    Default ANSWERED: Messengers commiting minor sins?

    Salam,

    I thought the Anbiyaa (as) could not commit makor or minor sins, but then i came across this fatwa by Salih al-Munajjid which says that most of the ulema believe that the messengers can commit minor sins? Is this right?

    I ask because a brother emailed me enquiring of his imam who holds the belief that "zanb" means sin and that this is associated with RasoolAllah (saw) in the ayah "Ma taqaddama min zanbika wa ma ta'khar", whereas he said our belief is that the messengers are kept ""Ma'soom anil zanbe wal khata".

    assalam`alaikum,

    Till you get the opinion from the scholars here is what I know :

    48:2 That Allah may forgive thee thy faults of the past and those to follow; fulfil His favour to thee; and guide thee on the Straight Way;

    The actions of the Habib of Allah alayhi afDalus salaatu was salaam referred to in this ayah are not the same as the faults of the non-Ambiyaa zayd and amr.

    This in the context of the ambiyaa is simply chosing a less virtuous action when there is a possibility of chosing a more virtuous one - which for instance the ambiya may do to lessen the burden off the ummah and to make it easy for them - further it is from the wisdom of Allah to teach humanity from the actions of the ambiyaa.

    and Allah azza-wa-Jall elevates his Habib alayhi afDalus salaatu was salaam's rank above this through this aayah- subhanAllah

    wassalam,

    Salamu Alaikum

    There is an Ijma regarding the fact that all the Prophets are free of Major sins, and the Majority also state that they are free from small sins. This is stated in Qadi Iyad's "al Shifa fi ma`rifat ahwal Al Mustafa."

    However, there is difference about this, such as the sayings of Imam al Haramayn in his Kitab Al Irshad (regarding the possibility of Prophets doing minor sins), Imam Ghazali and even Imam Ashari himself but the majority of scholars that came after them say the Prophets are immune from small sins aswell and this position was stated as the stronger positions by Imam Al Subki.

    "And essential for them is absolute trustworthiness"

    (Jawharat al-Tawhid, verse 59)

    Which according to th eulema necessitates true Immunity from any inappropriate act.
