try and help, but make matters worse by their own ignorance... we want to end that.

    However, we need HELP.

Brilliant this is exactly what I had in mind. The only trouble is knowing at what level to place it at. Don't want to overburden people, but also I remember how boring it was listening to the same old stuff on hijab again and again. Alhamdulillah for hijab . You've started the ball rolling, but we need to classify them; what are they, are they advanced or beginners etc... please keep it comming

Ulema - absolutely because action without knowledge is insanity. At the moment I have good relations with Sh Sad Al Attas of Abu Zahra Keighley and hope to have good relations with a Syrian and Turkish scholar that are making hijra soon insha'Allah
Mosque - No, don't want to get into the pollitics of it all... especially the stupid Deobandi/Braellwi split.
