Default Assistence in learning islamic issues

Im presenting a practical issue n would request the learned members 2 give their view-points, so that those not having knowledge r benefitted.

As we all know we have 4 prominent schools of thought regarding islamic jurisprudence. These schools have assisted the common people 2 undestand the issues, we keep confronting in our daily lives. My question is, if a person wants 2 seek assistence from the scholars of all the schools n later using his own brain, decides 2 act upon anyone out of them, but at a later stage, while facing some other problem, he adopts the view-point of the other school of thought. Is this allowed in our religion?

Why im placing the issue on the forum, cz one of my friend is of the view that we have 2 b associated with only one school of thought n we cannot seek opinions or adopt the view-point held by the others. He further stated that it depends upon the person, as 2 which school of thought, he wants 2 remain associated with, but he cant deviate at a later stage.

I just want 2 ask the learned members, can we seek assistence from all the 4 schools of thought, instead affiliating with one only or is it binding that we have 2 essentially select one out of the four.

This is the practical situation, many muslims remain confused about. Simple n easy answers will b appreciated please.

It is best to choose a primary school that one adheres to on most occassions. For example, I am a Hanafi and thus by default I will follow the Hanafi rulings.

However, it is *not* impermissible to follow the rulings of other schools provided that:

[1] One does not make it a habit to seek out dispensations,
[2] One follows that madhab completely in that action. If one mixes in such a way that it is not independently valid in either one of the schools then it is impermissible.

This is the mu`atamad position in the Hanafi school.

Further, if you do wish to follow another school - contrary to your default school - then make sure that you know with surety the position of the other school you are following correctly, and this is ideally done by asking a reliable an dupright scholar of that other madhab.

If you cannot attain such surety then it will not be permitted.

    Wasalam
May My Soul be sacrificed for your soul, my beloved, my master Muhammad - peace and blessing upon you- !
