    Question Feminism and Islam

    Assalamulaikum

What is the best way to approach the following questions from Sisters:

    1. I have a choice if I want to wear the Hijab or not.
Why do some places (such as in Mecca) force me to wear it?

    2. We do not need to wear the hijab nowadays, that was back then, things have changed now women are no longer at home, it is not necessary in today's society?

    3. What I wear should not define who I am?
If I want to wear the hijab that is upto me?

As a brother, I am always going to approach these questions from a certain perspective. Do Sisters, married Brothers, Brothers with Sisters have any advice on how to approach this issue.

    Jazakallah khair for your help

No one believes Feminism and Islam are polar aparts than me. The reason I titled it that way because the questions are from feminists and I am looking for an islamic perspective. I said that I will always approach it from a certain perspective because I am a male/brother.

she does indeed have choice - either to pay heed to a fard, or not. for a sister to say this, she has probably some slight misunderstandings about islam in general, not just the hijab issue. you may well want to address those first. iman necessitates action.

...well, this is clearly a modernist's approach. again, back to the principles of islam. certain things just don't change with time. hijab, which is wajib in all the madhhabs of islam, will remain wajib until the end of time.

don't discuss hijab with these sisters. this is obviously a secondary issue.

Yes the sister has a choice, whether she cooses to obey Allah and reap the benefits of pleasing him in the hereafter or whether she chooses to be disobey Allah's command for wearing hijab. She needs to address whether she fells the same about such fard as praying. Where is her imaan weak and tackle that first and inshallah hijab comes naturally.

hijab is a sign of modesty and in todays society this is even more so a valuable tool that is required. Hijab is a protection from a mans gaze and thoughts. Hijab is respect and most of all it is a liberation for a women, she doesnt have to show her beauty to every joe on the street. She is a valued pearl, a hidden gem not just todays fashion and over tomorrow.

What you wear or the lack of it in todays society does define a woman unfortunately. Hijab is worn to obey Allah's command and not to define you as a woman.

I just heard a lecture on this. First of all hijab is fard on jews, christians and muslim women. Orthodox jews, nuns and practicing muslim women wear some form of cover. the places that have this mandatory are the countries that are run by shariah law. the law was sent by Allah SWT therefore making it fard. It is not an option but then again it becomes an option when you choose to practice islam or not. that's the only time it's attacked in such a way. A practicing muslimah would never consider it an option because islamic law is not a choice it's LAW. If someone chooses not to follow the law they pay the price for it. Religious law is judged on judgment day therefore it's looked over in this dunya. People kind of take the approach of "out of sight, out of mind" then again it's out of sight because it hasn't happened yet. they will regret it when the time comes. Now hijab is a form of protection because it limits the eyes of others from seeing things that are unlawful to them. A body is sacred and it doesn't belong to us. It's property that is borrowed and will be returned. If we abuse it we will be held accountable. Now making it seen to everyone is a part of abusing it. Now if a women considers that "what I wear defines who I am" well then that says it all. If she sees her body as cheap and permissible for everyone to see it then that's what she is. She has low self esteem and shows her body because of her insecurities of herself. A covered women is confident about her beliefs and considers her body as an honor that must be protected at all times. therefore she obeys her beliefs and the commands sent down to us without thought.

feminism in islam....it doesn't exist because Allah SWT has given us all the rights we need. Did you know that in Muslim Spain back in 1492 there were women going to colleges/universities? did you know that? probably not. who is the most educated muslim woman scholar of all time? it's Aisha RA. So, where is the need for feminsm? there isn't a need because women aren't oppressed in islam. boo'ya feminazis! hate them.

Dont' fight for me when I'm not complaining about my rights that I LOVE! *I'm so anti-femigarbage*

    totally agree..

besides no one has the right to force it on others..i even think the law in Saudi that forces women to wear it against their will is wrong since ive seen with my own two eyes Saudi women who totally took off not only their hijaab but their modest clothes even.
